  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Thanks Jim,

that marionette motion looks great and now I'm finally convinced to that amazing RED HDRx capabilities at the standard speed of 24fps...

Now the next question should be: How about slow motion and HDRx?

The motion clip...

I just did an "Export for the Web" in QT 7 so the clip looks a bit flat...

Jim,

I don't want to pixel peep this mov too much as I know that gets to you, so can you tell us if this is about the best we can expect now re:the motion blending, or is it something that's being worked on with new algorithms?

PS I think this is going to be a great tool.

If you read the thread (post 72, 73 and 80)... I have said that this is the most remedial blend option and that we have more sophisticated ones in our development apps, including Graeme's "magic button".

Hey guys,

sorry to jump in at this late stage, but I just wondered:

Am I missing something here? I watched the clip with the puppet six times now, and for the life of me couldn't figure out, what the discussion is about. To me it looked completely normal.

This is no joke, I'm sincere here. Can someone please explain what artifacts are in the clip? EDIT: ... and, if this is the 'faulty' version, what (the hell) Graemes 'magic button' does? From this clip, I can only assume it doubles the DR and triples the resolution...

cheers, and all the best

d.

Your not alone in thinking it looked fine, and for people pixel peeping, its a 800kb file, its not for pixel peeping for god sake! Its just a quick demonstration.

Great. Would love to see this clip with the 'magic' enabled. That's the process that solves the highlight problem, such as the fire clip you posted?

cheers

Are the streams saved as in a single file ? Dindn´t play arround with it yet so i don´t know. I think it´s time for DaVinci and others to enable HDR Support like they did enable 3D support, so that we can take full advantage of HDR in the final grading.

Are you talking about the file that Jim posted? If so, that is using HDRx™. If you look at the R3D file, or the pictures in this post, you can see the nomral exposure (top image), highlight exposure (middle image), and HDRx exposure (bottom image and video Jim posted). The clouds are clipped in the top image and preserved in the middle image and bottom images.

Currently the two streams are in a single R3D file. Don't imagine that's going to change. As Jim mentioned, they will be coming out with tools that allow you to extract individual streams for post workflows that want to treat them separately.

From what I understand, it halves your available "normal" frame rates.

Correct. When HDRx is enabled, max frame rate you can select on current build is 48fps (which will bump up to 60fps in a future build once 120fps is re-introduced.)

If HDRx isn't enabled, and I set the frame rate above 48fps and then enable HDRx, frame rate is automatically lowered to 48fps.

Absolutely incredible. I would so love to see a hand held or steadicam from inside a house that goes to the outside. I can't see it not doing it. Motion is amazing. Once again well done, well worth the extra wait,

Kind of funny, but this is actually a very good statement, in my opinion.

HDRx gives us more dynamic range, as pointed out in posts above (compare the clouds/sky in the original and then in the HDRx images).

But it doesn't give us weird motion, it doesn't give us messed up colors, and it doesn't give us any other artifacts that are obviously visible in this sort of presentation.

Two frames out of RCX combined...rough color work...

I disagree, there is still the problem here of highlights on the x-track. Look at the hand, it has a very sharp, and large halo around it as it moves out of frame. While not a big deal on this clip it would obviously cause problems in many situations if this was the focus of the shot.

Seems to me this is blending from the x-track where there is a very sharp high shutter speed on an area with a highlight. However jim has stated that the new magic sauce is intended to deal with this problem, which is why I commented I'd love to see this with the new 'button' applied. HDRx is not finished and so I'm looking at the positives of what it could do when this is all bugged out; amazing....but also I wouldn't go as far as saying this clip has perfect motion - the doll looks fine but it's moving bright areas where the problems will arise with basic blends. I think many missed it because it's not the focus of the shot.

For a work in progress though it is very encouraging.

I thought that at first too. But if you look at the actual X and A frames individually, you'll see that the long exposure frame, all by itself, has garden-variety vertical motion blur that is the main source of what appears to be halo. Agree that the sophisticated blend is going to be the truly interesting thing to check out.

Hey John

Interesting, I'm only going off the quicktime movie so couldn't see the two streams. It'll be really interesting to see how this is dealt with as effectively I guess you'd want to motion blur the x-track in the same way that the a-track is to simulate the same shutter.... or something..lol :-)
