All shot using the Canon EF50mm f/1.2L USM lens. The first is a still from my Red One MX, the other two are from my Canon 5D MkII.

The actor is veteran Japanese movie star Hiroyuki Watanabe. He's highly talented and fluent in English, not to mention a great guy and very classy! It was a pleasure working with him again (I worked with him on a feature film here last year). If you need a Japanese George Clooney and/or James Bond type, Hiro's your man!

Enjoy!

Paul

...and something totally different! The first ume blossoms of the year here in Japan:

I love the painterly quality of this image with the out-of-focus parts. Shot on the Canon 5D MkII with EF50mm f/1.2L USM lens wide open. EXIF information in the image as usual.

Cheers from Tokyo!

Paul :)

Fantastic work as usual Paul. I really like the first frame (the one shot on Red).
Thanks Brad! The Red image was properly lit for the motion shoot; the two Canon stills are just shot under practical lights.

Cheers for the feedback!

Paul :)

it's a pleasure and honor to be in the company of so many incredible photographers/cinematographers.

i shot this in downtown los angeles off of broadway. put the camera at my waste, took and deep breath and snapped this shot. no post rotation correction, however i did adjust the exposure, brought out his face and hands and put a vignette to add more depth. probably one of my favorites to date. thanks everyone for providing fantastic inspiration. REDusers RULE!

Shot with a pre-AI 28mm f2 nikkor wide open (I think?). Good lens!

VERY NICE!

Through some very old glass 1880.

Hello Peter. Can you share some more info. about the 'glass' your shooting through in this post? Almost looks like you placed an old 19th century window pane in front of your lens.

I'm currently machining a Voighlander + Sohn daguerreotype lens adapter with a PL mount.

Hi Joe,

You hit the nail on the head. Old window pane in front of a 70-200 canon lens. I guess the description was a bit cryptic.

I'd love to see a still or two pulled from your daguerreotype lens. I admire your work considerably.

Best, Peter

Paul:

Beautiful B&W! Your work is great. BTW, is Hiro Ken's brother? There looks to be a facial resemblance, and they are both actors...
No relation I believe. Thanks for the comments!

Cheers,

Paul

Thanks Peter! I had a feeling that's what you're doing there-- I had my fingers crossed that you retrofitted an old lens to your Red. I've been experimenting with old lens technology for several years now and have found you can get some amazing results that you'd never get with plugin filters the replicate the look.
