Its impossible to sleep in times like this! Im very exited that you have been out shooting on the scarlet.
Hopfully you can post footage soon. Today would be a good day for new scarlet info!

While in San Francisco during our Epic American Tour,
hosted by Nathan Garofalos, we were surprised by news of a visit of John Restivo bringing with him, nothing less then Ted's Scarlet... ;)

I WAS BLOWN AWAY BY SCARLET!!

In fact I like it so much that I told Jarred I felt a bit guilty that I like it so much more then I expected, and that now our beloved Epic M will have to share time with Scarlet!

Nathan, Joseph and I shot with Scarlet for the all day, very exited and in disbelieve that we were actually shooting SCARLET!!

The camera felt incredibly well in my hands, super light and super well balanced, while on the Heli flying over San Francisco, I hand held the camera for most of the trip with no fatigue,
having to hold it far form the body to make my self a Human Gyro, when Nathan, that was shooting Epic hung off the side door, and I switch and I give him the Scarlet and I tucked the
Epic to continue shooting I was in for a surprise to see how light Scarlet really was, to the defense of Epic we had one of our Master Primes mounted on, he he.

The controls of the menu and everything else were an easy switch form Epic, however the integrated Zoom lens and the single ring design for control of iris,
Zoom and focus was an insane pleasure to work with, very responsive and truly an other RED WONDER!!

The Epic with Master Prime set at T*22 needed still some stopping down while flying over the San Francisco Golden Gate,
while the Scarlet thanks to the filters give a much nicer control, love that feature, well, actually love all features, especially some insane specs!!

So much to write, just simply stunned by the Body form and functionality of this little piece of wonder!! Very well worth the WAIT!!!

Joseph and Nathan wil express their own opinions, which I am sure they are also in WOW of this truly fantastic camera.

THANK YOU RED FOR THIS LITTLE HUGE SURPRISE!!!

That is so awesome to hear! Ketch, I'm curious because I'm not sure if it's been answered before but is there image stabilization built into the Scarlet and if so how did it perform with the Heli shots?

That's one of those thing which is easy to forget is there on Scarlet 8x. I soooo look forward to that.

Can you show where RED team have said no stabilisation? Link?

I guess that's what I meant above. They've been mum about it. The Interwebs show they have one or more patents, pending or granted, regarding optical image stabilization. Jim has been very clear that he would not be playing an open hand any more. I'd love to have OIS, high resolutions, highly mobile camera's crave it in my opinion.

Regardless, I'm sure Scarlet 8x will have some surprises - secret feature #21 is still unknown, AFAIK.

Can we stick to RED info only.... your post made it sound like you were certain there is no stabilisation. Whether there is or not... let's back up statements with RED facts... and links to said facts.

Everything in life changes, Kris, but I've been watching pretty closely and image stabilization has never been mentioned as a feature of the Scarlet 8x.

It seems a bit surprising for it not to be there, since I think every competing camera has it, but as you know RED always does things a bit differently from the competition.

Considering RED's raw orientation, I wonder if they would be more keen on a post-processing-based image stabilization instead of the in-camera sort. Just a thought ...

Not talkingabout something isn’t the same as not having the thing you aren’t talking about. We are so close to NAB now it seems a little silly to derail the thread on off topic speculation on whether or not Scarlet has any particular feature, though I think the question stands as fair....

Thanks Ketch for your report…

Looking forward to the other reports from the hands on!

First off, thank you Jarred, Jimand RED for sending a Scarlet up to SF with John, this camera is great! Ketch and Joseph, this shoot was pretty awesome, I can't wait to work with you guys again:-) The ergonomics are just like epic, except much lighter and slightly smaller. UI is easy, its awesome being able to switch between focus, iris and zoom on the fly. I am really impressed by how beautifully the lens flared, and didn't breath. The motor control for fiz is very smooth, and aside from looking nice on screen, the gearing in camera felt nice in your hand as you would expect.

This is only the second shoot this year I have done in 2D, that being said I can't wait to get a pair of Scarlets for S3D... Scarlet will be a work horse for those in stereo.

EVERYONE needs this camera. Nice work RED team, see you on the floor today.

Hey Nathan,

was an absolute pleasure working with you as well buddy, and look forward to do this again!!!

Say hi to beautiful Jenna.

Not exactly.

Its a 90Wh V-Dock battery. I can't remember the brand. The problem is that the Red Bricks are 140Wh and you can't fly with that as carry on. So Ketch and Joseph chose smaller capacity batteries for the Epic Tour.

Until RedVolt shows up these are a great deal. This setup is very lightweight feeling with an Epic and RPZ 17-50. A 90Wh brick runs an Epic +LCD + RedMote for about 1.5 hours.

Not true. You can carry on two REDBRICK 140 batteries (you can't check them) and with Scarlet each of those will last a LOONG tinme...

I bet those two RDBRICKs can give you power and back-up power for a full-length regulation game.

I wonder how long REDVOLTs last. I would guess if you wanna shoot on VOLTs all day you might be safe with 4 and 2 chargers. Charging two at once all the time. It would be more than enough for 24/7 operation, even three would work that way. Though extra batteries would be nice for things where power isn't available easily.

We should ask on M threads. Didn't they just deliver some REDVOLTs?

According to TSA, you can carry up to 3 batteries between 100 and 300Wh, but they are considered "larger" batteries. You may carry one on the device and two spares.

So ... do you trust that to be accurate? By accurate I mean to say do you trust that to be the exact standard the TSA agent at your airport will actually use and understand?

Also ... is that standard applicable internationally? Air Canada for example only allows 2 larger batteries, and only with approval of their flight agent. Yes, that means that a battery that you could otherwise transport legally can be denied for transport by the airline. The maximum capacity they permit in any case is 160Wh. British Airways has similar rules.

When you wrote your article I tried to research Alitalia's restrictions on their web site, but couldn't find details on batteries. The real point is that depending on your airline and destination, the rules change.

Its better, if practical, to carry only "smaller" batteries, which is everything under 100Wh. Epic makes that practical.

HA, now I see Ketch's response. I may be right generally, but it's not their thinking. Sorry about that.

I hope my homework has been more useful than I thought it was, because the rules are getting silly. 100Wh rated batteries may require "permission" or "approval" from your carrier, and check the rules at your destination when traveling internationally.
