"Things are looking up for transgender teen Sam when he falls for a beautiful girl in a nightclub. But how will Sam break the news that he’s actually a she?"

Here's some grabs from a short I directed last May. Shot on RED ONE. Required almost complete ADR so has been a while in post. It's just been accepted into the Melbourne Queer Film Festival (March) and BFI London Lesbian and Gay Film Festival 2011 (March/April). Check it out if you're going to either of those festivals.

I've included a few ungraded grabs too.

Cast
Sam - Kat Redstone
Dilly - Natalie Marie Perry
Josh - David Atkins

Crew
Director - Ric Forster
Director of photography - Adam Etherington
Writer/Producer - Becky Simpson
Executive Producer - Diane Whitley

Thanks for your comments guys.

Cail - as far as I know it was older Panchros but I'd have to check with my DP. They were his own set.

If you're based in Melbourne, it's on at the Melbourne Queer Film Festival next month. Their schedule is released in a week's time so I'll post up the screening date.

Zakaree - grain was just bog standard filter in After Effects, though a couple of the shots were inherently grainier from the out (most of the dance floor stuff was 2K at 100fps).

Few more grabs:

Any reservation I had about getting a set of Panchros is completely gone.

The old Panchros are amazing glass with a couple of mechanical issues here and there. The new ones I haven't used yet but would seem to be excellent lenses for the price.

If he owns a set of new Panchros I would be very interested in talking about subhiring them out :)

Definitely let us know what the MQFF dates are. Would be great to see it.

Who did the grade?

The new Panchros are awesome. I'm seriously thinking of getting a set. The only reason I haven't ordered is that I would have to sell my RPP's to do it. ...I like my RPPs and I'm not ready to part with them just yet.

Thanks for the kind words about the work guys..

I didn't realise Ric had actually posted this stuff up here so it's nice to know it was received well.

The Panchro's I own are SII/III vintage Van Diemen Rehoused ones. I absolutely love them to bits and swear by Cooke glass when working with RED. I have to say Jeff I would opt for the new Panchros over a set of RPP's any day, particularly now you have the extra stop and lattitude of the MX sensor to play with, or if working on Alexa etc... but that is personal taste. I do rate the RPP's and have used them several times.

I'm saving up for my set of new Panchros, they are next on the list though a little way off! I have a set of MKIII superspeeds for projects where I need the extra contrast or sharpness but once 800iso becomes the norm I'll probably invest.

I've shot bundles of projects on my old Panchros, they do have a specific market but offer such wonderful contrast rendition and 'feel' they are 100% worth an investment.

If you'd like to see any more stuff on the old Cooke's you can check out the Gallery section of my site (www.adametherington.co.uk) and have a look at 'Bipolar' 'Shortcut' 'Lost Bullets' 'The Drummond Will' or 'Real Enough.' I would be happy to send over some higher res stills for anyone toying with getting some but wanting to see more stuff shot on them before they do so.

older glass on newer digital sensors is the key! been saying it forever

I agree, but you can also use newer lenses with filtration, which gives you more range with one set.

Let me clarify... when I say that I agree it is because I think the combo looks amazing.

And great photography on those grabs!

Thanks for clarifying re: the lenses Adam!

The screening dates have come through - so if any of you are in London or Melbourne...

Showing at the Melbourne Queer Film Festival on Sunday 20th March at 4pm, ACMI Cinemas. More details available from the MQFF website.

Screening at the BFI London Lesbian and Gay Film Festival:
Saturday 2nd April, 2pm, NFT2
Sunday 3rd April, 6.50pm, STUDIO

Hi Rainer- thanks for your comments.

I actually did the grade myself - directly in Final Cut. It really didn't need much work - just warmed the highlights and gave the shadows a blue tint. Most of the look was captured in camera.

Just a little update on the film - we've been lucky enough to be accepted into a number of festivals, including the Cannes Short Film Corner, London Independent Film Festival, Milan International Lesbian and Gay Film Festival, Rushes Soho Shorts Festival and Gaze Film Festival in Dublin.

There's also a little trailer available online. Viewable in HD on Vimeo.
