GearNex brings affordable gear head for the RED

HOW MUCH: Pre-order price, $3,995. Normally $5,995.

GearNex LINK direct>>>

Nice discovery

looks good but I'm kinda sick of this whole pre-order thing. Especially with what happened with viewfactor and Birger...

Six to eight weeks expected delivery time. Let's hope those are not Birger weeks...

Would always like to try a head before buying. And can someone let me know why all gear heads have counter-intuitive wheels? Took me two days of training just getting the whack of it. Maybe it is there to confuse directors and getting them to be impressed by directors? Anyway, I'm rambling...

Interesting ProVideo Coalition article. Never used a geared head. The article talks about a geared head being better for shorter focal lengths and a fluid head better for longer ones. Anyone care to explain why?

Smoother slow movements with a gear head. I'm guessing they're referring to slow pans on wide shots. Using a longer lens doesn't necessarily reveal the uneveness a fluid head can bring. If for example the camera is moving through 180 degrees it's not easy to position the body, arm and hand to do it smoothly on a fluid head and maintain a perfect speed throughout. With a gear head it's simply a matter of rotating the crank wheel at a steady pace. A long lens on a gear head might be difficult to keep something fast moving in shot because your having to spin the wheels back and forth really quickly to keep track of it, where as a fluid head is far more natural at following something further away in a smaller FoV (Imagine chasing a bird in the sky with a fluid head compared to a gear head using a 300mm lens - obviously this is quite an extreme example but an actor moving irratically about a set can generate similar problems). Of course a good op can get good results with a fluid head even on wide lenses which is why gear heads aren't as common, that and the fact that fluid heads are point and shoot, quicker to setup shots and generally lighter.

To be honest I'm suprised there isn't a combination head that allows for both fluid control and gear control at the flick of a switch (At least I don't know of one) - Would be very cool and a great way for a startup company to break into the market with a new feature. I dare say there are issues doing such but that's the beauty of coming up with new concepts.

It's all about a "smooth operator" :) or to get a smoother camera movement in motion picture...

Wide lens needs very smooth and slow movement and for longer lens a smooth movement of fluid head is quite enough...

I'd guess the last thing most operators would want would be a combined head which was even bigger, heavier and more expensive than either type. But if you were able to make one of comparable function, bulk, weight and cost I'm sure you'd sell bucket loads! :sifone:

Looks nice, like a mini Mini-Worrall. Hope he adds mounts for a frontbox and an eyepiece leveler.

Folks,

Its the real deal.

Developers Joe Mendoza and Bret Allen are old friends and they brought a fully-functioning pre-release unit to the shop a few weeks ago and showed it to us. I can also confirm that the same unit is being used this week on a 3D RED shoot.

Its very smooth and fluid--a brilliant piece of equipment. They already are creating production units to show at NAB. I hear that they will have a unit on hand at the AJA booth among other places as well.

BUT, if you really want to see one up close, we'll have one at our booth at the REDUser NAB event next Wednesday.

:-)

The unit will also go on sale later today at the Silverado site at pre-release pricing. I'll post more details and a link later when the link is live.

Their website says there is provision for both those things.

Anyone know if it's cable, belt or chain drive? I want to try one. Kind of a bummer it's only 2 speeds. Any word on reduction gears?

Nick

Not to deny that this product exists (it obviously does), but is that original image you posted a photoshop mockup? The holes, screws, and the red "Gearnex" plate look a little off.

Does anyone else see an issue with the tilt wheel being so close to the back of the camera? At +32deg it looks like a camera with a longer lens (and therefore slid back father for balance) will hit the wheel.

I am all set to purchase now, until I thought of this. The Worrall heads have the wheels set lower so this isnt an issue.

With the new materials and designs of no stretch and zero or minimal backlash type belts available, I would think they would be using belts.
Do the Arri heads have more than two speeds?
Never mind I looked it up. The Arri gear head has three speeds.

Under the purchase tab you will find both items listed as accessories coming soon, we are planning on having them ready by mid June.

Actually, the different size optional hand wheels can compensate for speeds and don't require a gear reduction. We have also designed it for left and right handed users, it ships standard right handed.

Also, after R&D we choose to keep it with gears rather then belts for price and longevity.

Thank you for bringing this issue up, we have already addressed it by creating an extension shaft for the handwheel for just those type of applications.

It would be great if you had a set of reduction gears. I'm sure the head is smooth, and different size hand wheels help, but when your on an 800mm lens, reduction gears are really great ;-)

Nice looking head, anywhere on the east coast to check one out?

Thanks,

Nick
