I do not post too often, and a lot of the time it is negative. But I have been lurking around since the first announcement of the Scarlet. (3k for 3k) I have come full circle from I cannot wait until the Scarlet comes out and saving for it, to I no longer care there are other cameras out there (bought myself an 8 core mac in the mean time with the money) back again to I cannot wait.
Here is what brought me back, and why.
1. If the Scarlet lives up to what RED says it can do (I do not doubt it) it is going to be the best camera out there for under 10K. In my opinion, the 3k for 3k was a mistake in marketing. It still sticks in peoples minds. Once I got over the price and compare the said specs to anything else there is no competion for the assumed price. The specs are truely awesome for the camera.
2. For awhile I was leaning towards the AF100. My dslr is an Olympus with a m4/3rds sensor. I have a couple of pieces of glass that people are saying work great on it. Looking at the color and the dynamic range steps, HDRX has won me over, plus the the RED RAW.
3. I am currently deployed to the middle east for the Air National Guard. Being made in the U.S. does mean a lot to me, so this is a big factor for me. (I know it is not for everyone.) I get back in the late summer, so with timing everything hopefully will work out. Sometimes I wish I had a Scarlet with me. HDRx would look great with some of inside the aircraft shots, where people are boarding, or jumping out. (I wish I already had a Scarlet.)
4. I will have the money. This is an important factor. Before my deployment, (I got rid of my apartment and all my bills so all I am doing is saving), my savings was would barely allow me to purchase a Scarlet. After I was laid off from a TV station (Pappas when they went under), I was surviving on my own with weddings and local commercials (Plus the one weekend a month,) for about 2 years. (I am good with a camera, but I am a very very poor face to face salesman.) So times were tight, and the Scarlets price was slowly creeping up. But I found a job at another station (a good paying part time job! so I have TIME as well as a stable income.) So in the end I will have the money to purchase a Scarlet.
5. The Ninja. For times I do not need to mess around with RED RAW and HDRx (like weddings when needed, god I hate weddings), the Ninja will give me the record time needed and streamline the post production work in FCP.
6. The community. I maybe a lurker, but I keep up with what is going on. How the RED team actually interacts with the message board. Granted I think a lot of people are a bit overboard with the fandom, but it is all in good fun.
My gripes, only 2. The first is easy, the scarlet is not out yet!!! I would love to put money down on it. My next is RED's "professional" cameras only. I strongly disagree with this. Here is why, it isolates the low end consumer. If I bought a prosumer panasonic and I had a good experience with it, guess what, when I can I will pick up the next level up and be brand loyal. Plus half my accessories all ready work. I already know the basic of the internal menu options and the post production process of a P2 card. Heck if I have a few P2 cards it is a big incentive to stick with panasonic. The prosumer market will eventually be the high end market. We all have to start somewhere.
The bottomline, I am back on board, and I do not think you will get rid of me for a while.
