As only real men can appreciate the physicality and endurance required to win the greatest trophy on the planet...I say let the trash talking begin!

I will start off by stating the obvious: Jarred's team is once again not in the post season, but for the 2nd year in a row they have the 1st overall draft pick.

While I have been a Red Wings fan since they drafted Stevie Y, my allegiance is somewhat torn over the fact he's now GM in Tampa.

Its the only time of year that I pay for ESPN online. We don't get hockey in the UK on any channels apart from SKY, which I don't have.

Whats Jarred's team out of interest?

Oh ... they finally done with the preliminaries and we can actually start the real hockey season!

Cool, now I'll actually watch.

I always enjoy watching the games, but I've never been a fan, just a player.

As a former player, I can concur with the "real men" part. No athlete takes the beating that an NHL player does night in night out. Only NHL players have to play that sort of grueling schedule. And then they are faced with periodic bursts of anaerobic activity in the midsts of aerobic exhaustion.

Lord Stanley's Cup is the hardest trophy in sports to win. Harder than an Olympic gold medal, harder than the heavyweight championship of the world - the hardest.

I should add though, being a rugby player for most of my life...it's not a walk in the park either. But I do like my hockey. Never been a football fan (soccer) but in the UK you're usually either one or the other. Not sure what it's like over there.

Can't wait for Bruins-Canadiens. I think this one is going to be a war. The Habs never like us, but it's amped up this year because of a hard hit by Chara. By the way according to this about.com:

Question: Why are the Montreal Canadiens called the Habs?

Answer: Habs is an abbreviation of "les habitants," the informal name given to the original settlers of New France, dating back to the 17th Century. So it's a natural fit for the The Montreal Canadiens, established in 1909 and marketed as a French-Canadian hockey team.

Having said that, the nickname might have been the result of an error. According to NHL.com, the first man to refer to the team as "the Habs" was Tex Rickard, owner of Madison Square Garden, in 1924. Rickard apparently told a reporter that the "H" on the Canadiens' sweaters was for "Habitants." Not true. The distinctive C-wrapped-around-H logo stands for "Club de Hockey Canadien."

Jarred is originally from Edmonton...home of the Oilers, and the reason why the Jets never made it out of the 2nd round. Damn that 99!

Three teams from California in the playoffs, one a recent winner of the cup, and all you hear about is baseball. They can enjoy their sport but thank you hockey fans!

I'm a little concerned about the starting goalie for the Flyers, Sergei Bobrovsky not playing good at all. We bring back Leighton just to bench the last two games of the season as bobrovsky lets in soft goals and gets pulled against the Islanders? He's got talent, but is not ready for playoffs.

Wings are in good shape without Zetterberg...I hope they let him come back healthy instead of rushing him back. Fingers crossed for a long run.

I think the Rangers are done -unless Lundqvist can steal a few.

Up in Canada we literally have at least one game a night for the next 3 weeks solid...it's sick! We had two games last night (east feed was Detroit-Phoenix, then west with Vancouver-Chicago) and another two tonight I believe. Habs vs. Bruins should be violent.

You are all wrong. Terribly, horrendously wrong.

The playoffs get canceled by the NHL if the Wild doesn't make it. They just don't happen. Poof! Gone.

I hope you all lose. :ciappa:
