  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Jim Cameron buys...

RED can give out Ms when and to who ever they want. There is no real line. Giving out Ms to top DPs or directors makes a lot of sense for RED and for all of us. These guys will battletest the hell out of em and will create some beautiful pictures at the same time.
...

Hello Tim,

My 2 cents.

- There is a line even in the M's. I doubt Mr Camron or associates have 50 Serial number under 7000...
- The battle test thing is about the Tattoo programm started 6 month ago with Spiderman and others features. We, longtime RED one USER, don't need anymore any beta tester for the Epic...
- M's where made because of housing manufacturing problems that as of today should allready have been sorted out, the Japan thing did not have any influence between M's and X's
- 50 epics also means 250 SSD 256, 50 Bomb EVF... this won't help supplain chain.

If Camron shoots with bought Epics before we (low numbers) recieve ours... RED, as a company, has a customer treatement problem.

Patrick

Still hoping to shoot on Epic-X 336 mid June. Also looking for alternatives (F3, 5D, AF-101...)

From the beginning of the EPIC-M program, it has always been a separate "line" from the EPIC X. They did say they will pick and choose who gets the M's and when they get the M's. My guess is the only ones who got their M cameras in the same order as the ONE was OffHollywood and Steve Gibby.

So, Jim , this means nobody else will get Epic-m's anymore?
I thought you would continue making them as long as you saw any benefits in it, before x is released on larger scale?

at least this would have made some people happy who are more independant shooters and are really waiting and wanting to get one.

Don't listen to them, Sven Seynaeve. You'll get your Epic if you ordered first. Jim doesn't need to give special treatment to anyone. He's already plugged in.

I'm #68 and I think that this is fantastic news. Well done Jim and the RED team.
I always wondered why Camron wasn't shooting RED before and thought he had a contact with Sony or Arri and this news shows he will see for himself why RED make great camera's.

I have a lot of respect for my peers as they have earned it so them getting EPIC's before me is a no brainer.
I can't wait to see what they make with them which will inspire me to making my own.

I have to get back to writing that script :-)

Guys,

For those who are complaining, let's not be narrow-minded ... I know it's hard to wait, but do you honestly not see how -- as a future/imminent Red Epic owner -- James Cameron buying 50 does not massive increase the perceived value of your camera? Both for jobs and rentals.

Yes, of course, getting hired is ultimately about YOU as a shooter/cinematographer ... I'm not saying the camera is everything. But all things being equal ... having better, more "hot" or "sought-after" gear influences how much you can charge, whether you get selected for work, etc. Yes, perhaps it's a bit superficial but it's true. I remember running an ad looking for someone to help us shoot a pre-party at the Oscars last year ... I got over 100 responses in 3 days, and EVERYONE (100%) bragged about the gear they would be using on the job, even though most of it wasn't that impressive by Red's standards.

Let's not kid ourselves. It matters. Combined with a great reel and expertise, you having the exact same camera that Peter Jackson and Cameron are using to shoot their multi-hundred million dollar features with is a GOOD thing. Huge victory by Jim and the team, and we get to reap the benefits.

Besides Red has ALWAYS publicly maintained that Epic-M production has NOTHING to do with X production ...

And for anyone in line for an M -- do you honestly think this was an overnight deal? A rash decision to buy $3 million in cameras that will likely be used to shoot a $300 million+ movie? Nope, it has likely been in discussions and on the radar for quite a while.

So let's stop acting like James Cameron just rudely jumped in front of a whole bunch of people.

This is a 1,000% good thing for all of us as Redusers -- let's just enjoy it in peace :)

Anthony

Frankly? Do you really think that Camron is the argument to convince a director to shoot with Epic?

The project needs is the starting point! Choosing the right tool for the specific job is also our job as dp and director.

The RED one is not the right tool for my specific job, but Epic is (F3 if Epic still not available).

so for you its Either Epic or F3? No RED-mx or Alexa right?

Well, Peter Jackson does, especially for big scenes. Plus, as you mentioned, there is second (and often third) unit, as well as required backup bodies (any camera can have problems, usually at the least opportune time). As for Jim Cameron, not all of these bodies would likely be for his own particular needs. Jim is involved with both his brother and Vince Pace in a manufacturing company that develops and ultimately will market 3D rigs as well as other accessories. He also produces projects other than the pictures he directs, and the partnership with Vince is also involved in live 3D production (think concerts and sports events), much like 3ality. These type of productions require a LOT of camera bodies. Think of anything he's buying as a "studio" purchase rather than a purchase for a specific production and it will make a lot more sense.

OK, that makes sense, didn't realize that they had more than one production entity.

... I need something small, S35mm. Mainly shooting in slums. 5D comes in mind also but won't be good enough for the wide shots...

I'll be testing other cameras but Alexa is out, mainly because of size & weight.

Pat

Epic would be the perfect camera for this project...

i shot last year 50 days with the SI-2k...nice pictures and now with solid firmware.but you need a back pack and its only like "s16mm" at 2k.

This only confirms what RED has said all along- which is that RED only allows people to realize their vision and to future-proof their work. It's not a magic bullet for making great stories with great performances and great direction. James Cameron, as we know, has been testing several cameras recently and even made a deal with Alexa to support a new Alexa M powered Pace-Fusion rig. This purchase of EPIC-Ms only goes to show that James Cameron feels RED is at least comparable to Alexa which I know everyone here agrees on. And as its been said. They have a lot of ventures, not just AVATAR... so let's wait and see.

Congrats to everyone! I can't wait to see how they are utilized.

Ok Ketch and Lorenzo,

then I misunderstood the post quiet a bit.

Just want to encourage Jim to do the best he can in a possible timeframe. I surely understand the situation.

I'm sure this is a big deal for all of us that these giant pictures get shot on Epic, I would'nt like to have seen it otherwise.
Not saying there are no other systems around, but Epic is the closest to my expectations on how it should be build.

So I'll try to be patient and keep my thumbs up for the Red team.

Just hope they will indeed continue the M line until production line is fully setup. with accesories and titanium mount, it's certainly the best deal around for long time.

It would have been interesting if this related to the former rumours of Helgeland/Rudin's Cleopatra but as its now a former rumour (passed on to Fincher) guess thats not the case. Would have been interesting to see him being brought on board a project for a change. Might have got a good, reasonable length film out of him. Sure he will do some amazingly interesting visual work with them though.

Anthony is right on the money.

The fact that someone like James Cameron will shoot with Epic will hold a lot of weight with Ad Agency type people (as one example). They're notorious, in my experience, for insisting on technology simply because Mr XYZ uses it. This bodes well for any Epic owner as you will be able to charge more, particularly in the short term. I see it all the time.
