  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

TATTOO

That was great!

I thought this short film was brilliant on several levels. The technical aspects are wonderful and demonstrates what the Red camera is all about. But I also find the story line to be quite intriguing and cannot wait for the sequel as well as the prequel. Praises go out to Bill Paxton and Daniel Hsia.

The characters that were not specifically listed in the credits were most compelling:
- The tattoo: a red dragon
- The "last person who wore this" and was never heard from again

The sequel, the story of the hero who has just gotten the tattoo, is setup by;
- "legend tells of a day when a descendent will ......."

The prequel, the story of the past hero, is setup by;
- "mythical power that no one had ever seen"
- "but the world ... the world was unprepared"

The fact that this was accomplished in the time frame that it was is absolutely amazing. Congratulations to the TEAM that pulled this off. I would love to see this in 4k.

(re-post on this thread. originally on the compression thread where the movie was first posted.)

I just finished watching it several times,everything is great about it,the dynamic range,the latitude it shows,the colors,but the motion characteristics looks a bit videoish why is that??
was it not shot at 23.976 fps at 1/48 or 180 degree shutter,did you go with a different shutter angle for smoother look and different motion characteristics???
I will be waiting for an answer.................

Excellent. Love the detail and range of exposure captured.

At the 2:29 mark I see two red dots that seem out of place (kinda looks like laser pointers). They are not there in a similar scene a few scenes afterwards. Is that in the original or did my MacBook Pro add something?

Also, lenses used? Pretty please? :blush:

I didn't feel the short had "video-esque" motion at all. If anything, the reason it looked any different to me was simply due to the total lack of noise (that I can tell from this compressed version), the DR (look at the CFL's as "Stranger" is walking up the stairs at the beginning!!! Amazing!!!), and the detail. COMPLETELY blown away here. Epic can truly do whatever you want. Want it to look like film? Plenty of tools to "dumb it down". This short just makes it clear Epic is a film alternative...and then some. Plenty of room to accomplish what you wish. No more "blaming the camera". Cannot wait for my Epic-S. My account will be ready to be drained after this summer.

All I can say: bring it. I'm buckled up and ready to ride.

In regards to aesthetics, the short really reminded me of Jordan Cronenweth's work in Blade Runner. Amazing lighting and sets. Thanks for posting, Jarred. :}

Those red dots are the ember tips of incense burning on the table....

The red dots you were seeing were lit incense.

--I also would like to know technical specs and what lenses were used. Thanks again!

i am not blaming the camera,it's just that there something different about the motion and i don't think lack of noise is the reason,go and see THE SOCIAL NETWORK it doesn't has noise or grain added to it but still looks cinematic and shows the motion characteristics that we see in a movie,but this short which ofcourse perfectly shows the capabilities of the camera looks a but videoish to me only and only in terms of motion characteristics and no other aspects......

everything else about this short is absolutely brilliant and shows how great this camera is.......

Seems a moot point as no one else feels the same(as far as I have seen), I tire of vague descriptions like videoish (what is the definition of videoish?) that fall under the opinion/definition of the viewer. Comments like that feel like uninformed critiques as I have seen from many regarding new cameras when they are trying to be critical about a piece of work and have nothing to say. This may seem harsh but I mean no offense and unless you are doing what I am saying then you should not be offended.

We are all entitled to our opinions and everyone has them and they all stink, like something else, have a good one!

ps. so to point out more clearly, if you actually see a noticeable videoish effect (whatever the definition of that is) then I understand and it may be something that bothers you, but the motion is fine to me and the feel is far from video, so I guess we can agree to disagree but I would like you to notice it kind of looks like you are trolling though I doubt you are.

Images this sharp will need some getting used to ;)

Focus pullers have a lot of pressure on them now D:

Was the shot just before the rack-focus to the woman in the bullet's path a composite? Both the bar owner and the 'red dragon' were in focus, even though you see the DoF ending on the red dragon alone. (this may be where 'videoish' could come from as a wide DoF is, along with 60fps, the demarkation of video)

I thought everything looked brilliant and cinematic. The snow in the beginning was awesome, and the lights in the bar sung.

I'm curious about lens choice at 5:17...Sharp in the front, sharp in the back, but soft (on the gun) midway between?

I'm pretty sure the shot was achieved using a split diopter that allows for two distinct focus points. There's several shots like this in L.A. Confidential, The Untouchables and the TV show "Heroes" used it extensively in the first season.

Here's a frame grab from THe Untouchables:

Yes that is a split diopter... the double blur in the very center ( around the rim of his ear ) gives it away.
