  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet 2/3" Fixed @ CES

Bones are good. Check back on Friday, and Ill show you someone else that really likes bones.

Heh heh heh....

It sounds like there might be a completely unexpected 5K sequel announcement.

I'm not sure I get this. A working Scarlet fixed but no actual footage shot by the camera? Someone explain to me why there's no footage. Surely the most important thing. If it's working where's the footage?

One word, "Foreplay."

Tiger R3D files come on! very nice, but thats not really much of a showing, streets scenes, countryside normal everyday stuff even back lot. Wouldn't to much to do.

Stop by the Intel booth and look at the transcode engine on Sandy Bridge. Accelerate R3d files with it.

At some point it becomes more effective and less hassle to get a little generator at your base camp than buying 10+ batteries.
Unless you don't have a base camp :)

I like to keep things simple, so yes, generator is difficult. This also goes with charging time. Nothing worse then the sound of running a generator when you in the deep bush... except may a low battery light. You also have to factor in carrying gas etc.. As you add more and more people, then you may as well shoot epic with a box of primes.

The battery in the side handle is lasting around an hour of powered mixed standby / recording with side handle, Redmote and 5" LCD.

Thanks Jarred for the times, 1-hour is a little dis-heartning for a field camera. Hopefully the setup of the camera allows for us to use things like BomB EVF and it can work with-out the redmote to save power. Even turning the fans down or off. Additionally if I can use a third party LCD which take a battery with a better life, maybe extend battery life within my window. With the touch features I'm doubtful though. Simple things like allowing the camera to go to a user defined standby power can help if set at 30 secs or 1 minute. Power consumption may not be that important for big crew stuff, but for smaller crews it is huge!!! Some of my locations are only worth shooting on RED because they are spectacular, but they are dam hard to get to.

Same thing for SSD, can a red station run off of battery?

I'm more likely to adapt my projects, or search better field power options like car inverters then compromise picture/sound quality. I must say it was nice to switch to DSLR for some of my projects just for power sake, but it won't hold me back from RED.

You will probably see some of this kind of stuff coming when the camera is closer to release and early production models are in the hands of people like Marc Pederson and Steve Gibby. That is still a few months away.
A few full resolution tiffs or high quality jpeg stills would show more about image quality than a highly compressed Vimeo video or something similar.

Jarred can audio levels be control via the menu whilst filming (how is volume controlled on scarlet), be just great for run and gun and one man outfits.

David in my experience apart from doing a test shoot which is always best, then the next best thing is native files from a camera, whether it be EX, AVCHD or R3D files and putting them through your own edit systems, l agree Vimeo tests can be very subjective.

Looks like a beautiful aquisition device, looking forward to seeing package prices. The side handle looks like a must for me . Wondering what it would be like to change functions without touch screen ? Thanks for the good news....... will cinema version be coming out around same time ?

If your complaint is about the amount of footage, then bare in mind that they are here to sell cameras, right now its focus is on the Epic, and how much footage from the epic do you see? A few shots because they are showing off the HDRX. In June you will have scarlet footage, in March you will have Epic footage, and in April you will have taxes :)

I think that this footage is old and doesn't do justice to the latest Scarlet prototype with the latest firmware and color science. :coolgleamA:

Michael Dalton, I am also interested in Scarlet for field work, and my plan was to buy a bunch of Red Volts and switch out as needed, and charge up whenever possible. The batteries are much less expensive than the media, which seems to be the bottleneck to me ($3,200 for a 256GB SSD mag!). Or am I missing something? You have a lot more experience than I do.

Really exciting stuff!

I assume that the EPIC-S will be out before the fixed Scarlet, since it is now an EPIC...has that been confirmed?

How would someone run that fixed Scarlet on a shoulder mount, ENG or Verite style, with only one control ring? Is there a way to control zoom and focus manually from the lens?

Not at all sure this is an accurate assumption. I don't think anything like this has been suggested or confirmed.
