  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

SSD ETA & general reactions

RED Drives are technically discontined, but as I understood it before, they were still going to do their best to fulfill the existing back-log of orders for them and potentially still supply more of them if it made sense. The reason for the back-order and unavailability wasn't because they discontinued them. It was due to a parts shortage from one or more suppliers. ...At least that's the way I understood the whole story.

Correct, we made enough RED-DRIVES to try to fulfill the people who had them on backorder. Those people were given option of getting a RED-DRIVE or switching to a REDMAG order. Since some people opted for REDMAG, we have some RED-DRIVE left for those that are interested. Once these are all sold, they are done. No more will be manufactured. But, yes, we will still support them for repair.

If you have a RED-DRIVE on backorder and have not decided if you want it or REDMAG, make up your mind quickly because the RED-DRIVE should go pretty fast. Just contact your BOMB SQUAD rep to complete that RED-DRIVE order....

This would suggest that the backorder is fulfilled.

This would suggest that we have emailed everyone with a RED-DRIVE backorder and given them this option, yup. If that notice hit your junk folder or something, just email your rep.

Brent,
I'm a future Scarlet Fixed user and I'm ready to pull the trigger on the Red Drive as the cheapest storage solution for extended interviews where portability is not an issue. The store says it's compatible with Scarlet. I'm sure it can handle any data rate I would use for interviews, but I'm not clear on the interfaces and a quick check of the store and search didn't come up with definitive answers.

How does it connect to the camera? Would it need the same cable as the Red One?

What are the interfaces for download?

And is it especially convenient to download RED CF or SSD, i.e. as a backup when in the field? That is - direct download with no laptop?

Can it be powered by REDVolt or other battery?

This may seem silly to do this when Scarlet still has not been released, so please let me know if this makes absolutely no sense.

Thanks!

... and they have all made their final decisions.

Last time I checked, the SSD delay was due in part to not having those responses.

I Don't think it will work with scarlet, red has made no mention of a drive port on either body.

As for saying its scarlet compatible, I think they just added that image to all the pages, since on the RED CF module, it says its r1, epic, and scarlet compatible... when of course its not.

WOW! So I can't trust the info on the SALES website?

Look, I'm fine with due dates and features subject to change since RED is on the bleeding edge in so many ways.

But to have incorrect info about legacy product compatibility!??? This will hurt your rep as a professional company for professionals, and cause confusion among the many newbies who seem to be lurking and posting in increasing numbers.

This is not correct. There is an adapter that accommodates the Red Drive. It works on both the Epic and Scarlet. Remember, this is a modular system.

Why on earth would you assume that the sales web site would be wrong and some random post on a forum would be correct? The drives will work with the new cameras. All of them. There are limitations, and a module is required, but they will work.

OK, my bad. I got impatient with no reply from RED for what I though was a simple question.

But if it requires a module, which I assume would be the pro i/o module, I still think that should be spelled out. If that's the case I would just go with ssd.

And I didn't consider Zac's post to be random. I've seen a lot of reliable info from him before. But yeah, there seems to be more than the usual amount of misinformation floating around here. If I added to the mess, excuse me.

I love this SSD business but what's up with shipping turnaround times? I have a friend who ordered a Red One SSD module & cards back mid-Decemeber and still hasn't recieved a notification. I'm interested in going this route but it would be nice to know if it's going to be 2 weeks or 2 months before I get it...

Just so you know... I ordered a Red-Ram in April '10 and have been considered on the backorder list. I've been checking in with bomb squad rep Matt Klamm every 2-3 weeks since December 1st and while very friendly, they don't seem to be able to give any sort of time frame for a module or SSD mag. Both of which I'm desperate to get.

I just checked in today and it's the same deal. I have no idea if it's a manufacturing problem, delivery problem, or technical problem but there isn't any insight as to when or where these things may become available.

Beyond frustrating.

I have only seen one post concerning the RED drives capabilities, even from Stuart, back in 2008, alot could have changed by then, and now with the RED Drives discontinued, there would be no point using the drives, since getting your hands on would will be difficult.

Note some of the renders on the red web site show RED-DRIVE / RED-RAM in certain configurations.

So that is the intent, but you will need a specific interface module to do that...

So I assume back in 08, they had plans, but now, nothing, so in a way we were both right and wrong, I try not to spread FUD, so I research as much as possible, but I apologize.

This troubles me. I thought Brent just said they already went through the entire backorder list? Or was that for Red-drives only? I kinda wish Red would just put their products up in the store when you can actually go down and buy them in the store. Limited Availability is no good because who knows when that might be. We have to plan our business expenses and a somewhat loose timeframe would be gold for people like me ...

Just to clarify, it's beyond frustrating for me due to not being able to purchase large capacity reliable media that doesn't drop frames, since I do a lot of aerial work.

I'm frustrated at the situation, not necessarily with Red. Just thought I'd share my experience. No bad attitude here.
