  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

First Pic of Working Fixed Lens Red Scarlet

Now called Epic-L (for light)

actually, the latest is that it is called Epic-S, an indication of it's original name.

it is very confusing, there's still a lot of reference to all the different names, but Epic-S is the currently accepted vernacular.

and i called it the scarlet s35 to note that, if that camera had been made as we all knew it, it would probably be the same size as epic anyways. the 2/3 scarlets are the only ones that have the smaller sizes.

SSD Interchangeability

SSD Interchangeability

On the Scarlet video with Jarred and Tonaci, at around 1:12 it seems like they are saying that the Epic SSD side module will not fit on the Scarlet. Can anyone clarify that the same SSD side module will work with both cameras?

That's a good question. It does sound like clear confirmation that the SSD Side Module for the Epic won't fit the Scarlets. That does suggest that the only SSD Module for the Scarlet will be the rear one.

And, of course, just to be very clear, since the camera formerly known as the Scarlet S35 is now Epic-S (with appropriate and relevant design changes), the side module most likely WILL fit on that.

i thought there was an adaptor for the cf module, and an ssd module altogether...

From everything I have read, I think the adaptor is to allow CF cards to be used in the side SSD module - presumably to make the evolution to SSD a little more backward compatible. You slip the CF card into the adaptor and then slip tha adaptor into the SSD module.

Also, from what I remember, originally, there was an "adaptor" for the smaller Scarlet body, to make it compatible with all the modules that would otherwise fit the Epic. I don't think that would, in any way, be relevant to the side SSD Module.

Then again, maybe I misunderstood your question.:001_unsure:

Wow, I was taking the video and I miss heard that question. I thought Tonaci said the RED One side SSD module wouldn't fit but he actually says Epic. My guess is Jarred missheard just like I did, because up until now all of the DSMC modules were going to work on both Epic and Scarlet.

I asked Jarred if the Scarlet CF module would work on Epic and he said yes, just at higher compression ratios. If that is the case I don't see why the side SSD module wouldn't work on both.

Jarred?

You may be right (and I hope so) but I think the Scarlet body is a bit shorter so that may effect the fit of the side module.

Recording modules are all different between the 3 members of the family, Epic, Scarlet, and Red One. Scarlet body is shorter than the Epic so it takes its own unique Side SSD module.. all the rear modules and side handles though are swappable between both the Scarlet and Epic family.

Sorry, thought i posted this already It must of just been a dream :)

Thanks, Jarred. So I take it that means there WILL be a Scarlet SIDE SSD module; as well as rear SSD module for the Scarlet.

Absolutely... but the rear SSD module for Scarlet is the same one that is for the EPIC and you can interchange between both cameras.

You guys are quick. Thanks for the information. While I am currently more in the Scarlet price range I think a key for those looking to eventually move into the Epic line will be to invest in modules that can be shared between the different bodies. It's great to have the option.

Huh. So, does the rear module add significant length and/or weight to the body vs. the width and/or weight added by the side module or something? I’m just trying to figure out why one would go with the side module if the rear is swappable amongst the other camera models, since that is one of the major attractions of the DSMC system. Not that I’m complaining about options, not in the least- just trying to wrap my head around it.

It adds length to the package. That can be a good thing or not depending on how/what you shoot. That's why we give options. I personally like it on the side to have the smallest/lightest rig possible as a base. The rear SSD module is slightly heavier. It is a close call either way...

Any ability to give expected prices for the side/rear SSD modules, Jim? Or will that come along with everything else, in the near future? You guys have been on a roll lately.

Our program has gone through quite a metamorphosis... sometimes exciting and sometimes unsettling.

With so many changes it is in everyone best interest to only announce final specs, packages and prices. We will as soon as we are done.

Sweet. That’s kind of what I was figuring. Having options is great! Love that you guys give ‘em to us!

I completely understand, Jim. No problems here. I suspect everyone will know all they want to soon enough.
