  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Best SILENT Camera slider for sound shooting with RED

A lot of linear ball bearings can be directly replaced with acteal, teflon and other plastics that make no noise and in fact are capable of greater loads.

I've used a camtram since they first came out and it's a great piece of equipment. I found that, after much trial and error, that the best track for it is a fiberglass ladder. I bought an 8-16 foor extension ladder from home depot and separated the two pieces giving me a very lightweight and sturdy piece of track. Add a pair of adjustable sawhorses (craftsman, I think) and you can be up and running in about 5 minutes.

These days I mostly use my custom built slider.

Shane, I really like the looks of that slider. Where did you get your track and slider bearings? They do not look like Igus. I recognize the Mitchell cheeseplate from Filmtools

Just bought a Dana Dolly and it is flawless. I really like the whole setup. I got the "Rental Kit" and it's a great deal. Can't recommend enough.

There was a long thread on sliders about a year ago. Far more comprehensive than what is in this thread so far. If interested, you might want to spend some time (unfortunately) trying to find it in Reduser. It will be worth your while.

Cineslider works great. No problems. Kesslercrane.com

Shutle Pod is very high-end lovely product, but you need to also get the keeper wheels for Red or too top=heavy. With keeper wheels you have something pretty amazing.

Can also vouch for Kessler family who stand behind every sale 150%

I agree with the comment on teflon.*The linear bearings with coated teflon surfaces are noiseless. Look at industrial supply houses like Grainger Supply to find them.

On slider choices:
I've heard awesome things about the cineslider from Kessler but have never used one. As far as the Dana dolly, I've used a similar design and find it is extremely good for heavy loads, which is something a lot of traditional sliders can't handle.

I've just purchased the dana dolly for a commercial tomorrow with Reebok and Kelly Brook. I'll post a short review upon wrap.

Looks like a fantastic little rig.

Looking forward to the review. I'd love to see the commercial too! I love kelly brook.

Here is a good source for bearings, gears and such if you like to fabricate your own dodads.
If you are looking for something for a particular project I have a rather large library of catalogs. Many mechanical and optical devices can be built form stock parts. Let me know if I can help. Lord knows I got a lot of free time now adays. lol

That site looks great. Thanks for the link!

The Dana Dolly worked incredibly well and packs down tight. I travelled with 2 cameras, 8' and 5' aluminum pipe (track) 2 x lowboy combos from MSE and audio with my assistant in a mini cooper.

Because the Dolly works on the ground and stands one person can capture great imagery solo. If two people are available then it makes the Dana a snap. I would recommend using at least a 100mm head. The Dana has a remarkably strong base and glides effortlessly. I could carry the entire setup (minus the track) in a medium sized pelican - they also sell a laser cut case on the site or ata flight case if you prefer.

We shot for the first half of the day on Santa Monica beach and the lowboy combos made setup and leveling ridiculously fast. We could reposition and level the dolly in less than 30 seconds.

A very nice piece of kit for the money. Big thanks to Mike for getting me the dolly so quickly and walking me through the purchase of dolly track at my local metal fabricator. (track ran me 108$ for 2 x 8' and 2 x 5', section 40 1.25" aluminum pipe)

Pipe is different then Tube when you go to ask - pipe is measured across the inner diameter (ID) and tube is measured across the outer diameter (OD).

Mike will be at NAB - go clean him out!:thumbup1:

How about using industrial sliders.., Panther seem to used those in some products.
www.igus.de made in germany (site is also in English)
They make them in many sizes durability and load capacity, normaly used in CNC machines and robotic applications.

In the picture Panther put them as a cross table, but you could think of many applications more.

I have seen the Dana dolly and it's pretty nice. It's definitely not a Camtram however. The CamTram on a 'Track In The Box" is completely silent. The wheels on the powder coated finish of the track are the key. What a tool- www.trackinthebox.net. Rugged, modular, light weight and totally silent. The perfect combo.
