  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I realize that SSD is THE way to go as we move along and into the future with EPIC and possibly for higher frames and datarates with the Scarlet. However, I am interested what the status is on the larger 64GB CF cards that have been announced and been shown in use.

Has this specific development been dropped due the popularity you forsee with the SSD's? Maybe like you dropped the 2.8"LCD?

Curiously...

i've been wondering the same thing joseph. trying to figure out which way i need to go initially.

Jarred said himself they are bypassing the larger CF cards all together and not bothering them at all. they just couldn't qualify fast enough cards at that capacity. maybe they'll come back to life as the "cheapest"media solution for their camera systems. but as SSD prices drop, which they will, i think you'll find the price margin between SSD and large capacity cf cards to have little to no difference soon enough...

Interesting. When was this said?

Matter of fact, I think if you do the math, per GB, SSDs are right there now.

well.

i remember someone (stuart?) saying that they weren't dropping the CF program, and theree was more to come.

also, i remember jim saying that they were pricing the ssds for where they projected prices to be, right now they seem to be subsidizing them a bit.

i'm leaning towards the ssd's right now. especially with that ssd 2 cf adaptor.

Might be referring to this post:

As for 64GB compact flash cards.. forget about them. Yesterday's news. We are jumping forward a few steps.

Last price on the 64GB CF before the above quote was $1100, if i remember correctly. The 64GB SSD being $200 cheaper, not to mention faster, probably has some weight here. The savings on 5 cards would make up for the difference in module prices...

Though as Paul mentions, RED have asserted CF is not dead. They've also mentioned that CFAST, once more widespread, would likely be a new media option.

I'm pretty sure Red said they'd killed them and that the current 16gb CF are the last Red CFs

Thanks guys. It only makes sense I'd guess. As I am going with the EPIC-S (most likely right now) the SSD was what I was going with and to fit according to my needs I see myself getting 2x 128GB "Hershey" bars...

Greetings all, I'm on the Verge of Buying a Red One MX with a CF reader onboard and X3 500GB Red Drives, my questions are as follows:
Are SSD's more reliable than the 16 GB CF Cards or not? (dropped frames etc)
Is there a noticeable Difference in power consumption between the CF Cards and SSD's?
Has anyone ever taken apart a Red Drive? if so is it possible to upgrade the Disk's inside with either SSD's or bigger Spinners?

Thank you in advance

Zombie thread alert

Overall I think the Redmag SSDs have proven more physically reliable than the Red CF cards. Certainly mechanically the connectors are far superior for constant heavy use, and there were cases of bent CF module pins when users weren't careful. But not aware of major dropped frame issues on the Red CF cards.

SSDs will be almost certainly be significantly higher power consumption, but only Red knows the figures.

You can't upgrade the internal disks of the Red Drives - Red had proprietary firmware on them to optimise them for reliable data writing from empty to full.

What would be great is to allow the use of 3rd party Cf cards with an firmware upgrade..

Some people are still using the Red one Mx out there.. And the 16gb Cf card doesn't allow a 4k 16:9 recording @24fps in compression 42, which would be the minimum for a Red Camera..

I experienced that yesterday in a shoot when trying to switch from 4,5k Ws to 4k 16:9 (the 4k 16:9 has more resolution than 4,5k ws, that's why Cf cards can't handle it but, come on...)
