  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Optimo 15-40mm - full coverage at 5K

Thanks a lot for the update on the Optimo 24-290, 30mm @ 6'+ is not too bad, I need to inquire about this 5k adapter though.

Emmanuel

Will there be an ability to window the sensor to Super 35 dimensions to ensure coverage from most PL lenses? I can see how a larger format will be handy in some instances for VFX but the resolution of the camera should still be above that of the RED One at Super 35 dimensions. I'm sure all those modes including anamorphic will be a part of future firmware updates just like 4kHD on the Red One etc....

Of course you can window down to whatever size you need so no lens will vignette.

Also remember that you can simply shoot 5K and set up your frame lines [and post crop] to any pixel resolution you desire.

This is what we're doing on Spiderman - it gives us the most flexibility.

Especially true for 3D as it allows for post convergence, 3D correction, stabilization, etc without having to zoom in.

For 2D, recording the lookaround are great for stabilization and repo.
Especially on hand held shots.

! My emphasis added.

I remember asking about this long ago, for reasons of stabilization in post. I thought the answer at the time was lookaround cannot be recorded. So did I misunderstand, or is ability to record lookaround a new feature? And will it be available for us Scarlet Fixed run-and-gunners?

This is basically setting the record area to larger than the intended target format and using inset frame lines for framing.

No lookaround at 5k though (I guess), if that's what you mean.

But if you crop out the center 1920x1080 piece, as an unrealistic example, you'd have a massive lookaround.

The frame controls in REDCine X, lets you crop to any size and anything that's left on the outside becomes lookaround.

What process do you use to frame lines?

I knew what resolution we were going to crop material to in post, so I simply added frame lines to the camera that matched. The frame line and crop processes are not directly interlinked.

I have questions about the current EPIC camera build.

What framerates and resolutions are currently enabled?
Has any of the audio been enabled?

David.

The build I've been using has up to 5K@120FPS. Audio is not enabled on the build I've been using.

My thinking is why have a new number that means a ratio when you could just have the actual ratio.

Hope I'm making sense

Ratios are the only option, no numbers. I would not be surprised if a build of RED ONE firmware changed over to ratios as well... it's much clearer!

Nikon mount is coming. Epic-M ships with Titanium PL mount.

Mark,

Can you use the 7" Red LCD with the new 5" touchscreen at the same time?

Thanks,

Bernard

Not unless you have another module. You can view many addition monitors using the HD-SDI or HDMI port.

Okay ... I have gotten one too many emails asking why I have not been posting on REDUSER. Dino emailing me last night to make sure I was "okay" was the last straw. (I love you Dino!)

Here's the deal .... I know everyone wants R3Ds, images and video, etc. - and I have always tried my best to share and contribute to the REDUSER community - so ... I do take it all seriously and I do feel a little pressure because I want to share. And as much as I am no stranger to shameless self-promtion - having this camera is LIFE CHANGING.

I the beginning - I believed in RED simply because I wanted Ted to be right. When he told me he was quitting AJA I could see the excitement and belief in his eyes. He was "all in". My gut told me to listen to Ted - as goofy as he is some times. And I went "all in" and managed to convince my business partner that RED "just might be the future".

When I met Jim, Graeme and Stuart - I started to suspect that there was something very special coming together and I should do everything in my power to be close to it.

Fast forward to today.

NEVER did I think we would have a camera technology this exciting and powerful.

We are shooting EPIC every single day. Testing. Learning. Experimenting. I'm awestruck by simple images captured with this camera when projected.

YES - we have done the comparison tests.

Results? Nothing comes close.

Seriously. Drink all the Alexa/F3/Canon Koolaide you want. Projected on a screen EPIC leaves the competition calling out "FOCUS!!!"

But ... people are going to say "of course OFFHOLLYWOOD says that" they are "the RED fanboys", "they only rent RED cameras", etc. So ... I've been focused on testing the camera, post workflows and pipelines and strategically showing some "special" people the camera and what it can do. We want to make sure we have all the pieces in place, and the proper knowledge and expertise to support large projects shooting on this camera.

I'm not a cinematographer. I'm just a passionate guy who loves the process of making movies and believes that technology can empower creative people to do incredible things. I will post a bunch of stuff we have shot internally - but the way I am most excited to contribute is to support and service the best cinematographers with this technology and provide the best pipelines and finishing services and all the optional technology you can wrap around it.

I'm also very excited to share MORE information, opinions and observations to this community. OFFHOLLYWOOD is launching a new website March 4th - with a few surprises right out of the gate - specifically a new blog by yours truly with a new objective featuring weekly rants and fun stuff.

I often laugh when I hear competing companies talk about protecting their "secret" workflows and techniques. And how every post facility has a "proprietary software" solution. Pretty silly when you consider the best chefs in the world publish their recipes in cookbooks.

Anyway .. I just wanted to check in and let everyone know that I'm doing fine - and that EPIC will truly blow you away.

Buckle up. The real fun has not even started yet ...

Thanks Francesco - I did some work for Cinecitta Studios so I have been to Rome - amazing city!! I'll actually be in NYC, sending two our guys with Bond for the Milan shoot - I'm busy prepping a 3D feature that rolls March 14.

Will it be shot on Epic?

Does anyone know whether you can set up two monitors on your Epic - using your old Red LCD? I've asked before and it was confirmed but that was before Epic was in the wild. Has anyone tried it?
