Dear Redusers,

for a research project I am looking for some convincing examples of digital cinematography in 2010.

Which films shot digital did you like best? Are there any resources on these films available that describe the shooting?

Thanks for your replies,

Barbara

Sert is 99% right.

Why is that?

And other films (maybe shot on other cameras)?

Thanks for your suggestions,

Barbara

Best digital cinematography?

I don't know for sure.

I'd pick Deakins work on True Grit. True Grit was shot primarily on 35mm, but inserts were done with Alexa.

The Social Network was entirely RED, and it looked the way Fincher wanted. I wouldn't have shot it that way. I didn't like the choices made for the image.

The best RED film I saw anything from was Book of Eli. I liked the photography in Book of Eli better than TSN.

Skyline had a lot of technical flaws, places where it looks to me like they dropped the ball on workflow.

As a comparison, Avatar won the 2010 Oscar for Cinematography, shooting 3D on Sony F950 & Slumdog Millionaire won in 2009, and that shot with SI2K cameras. Both camera systems feature 2/3" sensors and 2k/1080p resolution.

Certified Copy. The image is fairly restrained and natural but the composition is quite incredible throughout, as with most of Kiarostami's work.

thanks searched but didnt find this thread..recently i read he s going to shoot on alexa. This makes me sad, film just lost legendary cinematographer.

I am a member of his forum and believe me, he is not walking away from film, just trying out a new tool. I love Roger's work, he is in my opinion the most talented dp working today but he does seem a little anti-red in some of his posts, not a big fan of the image out of the cam, he seems to like the Alexa more. I would really like to see him use the Epic but I don't think he will, he is a big Arri fan.

OK... first I won't lament any technology.

Second, I don't think "film" has "lost" Deakins. I expect that Deakins will continue to shoot film whenever the story, budget and production politics will work with film.

Lastly there is a bright side, Deakins seems to think that cameras like Alexa and RED MX are very good tools that do not appreciably constrain the cinematographer.

Aside from The Social Network, which was one of the best movies I've seen last year, I think Claudio Miranda's cinematography for Tron was very, very nice (though I didn't like the movie that much).

Re: Deakins

True Grit inserts were shot on film

I was shooting some inserts for 'True Grit' over the weekend and I realized I had been missing the whir of the film running through the gate and just the 'mystery' of emulsion

I have to say Deakins doesn't sound like a "fan" of this or that brand, imho, he's one of the best cinematographers in the world and chooses his tools depending on the project. I have no doubt he'd be willing to try and test the Epic (if he hasn't already), and he'd use it just like any other camera if he felt it was the best tool for the project he needs it for.

The Red camera has come a long way and to force every other manufacturer to 'up their game' is no mean feat. There is no question that both the Red camera and the Alexa are capable of producing images of the highest quality

Best shot films in 2010? 2 films comes to my mind instantly, which are Shutter Island (35mm) and Black Swan (16mm). I also enjoyed Inception. I haven't seen True Grit and 127 hours....

In terms of digital I really liked Predators. That was a Genesis project...

Book of Eli

Does Tron count? Yes, it was digital but it was also shot in a volume with mocap cameras with shots being chosen in post...

District 9 in terms of overall cinematography.

Are you only limiting it to features? What about TV? Lots of great digital cinematography there...

District 9 was 2009

Tron definitely does count... but it was shot live action in 3D.

The volume mocap was on Bridges for the younger versions of himself and Clu. Everything else was live action. (Well except for the obvious and plentiful CG.)

I have to join the crowd and say The Social Network. David Fincher & Jeff Cronenweth really Wow'ed me with their work on that film and I can't wait for the Bluray next week to really scrutinize the image!

Favorite cinematography of the year for me were- Shutter Island, Black Swan and Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World.

I know Antichrist was 2009, but I feel it's worth a mention.

Quite disturbing visuals at times, but some of the best.

Especially the prologue shot on Phantom.
