Let Me In (2010)

It's a tough call this year. No one single film really stands out. I really liked "Social Network." I was impressed with "Inception", and I got a kick out of "True Grit." But the more I think about it, the more I loved "Let Me In", a subtle, dark remake of a recent, acclaimed Swedish horror film.

Normally I would not consider a remake as best picture of the year, let alone a horror film. But what can I say? This film really got to me. It stands on its own, and speaks for itself.

What film do you think was the best of the year?

Tom are you joking. "Let Me In" was so weak compared to "Let the Right One In" its not even funny. I mean weak on every level, not just in how they didn't tell the story right but in also the look of the film. The original was shot way better, not to mention edited and directed. The girl from "Kickass" is awesome but not so much in this film.

I totally disagree, Drew! I watched both of the films back-to-back, and found the remake superior. Better actors, better cinematography, a slightly reworked plot (involving Captain Staros from "Thin Red Line" as a cop)... I preferred it to the Swedish version.

Well I've only seen the re-make once, so maybe I should give it a second go. But I really don't think my mind is going to be changed. "Let the Right One In" is just a way better film in my opinion. It just tells the story so much better than what the re-make tried to do.

The Social Network, INCEPTION (and you know how I feel about INCEPTION Tom), The King's Speech, True Grit, Biutiful, Blue Valentine, Shutter Island, Rabbit Hole, and Black Swan. Just a list of all the films that are better than Let Me In.

In your opinion.

I have not seen "Blue Valentine" yet. Might watch it tonight. I also have not seen "Biutiful."

Oh disagree totally. The RED MX darling that is The Social Network is absolutely fantastic. The Social Network as well as The King's Speech, are incredible films that have really strong, dare I say flawless screenplays.

"Social Network" is probably #2 in my book. Fantastic film, no doubt.

I am with Andrew on this one.
"Let me in" doesn't come in any way close to the original.
Good intentions and slick cinematography, but that is all...

Black swan, King's speach, Social Network, enter the void, Rabbit hole (great little movie)

I was just discussing this with a friend the other day. It does feel like a bit of a weak year for film... certainly not a deep a pool of great films as in years past. Anyhow...

1. Social Network
2. Black Swan
3. The Town
4. The Kings Speech
5. The Tillman Story
6. The Kids Are Alright
7. Exit Through the Gift Shop
8. The Ghost Writer
9. Inception
10. Kick Ass

There are a few "undistinguished" pics on the list but what the hell, I enjoyed them. There are also some potentially excellent movies that I haven't seen yet such as I Am Love, Waiting for Superman, etc. I personally feel that the Fincher and Aronofsky were playing on another level from everyone else this year. Would love to see Fincher get a best director Oscar.

Then you must have not seen TRON 3D!!!! That screenplay was perfect.

Kidding aside, if I had to pick one: 127 Hours did it for me. But maybe I'm biased because it was shot practically in my backyard and many friends worked on the film, but man was it a great film.

Winters Bone moved me much more than any large film this year, and I watched probably 80-100 films. I'm surprised its not making more folks' top 10 here.

A Life Ascending, a small film I've not heard mentioned here, also is in my top 10.

The short film "Salt" - australian, 2010 (not the OTHER salt) deserves huge recognition, but I've not seen or heard of it beyond Banff. Tom, you would deeply appreciate this film, look it up.

I too am very surprised Tom that you prefer the remake to the original - Let The Right One In really struck me when I saw it, and is still in my tick list for great films of recent year.

"Blue Valentine" was certainly the best American feature from this past year. And Gosling and Williams gave two of the best performances, too. That Gosling wasn't even nominated for any of the major acting awards is a complete travesty.

There were a bunch of other fine foreign films. "Film Socialisme" and "Uncle Boonmee" were masterpieces. "Poetry" and "Mysteries of Lisbon" were really great films (some really beautiful Genesis lensing on "Mysteries of Lisbon"). And even though I first saw it in 2009, "White Material" was released commercially this year and would almost definitely be in my top 3 if it weren't already last year's top 10 for me.

Maybe I'm the only one here, but I was actually really disappointed in the screenplay for "Social Network." It had really snappy dialogue (no surprise there), and was structured really well, but it was pretty simplistic, psychologically reductive, and had very little to say about anything to do with social networking. To be fair, it's a far better screenplay than most that get produced, but it's not the work of genius that everyone seems to be lauding it as. Of course, Fincher et al more than made up for the screenplay's shortcomings, IMO, and the end result is still a pretty great movie.

Still, I wasn't floored by too many new movies this year. Maybe only "Film Socialisme," "Uncle Boonmee" and "Blue Valentine." "Shutter Island", "Social Network" and "The American" were excellent, too. "Scott Pilgrim" was certainly the most fun I had in theaters this year, and "The Town" was pretty great, too. Affleck's a pretty major talent behind the camera. "Inception" had a few major problems for me, almost all of which are forgiven for Joseph Gordon-Levitt channeling Fred Astaire in the zero-G hallway fight. And Marion Cotillard's eyes. Still, there was a moment upon watching it when I thought "Inception" was going to be Nolan's "Vertigo," and I was terribly disappointed to upon realizing that it was instead going to be a much more routine heist film (though very complicated and visually appealing, to be sure).

EDIT: Oh yeah, I almost forgot. "Carlos." Really excellent film. People should definitely see it if they have a 5 hour chunk of time to do so. It's well worth it.

I still need to see "Let Me In." The trailer didn't make it look terribly interesting, but Tom, you're not the first person to tell me that it's well worth seeing. I'll have to check it out.

The director Murray is a friend of mine and a valued member of the Timescapes forum. I've yet to see the film. I guess the Bluray is out now, so I will have to watch it soon.

Some of Murray's latest work: http://vimeo.com/16039845

I will be sure to see "Winter's Bone".

Tom I have to strongly agree with Andrew and others here
The original is just too perfect for me to watch the remake, it upset me very much to even learn of it the day a friend came and told me
Too many reasons to get into it
But I must admit your post makes me a little curious to maybe give the new one a day in court

On the best Film of 2010
In my Opinion it goes to "I Love you Philip Morris"
I really Liked "Social Network"
Very well done
I thought for sure "Black Swan" was my favorite
It was cinematically and emotionally beautiful
Nothing like it for too long
Daranofskys finest yet I believe
and I thought he would never outdo the perfect "Requiem for a dream"

After seeing all of the films being considered
1 I love you Philip Morris
2 Black Swan
3 The Fighter
4 Social Network

If you haven't seen "I love you Philip Morris" I strongly recommend it.
Incredibly funny and yet the most beautiful real film
