  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Tom Lowe...

Tom,
just out of curiosity, have you run a side-by-side test comparing 65mm, Imax and Epic?

Several years ago, Jarred posted that IMAX is roughly around 31K resolution, so I think Monstro would be more in line with replacing IMAX than Epic. Although, ironically, IMAX digital (so-called "Lie-Max") is only 2K.

No, but I would be interested in participating in such a test. I know that Ron Fricke has access to 65mm 5-perf camera and James Neihouse has 15-perf IMAX cameras. Maybe it could happen...

I think film would still win on DR (leaving aside HDRx), but on resolution and how "clean" the image is, I bet the Epic will impress, especially with the new Leica primes on it.

me too :)
Not that easy to get my hands on an Epic-M, 65mm or Imax camera here in Rome....yet

Yeah, from the little I've seen, those lenses look pretty awesome...I personally know at least two pretty "big" cinematographers here in Italy who can't wait to try them on 35mm, and I'm sure there are many, many more...

Alright, we are back in action!! After a several-week separation from my Epic (due to my own fault, not Red's), I am finally back in action! It's so great having the Epic back.

Heading out in the morning for Death Valley for a week. Let the fun begin!

BTW, I am really liking this Wooden Camera top plate. It slides up and down the rails. I'm essentially using it as balance weight, so I don't need the dovetail. :) I have some shorter carbon rails on order.

Ohhh hahaha. Yes. I saw the XLR box and I remember the avatar/logo. :)
Thanks for all those large pictures Schorman.

The little plate one looks like a great idea directly onto the camera for ultra-light setups. And the big one looks slick.

I gotta say, maybe it is just me, but the font and company name feel like a throw back to analogue audio days for some reason. It feels like a nice mix of style with an Epic, and I like it. :)
Gotta be using a couple of Woody lights and RS1i Grados too.

Just wondering, Tom. Have you seen Brook Willards/Viewfactor top-plate?

I notice that there seems to be a longer version of the Easy Plate with many holes (pictured with some easy plates scrwed on to it on the picasa gallery) Is this piece available or on pre-order?

talking about this extended plate: https://picasaweb.google.com/108594...ssories02?feat=directlink#5590307478521060498

The top mount and large plate are being redesigned currently to be easier to use and lighter in weight. When they are done we will post them for sale. Tom and several others have been kind enough to test them in their current state.

Was that the Salton Sea incident? Is the EPIC too heavy for an RC helicopter?

I was actually doing some "underwater saltwater testing" for Red. *cough cough* :sifone:

Yes, for those who do not know, my Epic #188 took a little plunge into the Salton Sea a few weeks ago, when an RC helicopter lost power and fell into the lake. Insurance came through and Jim, Jarred and Brent have been super supportive. I will make a thread about the whole thing soon. I don't have video of the actual crash, but I have video of the moments leading up to it, etc.

Oh man... I don't want to imagine how you felt watching your baby plummet into that corrosive mess. :/ Glad everyone is safe now.

Wonder how much damage the camera took. What lens did you have mounted?

Was it a total loss of the body? I'd hope it was just a repair bill.

And I'm very curious what this does to your insurance rates. I've heard that actually using gear insurance will really jack you in the future. Is this true?

awesome, thanks for the fast reply. I look forward to getting a longer plate with some 15mm rails and a A-Box for the Scarlet

We had the Epic out at Badwater last night. Don't ask about the slider... we were super, super rushed on the setup. We got this set up literally 20 seconds before the best light of the evening. Somehow, the shot worked out great! The sky was a subtle, pastel orange and pink, mixed with white clouds, which blended nicely against the white, salty ground as the camera flew over it. My hope was to move the camera in a "Z-axis" move, meaning as straight forward as possible. Lens was 16mm, so I had the camera off to the side of the slider a bit, and the slider itself just slightly caddy-corner. I call this a quasi-Z-Axis move.
