  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

What is the difference between an Epic-M and an Epic-X?

This is getting confusing. There is now an Epic-L (the once and future Scarlet), an Epic-M and an Epic-X. What's the difference between them?

Stephen

From What I understand.

L = EPIC light
M = MACHINED EPIC (limited production higher priced)
X = The Stage 2 and three EPIC's that will ship.

David

Epic-M's and Epic-X's are essentially the same camera.

However, the machined Epics are available for order now (at a premium price, $58,000, limited supply). these are pre-production models that are hand assembled at RED. This is what Mark from Offhollywood is shooting with. They are machined aluminum, rather than cast, hence the name.

The Epic Light is referred to as Epic-S, which designates it's original name. Nobody really wanted to call it Epic Light. We're still waiting for more details.

Okay. . . thanks for the clarification on this.

Are the specifications of Epic-S out yet? That is, do we know the maximum frame rate and whether it will have the ultra high dynamic range features of X?

Lastly, I did not take advantage of Stage 2, as I can't afford to own two cameras. As far as I know there has been nothing to come out about Stage 3 (trade in your RED One) yet, right?

Thanks.

Stephen

all cameras (after R1-MX) have HDRx™ and eHDR™ capabilities.

we don't really know very much about Epic-S, except that specs will be improved from the proposed S35 model.

not sure we have any more details on stage 3 either.

i assume the information is forthcoming.

Is there any chance that the engineering wizards at RED will find a way to add HDR capabilities to our M-Xed RED Ones? I really don't care about 5K versus 4K or lower compression ratios, but I really would love to get that extended dynamic range.

Jim recently said the R1 is missing hardware that would allow HDRx.

Yeah, but I wonder if they might have an M-X sort of add-on that would add the HDR mode to the camera. I'm one of the few who apparently doesn't object to the form-factor of the One.

Stephen

unfortunately, the chips in the R1 cannot handle the datastream needed for the HDR capabilities. It takes two simultaneous streams of footage, the new cameras have been designed specifically for it, and Scarlet even had to be updated to handle it. When the R1 was designed, there was no HDR, and it would take a whole new camera to handle it, so it would be kind of a backwards accomplishment.

now, it IS possible to get quite a lot out of the r3d, using post processing. think how much you can get from the flut and iso and exposure controls. there are techniques that work fairly well to combine different levels, though there are limitations, you can't generate image data when there's none: it can add noise in the shadows and your highlights will remain blown out.

Here is Jim's quote:

Shawn... again, the electronics are not capable of HDRx™™ in the RED ONE or RED ONE M-X. It has nothing to do with not wanting to develop more for the R1. HDRx™™ is a lot more than just double the frame rate.

Epic will have a ton of frame options so you can match to R1... and them some.

Nothing interesting to note really (except that Mark already owns an Epic M). Purchasing Epic M does not change any arrangements with an Epic X purchase.

Actually I do think it's interesting to note that even the "M" versions are called EPIC-X, and wasn't referring to the EPIC-X Stage packages at all.

it's probably just to avoid confusion down the road, because they are exactly the same (hardware and specs) but you can obviously tell the difference by sight. so like for rentals, you can just rent it as an epic-x without having to explain what an epic-m is.

It's worth remembering the original Stage 2's (also confusingly called Epic-X) were going to be slightly higher frame rate capable than the Stage 3's. Has this gone away?

Edit: My memory was off (thanks Bill for correction below).

Huh? I think the different stages only denoted differences in the delivery schedule and module packages, based on what you chose when given the options. I don't think there was ever to be a difference in the cameras themselves.

Huh????
Where did you see that?
I thought all Epic-X's where the same....

It was in the initial "stage" plan.

I think we can relay on that feature to have been subject to change...

It was more neccesary before all the majors joined ship officially... -:)
