  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Epic S, Epic M, Epic X, Epic Lite, Scarlet 2/3" - S35 - FF35

OK, a few weeks ago I came across a thread that listed the 6K FF Scarlet, what happened to that? If I am wrong about that, sorry.

http://reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=38274 :
Praise God, here is a mention of the release dates for the scarlet 2/3 and s35 models that people keep arguing doesn't exist ;) .

This is something that I too, want to know.

Originally there were plans to make a FF35 Epic and a FF35 Scarlet (before any name changing happened). It has been confirmed that the FF35 Epic is happening:

The Monstro sensor... FF35, 645 and 617, are all moving down the development path. You will see them and you won't know what to do with all the resolution. :-)

Jim

But I haven't found any other posts that suggest Red have any ambitions to do more varying models of the Epic Lite. Has anyone heard otherwise?

From 2009.

That doesn't mean it didn't exist Terry.

I don't think peoples complaints about slipping dates are that unreasonable, we could probably have had an under $5K 4K camera recording to computer 4 years ago, but doing super efficient and cheap custom silicon instead takes time. From the area of DIY cheap Digital Cinema cameras, FPGA and custom silicon are red herrings if you are not rich that takes up lots of time and cash, something you could do in parallel to making money from a shipping product (though the elphel FPGA is pre-made). If I put together 4 cheap consumer custom chip sets (maybe 4 sensors through prism like the SHD Olympus ENG camera did around 2004/2005) but 6mp60fps low priced sensors have been available for maybe 3 or 4 years) we could have had 96mb/s h264 inter 4K for a couple of thousand dollars for a couple of years now, at 60fps maybe back then. Consumer camera chip sets have been able to input 60fps 6mp+ Raw for the last three of 4 years now, a couple years at the low end, it is just that they weren't capable of doing much with it. They lacked the processing power to compress it with h264, and likely jpeg, though the sort of simple compression schemes we were investigating 4-6 years ago for DIY digital cinema might have been supported, even with a simple fpga co-processing extension (we are talking about 2:1 compression here just enough to simplify drive raids).

What we get from waiting, is the best of the best of high end custom silicon. That is the understanding of the benefit.

Thanks

Wayne.

Jarred listed those dates as targets assuming nothing else went wrong. After those were announced Red lost its China manufacturing partner and they encountered a serious bug in the early software builds that took them nearly 5 months to find and kill.
For a relatively young company getting a product this sophisticated to market doesn't necessarily follow a predictable schedule. This is why the big companies never even announce a new camera until it is at the end of development and ready for production.
If Red followed a similar policy we would not have heard of Epic until last September and Scarlet would not have been mentioned at all until NAB this year.
You probably won't hear anything more about the Monstro FF35 and larger sensor models until they are much further along in the development process. Red has learned its lessons.
Personally I like that Red has shared its development process and actively engages with its user communities for ideas and input into features that people want during that process. It is a very different path.

As a newbie looking into getting an Epic, this thread helps make sense of all this stuff. I'm left with one question...will the Epic-S have the HDRx feature, or is this info not out yet?

That chart is great. Would be better if it listed "confirmed" and "speculated" features listed under each model.

You guys are awesome....thanks for the info!

Well, thing about RED - nothing is really "confirmed" until we have paid for it and its in our hands.

Once the products are in the RED Store and the specs are all posted there, we won't need charts like that. And we can all celebrate!

I'm so confused, so: Current known Epic lineup is:

EPIC-M
limited, full priced, 'alpha' stage - $58k

EPIC-X
trade in for R1 owners, comes with lots of modules - $28k

EPIC-S35
main production Epic for R1 stage 3.5 owners, and non R1 owners, no modules - $28k

EPIC-S
Formerly Scarlet-S35, no details yet, entry level epic - ~$12k

Is this correct?

I don't think there will be one called Epic-S35. It will just be called Epic-X.

epic-x is 19.5 not 28 and it isnt trade in.. you keep your red one..
stage 3 is for current red one owners who want to trade in their red one.

Stage 3 should be called Epic-X too. Even Stage 4's (new customers) should be called Epic-X.

Why add another name to the lineup when the actual Brain is exactly the same? Keep it simple to avoid all the confusion.

Epic-M (same Brain as Epic-X, but machined)

Epic-X (all Epic stages, $28k for Stage 4)

Epic-S (different Brain, lower frame rates)

All things subject to change...

I think Curran pretty much nailed it.

Epic Lineup

Epic-M | $58K
Early "Alpha/Beta" Release Cameras of Epic-X
Hand Machined Bodies, Titanium PL Mounts
Only available to select customers.
May be available after Epic-X release for those who want machined rather than case bodies.

Epic-X | $28K
The flagship Epic camera.

Epic-S | $12K
The "entry level" Epic camera.

--

Feature and capability wise, Epic-M and Epic-X should be perfect equals. Epic-S will offer decreased features in some areas, like frame rates.
