  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Let's face it, until recently, you really needed to be in the loop to even be aware that RED Digital Cinema existed.

However, for the past few weeks, I've noticed RED pop up all over the place.

Two articles on IGN (one of which mentions REDuser):

I also saw a special feature on the Gadget Show (a TV program over here in the UK), and you'll have to take my word for it when I tell you RED has made a few appearances on BBC news as well.

Looks like RED is set to become a household name, just like Sony, Apple, Panasonic, JVC etc.
 
Here's a pretty flattering quote from that article about Spiderman 4:

"if Jim [Jannard, the owner and founder of Red] and the crew hadn't made these cameras available to us I don't think we could have shot this movie the way our director envisioned it in 3D"

Panavision is a household name so...

I can tell you Red is a pretty familiar name in THIS household. :-)
 
I don't think RED will go public soon, and I think that it might seriously affect how they like to do things.
 
Ye gods, I certainly hope Mr. Jannard does not make that mistake. Companies tend to change overnight when they go public. Suddenly, it's not the customer they need to keep happy but the stockholders. And stockholders don't give a flying f*** about quality, customer satisfaction, support or anything else besides how their stock is doing. There are times when I'm convinced the biggest mistake humankind ever made was the invention of the stockmarket.

That statement has the potential to take this thread into a rage.


Just hit rewind a minute and understand that even things like the RED camera would not really be possible without modern economics.

There are tradeoffs to everything, there is good and bad, yin and yang. Every invention has it's purpose and can fuel other invention.

I think you misunderstand what I mean by public. I meant, RED becoming well known, not RED selling stocks.

This is a pretty dangerous mix-up. While I appreciate the value of the stock market, what I love about RED is that it's a privately owned company, and as a result, does not aim to please it's shareholders, but it's customers.

Unfortunately, companies like Apple and Sony have those shareholders to answer to with every move they make.
 
Maybe a title like "Red getting publicity" would have been less confusing. I too took the title to suggest RED was becoming a Public traded company and was likewise a little concerned.

Just wrapped a student short this weekend that shot super35 on a Panavision Gold.

It was my first time working with a PV camera, and it was absolutely awesome. A great experience.

On topic:

At least The Hobbit and Spiderman are shooting 3D and not doing post conversion. With the designs of the 3D rigs changing, 3D is going to end up taking nowhere near as long as it did with films as recent as Avatar. The Kernercam rig has the fastest and easiest setup out of all the rigs I've seen, and that's 9 minutes.

Done at no extra charge.

RED wouldn't be RED if they'd have to answer to stock holders. That said - I would buy stock in a heartbeat, but I prefer an EPIC.
 
I can see the day coming when I don't have to search for ways to make the uninformed understand what RED cameras can do. I had a banker ask me once "Can it work with TV?" I immediately said "yes, it can substitute for cameras being used in television." before realizing he was talking about showing home movies.
 
I spent my high school life raving about RED...Only to be answered by blank faces saying: RED Digital who?

Last night, an old friend e-mailed me saying, I quote:

Dude, I saw one of those RED thingies on TV last night...man those things are awesome!
 
Haha, hopefully, one day we'll being seeing RED billboards etc.

Haha, I think we're using a pretty loose definition of "household name" to include panavision. :D
 
I am guessing that RED will be the golden standard for decades to come. As long as Jim stays away from Fiji :)
