  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Hi All,

Just curious if there has been any announcement that I might have missed addressing the final package configuration of Scarlet and more specifically the battery issue.

It is my recollection that the original announced package deal was a (Fixed Lens) camera (body) brain, a redmote, battery, CF card side module and a 2.8" LCD monitor. Please correct me if I am wrong or have left out a detail.

At the time of the announcement that configuration was not able to hold a battery so they were trying to figure out what to do since that multi battery rear module is expensive and would also require a $300.00 adapter module.

Any word on this yet?

RED said they are still working out the final package and pricing for the fixed Scarlet package. They are still taking input as they are considering including the side handle in the Epic-X package for RED One owners instead of the I/O module based on our feedback.

I had speculated that the side handle might solve the issue at a premium in place of the redmote on the Scarlet. The additional $400-$500 might be a reasonable solution.

I'll try to keep my eyes open for an announcement on what they decide to do . I hope it is in recon. Sometimes difficult given the number of posts on the site.

I believe Jarred was talking about the Epic not the Scarlet. Last info announced on the Scarlet fixed bundle included the side handle.

Actually, you know, it was mentioned for EPIC but it was in the context of the Scarlet thread, so you may be right.

I don't recall the confirmation about the Scarlet bundle including the side handle (the Smart one?). As a matter of fact, several people (including me) have started threads asking for clarification about where the Scarlet battery would go... do you have a link for that?

Hi All,

So are there 2 side handles now? I had been under the impression that the side handle had controls like the redmote and room for a single battery. Is there one that has the controls and another that is just a grip with battery space? Where can i find the info on this?

I only check this site out for a few minutes each day or week to see how things are progressing.

Actually the "non-smart" handle is thinner and DOESN'T hafve room for a battery. It also has just a sweel and button or two, not the full compliment of controls nor LCD.

Last I remember, there was a side handle that featured pretty much all the controls you would need, including a number of user-assignable buttons, and a place for a battery. The side handle had been this way since I can recall.

There was also a bottom handle that featured only a couple of buttons and a wheel. It did not have a battery, and only served to provide an ergonomic solution for vertical shooting.

When did this change? Steven, can you link to a post or image showing the new side handle?
 
It hasn't changed. The side handle is similar to the Redmote in control functions plus has additional features like flash sync for stills and it has the single small battery housing.
What actually will be in the Scarlet base package at what price is still to be determined I think. Don't know if they will even bother with a CF card module anymore, likely will be SSD modules only with an adapter for CF.

That's what I thought.

From Tonaci Tran's video, it sounds like the CF reader will remain an option (in addition to SSD) for Scarlet users, due to the 3K filesize.
 
Is anyone actually going to get a camera with a fixed lens? I feel like its such a problem since movies are shot on lots of lenses. . .
 
I think there are plenty of people that will pick them up for documentary, event/wedding/corporate, and for b-camera/special unit.

Well you can buy the fixed lens brain for much less than a comparable aftermarket servo zoom lens would cost you for the interchangeable version. In fact you could buy both brains, interchangeable for primes and fixed for run and gun zoom work or full wireless remote robotic control for use on cranes or jib arms. This is not a consumer grade fixed lens camera.
 
the lens covers a broad range, is fairly fast and holds it's f stop through the full Zoom (I believe). that is a good lens the reason most don't want a fixed lens camera is because even with prosumer camera the lens is almost always one of the biggest bottlenecks due to speed quality and range covered, in this case it's the opposite, Jim has said this lens could easily be worth the cost of the whole camera itself. Now a lot of this still remains to be seen when it is fully tested and ran through paces by the public but I have a feeling that the fixed will be a very versatile camera.

to be honest I wanted to go interchangeable then S35 but now I think I'm going fixed then interchangeable, the fixed is just to good of a deal, and for a lot of what I shoot I'm on my own at this point so the ease of having one lens that covers a wide range with fully electronic controls beats out the interchangeable for now. Who knows though I'm still in between them, do I need more fast wides, or an awesome fast zoom, the thing for me is I would have a tough time finding an equivalent zoom to the one on the fixed with range and the features it will have being attached to the brain.

Heck yeah! I couldn't afford to buy all the lenses to go with the Interchangeable system. True pros are probably going to go Epic... My understanding of the vision of Scarlet was to get a professional camera with huge versatility out for the most affordable price possible. Fixed does that. Reading through the forums, you'll see TONS of people that are very very interested in Scarlet 8X.
 
I am very interested because I am poor but I'm still learning if its a good choice for me.

I have seen Battle tested item in the Red store, I was thinking, that if i do get the 8x and then later upgrade, can i sell it back to red and get a discount on the s35 or epic?
 
I don't think RED has announced such a program...

The RED system allows modularity, which is great for everyone. Personally, I like the fact that if someone wants to get started with a Scarlet brain, they can. After a while, after working and setting a bit aside, they can either sell the Scarlet and purchase an S35 brain, or keep the Scarlet and have both. Want to do some traditional cinema-style shooting? Use the S35. Want to do a little run-and-gun or an easy steadicam setup? Use the 2/3" with AF. Keep all the modules from one and use them with the other - no need to buy a whole new data recorder, audio system, EVF, etc just because you want to upgrade the sensor.

Modularity = Adaptability
 
So when you are shooting, would it be best to split it up on CF cards or buy the SSD Module?
How long of 3k will fit on the CF cards anyways?

Also everyone is talking about the 2.8" lcd? i haven't seen that yet, the 5" that was on the recently released pictures and video looks like a wonderful setup, well with maybe another handle. . .
