So I was jonesing the other week to get my hands on the EPIC and thought I would pay Mark Pederson and the OffHollywood family a little visit and then follow up with a Leica Demo at BandPro. What a week. :coolgleamA:
Lots of info is starting to surface about EPICs and I wanted to add that no matter what hype you hear...it will never live up to how incredible it is to hold all that juice in the palm of your hand. Navigating menus is completely intuitive and dreamy, I jumped right in and felt at home. Lots of little easter eggs, for example I noticed you can even pinch the screen (iphone style) for a 2x focus assist! The Redmote is slick, small, light, and the connection is rock solid...rest assure the connection of modulars is very secure. As a R1 owner and operator it was a surreal experience and simply blows my mind how they achieved this technical feat...Bravo Jim and RED team.
Next stop was Bandpro and I will keep this short but the Leica glass demo was impressive to say the least and I personally consider the Summilux-C line to be some of the finest cinema glass ever made. The size, speed, craftsmanship... superlative...these lenses are a work of art right down to the silky matte finish. Elements are built in stages (read modular) design that allows rental houses to replace front element with ease and without breaking the bank. The front element from what I understand is the least working element and will cost about 1k to replace...dont quote me on that. As a long time Leica shooter, the possibility of shooting my 1st feature with Leica glass on an RED EPIC camera is a dream come true. (please post pic of that combo Mark!)
I am planning an EPIC-M shoot and promise to share my experience along the way. Thanks Jim Hegadorn and Seth Emmons of Bandpro for coming out and thanks Mark and gang for helping me get my fix. :cheers2:
