My big disappointment so far, with this year's NAB coverage, has nothing to do with RED or its announcements.

What bums me out is the end of this community as we have known it.

This year marks the worst coverage ever of NAB events by its own community. The forum has been very thin on content from NAB. This was the first year, in many years, which I could not make it to NAB for the opening of the show floor, and I was really counting on redusers to keep me informed. As I have done my best to share new discoveries with my own online communities, reduser included, in years past...

Everyone is so fixated on their own tweety pages, it seems, that reduser has starved for information. Not just about RED products but about all the cool peripherals and third-party innovations as well.

We used to have a phalanx of folks, ready to report everything RED-related here, with pics and all. Now we primarily have links to individual Twitter pages, which are frustratingly thin on content -

I'm thinking Twitter is the death of value-added user-based content. It destroys the community which can be built on forums. The format forecloses on in-depth analysis or discussions. We are trading in discussion and reflection for followers. This appears to be the future trend of user-based content. I don't like what I see.

Die, Twitter, die!

I only tweet all my news becuase my mac kicked the bucket just before the show. And typing long threads on my iphone is still my weakness.

Being able to write small blips and easily attach pictures, is wicked helpful for me.

Couldn't agree more Meryem. I'm sick and tired of the bloggers, tweeters, podcasters and all the other copy and paste internet junkies who are more interested in pushing their own name than contributing anything meaningful to the Industry.

And why is it that video content solely designed for the consumption of industry professionals has to be so poorly produced? Some of it is depressingly bad. Embarrassingly bad. Bad...

Rant over:)

While I would agree to some extent we have to remember that it has only been one day into NAB and I'm sure some of the fine folks here like Finner, Tobias, etc. will post good quality videos about all the new stuff in due time.
I do find it a bit perplexing that no one from Red has logged on to give us junkies our shot of info and that we are left at guessing what this Tattoo film is about, what Red Dragon really means, etc. The only post we got was a somewhat dismayed one from Jim himself (can't say I blame him).
NAB is always a strange time anyway with companies being forced to create some kind of hype even though it doesn't necessarily correspond to their own timeline. Perhaps if Red could have anticipated the delays they would have done their own thing like last year? Anyway my point is that we shouldn't blow this out of proportion. We also got a lot of good info here on reduser recently thanks to community members like Ketch, Gibby, Mike Seymour and other M-owners who have been willing to share their time. Ketch has been awesome from that point of view. Let's just have someone from Red give us some kind of summary of what's been going on in Vegas sometime this week and all be happy.
:cheers2:

I was suppose to go. not sure how I feel about attending this year...

I agree in part. Although I will say maybe the issue is there was a variety of different avenues the info was coming in on. As someone who invariably never manages to get there it seems pretty much the same. It was day one and things tend to trickle in (usually when people get back to their hotels later on. I really enjoyed the demonstration that Matt did going through the different accessories. That is something that can only really be done via video or by actually being there. I feel like I have a good basic understanding of the versatility of the systems and how they interconnect. Because of the amazing way they have been designed simple images will not do. So thanks to REDMODz (Justin Tonaci et al) for that. Was Awesome. Matt also mentioned in the same video about the upgrade with RDrag. Then obviously Justin had scouted and found out that Ted was making an announcement (about the Projector and RDrag) So from when the doors opened a half hour ustream told me all the announcements from RED.

I then saw the Post interview which was great as always to see Ted doing his thing. I got nothing from Twitter that I didn't know about from the first half an hour of the show (except the Leica bundle deal).

Was kind of cool just to see peoples initial comments and feelings about NAB. The kind of thing that would create just noise on a forum.

I am sure that in the coming few days there will be conversations about everything. So I am happy to have a multitude of platforms to gain different types of information from.

When communication becomes so cheap, information content has less value it seems.

Apple always make it exciting, at least until reality hits that it's just the next obvious step heh,

I don't know, I like twitter, I've started to get use to it alot and it's where I saw the confirmation obviously from Offhollywood and the iPad App talk before it came on the stream, I think the problem is more the sources then anything, if people were tweeting the event and taking proper pictures etc. it would probably help alot knowing whose a good source to follow that would be consistant,
like Redmodz.com, tonaci and team have been awesome at throwing out some awesome clips and stuff,

think on the RED side it's rather more fear of speaking out and getting hit with more unforeseen delays, REDs ready to go with shipping if they had the parts at hand but obviously things happened and took a turn for the worst in other parts of the world that have caused that to slow down, few people seem to be tired of hearing stuff that's still a year off rather then right before shipping starts so RED are covering themselves now, especially since their greatest and latest is pretty much got a foot on the ground,

I have to agree though, apart from redmodz.com and the ustream, I'm really lacking on the "woohoo" factor, I think i get more of a "woohoo" from an Apple announcement then the entire NAB it seems, given Engadget and twitter did manage to point out the new blackmagic gear and G-Tech upcoming Thunderbolt gear...so not all that bad...
Problem is, I want to hear pricing and shipping dates, I'm looking forward to hearing the lecia pricing (even though I can't afford the lenses to begin with heh)

Guys, you have to understand, it's very difficult to both look at things at NAB and report on them. Running to the free wi-fi areas takes away time to actually see anything. I thought I'd be able to pull off some fast-paced coverage this year but my phone has been uncooperative with 3G performance, should have upgraded to an iPhone before the show but alas.

So far, it's actually "same-old, same-old" with a lot of products. Nothing really new per se, mostly just being able to see things announced on the internet over the past few months in person. RED's tent is like this in a way, seeing Epic footage isn't that big a deal, it's just more beautiful bean footage at this point, which is nice to see at any time. Immediate thumbs up.

I'm not sure how I'll do the FCPUG meeting tonight, I'll most likely post my thoughts and observations at a later point, a lot of other bloggers and media people will post the main details faster than I could.

I am taking pics and covering some oft unseen products and vendors so feel free to check out my Facebook page a little later on to see something you may not normally see, who knows, there may be a really cool find for your projects.
