  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Positives of 2/3rds

Scarlet is 10.1mm x 5.35mm 1.89:1 digital cinema format. For HD it conforms closely to the 2/3" reference standard of 9.6mm x 5.4mm. More like standard 16mm film than S16mm.

Thanks David, thats a great reference.

Other than that, there is the increase in depth of field, about 2.5-stops more on average compared to Super-35... that can be an advantage in some cases, an annoyance in others.

The man speaks the truth.

Outdoors on a sunny day in New Orleans I need a 4-stop ND on my D7000 just to get to ~f/4-5.6 @ ISO100. With even a 4/3" camera I'd have no DoF control at all.

On the other hand, shooting indoors with no natural light is often like "hey, why is only one of her eyes in focus?!"

I love having the OPTION of shallow DoF when I need it, and I think APS/S35 is the sweet spot for that. I don't understand how 5D II shooters do it...

Speaking of ND filters, isn't the Scarlet fixed supposed to have built-in ND filters? Or did I imagine that?

I would expect you will need external filters for that one. Either with a matte box or screw ons.

I wonder if the mini primes will all have the same thread size. They look like they'll probably take relatively small filters if you were to opt for screw-on filters and a shade instead of a matte box.

I'm mostly going to use zooms with front element sizes ranging from 72mm to around 104mm. So matte box for me. The primes I have are on the wide and fast end of the scale, so still relatively large front elements. One I look forward to playing with is an old Elgeet-Navitar f1.5 5mm rectilinear lens. It is huge, bigger than the Angie 12-120 zoom in every dimension. Not sure exactly what the front element size is, but it is in the 104mm range.
