  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EPIC-M...

Will I be able to buy an Epic Lite and upgrade it later to a regular Epic?

Because 2 years ago, you had to buy into one of the two systems, you could swap sensors/brains within the system, but you could not change a Scarlet into an Epic.

My apologies, I misunderstood.

You always could swap an Epic brain in to a Scarlet DSMC system or vice versa. The modules for Scarlet and Epic are exactly the same. You can even put an Epic brain in with your fixed Scarlet system and all of the accessories will work (minus the lens of course).

You can upgrade your camera by buying a new brain... if you want to sell your old brain I'd bet there is a pretty good market for it.

Jim

Thanks for the prompt answer. Any word on mounts? I am particulalrly interested in OCT19 and BNCR mounts for the EPIC family. Thanks, Mike

Justin: I totally disagree. That is exactly what RED said you could do. I have been planning for almost two years now to buy the S35 Scarlet and upgrade to the Monstro Scarlet when that sensor became available.

Michael - I have to totally agree with Justin. Nowhere that I know of was it ever said, or even implied, that you could trade out the sensor within the "brain." I think the chance to upgrade the RED ONE to an MX sensor was a bit of a surprise and not any sort of precedent. The idea of "modularity" was that you could continue to use your old accessories when you upgraded to a new "brain."

Oops - looks like Jim popped in with an answer. I'll go back to sleep now.

Yeah this is why the difference between "sensor" and "brain" isn't just semantics. In the case of RED they mean two very different things.

...brain/sensor, whatever. I am not interested in the precise wording...you had to buy into one of the two systems, you could swap sensors/brains within the system, but you could not change a Scarlet into an Epic.

Scarlet and Epic ARE brains. Just brains. (except the Fixed which also has a lens)

Everything else is separate and compatible with both/all brains.

Even the kits like Epic-X or Scarlet Fixed (again, except the lens) are just bundle discounts, you could take the included modules off and resell them if you wanted.

Sure, that was/is the beauty of the system. We hope to be inside the Epic-S program as we were in cue for the Scarlet S35 for both units we'd rather need than the Scarlet 2/3" model (already out of our plans putting the things in a realistic budget) in order to comply the 3D route. It will just depend on the price announcement we (me and my partners) are anxiously waiting, though :-)

OK, I see now that I have been operating under a fundamental misconception. I went back to the original announcement from 2 years ago: http://reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=22547

I was under the impression that the parts that could be changed were inside the shiny black boxes and, because the EPIC had a bigger box to begin with, its internal parts would not physically fit inside the Scarlet box. In other words, I thought there was a card inside that could be pulled out and swapped within a family, but not between the two families). I blame it on my Maker/Hacker/DIY background. I can now see that the brain/sensor is the entire shiny black box, not just some of the internal parts.

Now Jim's message makes sense. You don't "upgrade" by paying for the difference between a $7,000 S35 Scarlet and the $10,000 FF Scarlet; you have to buy the $7,000 S35 Scarlet, then buy the $10,000 FF Scarlet, and perhaps sell the S35 Scarlet on the secondary market (most probably for less than $7,000). I had thought there was a $3,000 brain/sensor card that you could buy. That was obviously a misconseption.

Message received. Thanks.

Now, about those 3rd party mounts......

You're welcome Michael, as always, sharing the same love for russian glass :-)

Any 3rd party can make mounts for the system...

jim, do you still get a special feeling every time you pick up your epic? or has it worn off by now?

Hi Mark

I don't think you've missed anything but you should have received an email from RED entitled "Confirmation of Interest: EPIC-M"

If you didn't receive this I'd make sure that you've got her correct address and try again.

Good luck!

Jim,

May I ask about the sensor adjustment and back focus.

Is the way you are doing that on these bodies pretty much set now in the epic system?

No shimming of PL mounts? Only lenses will need to be shimmed?

David

no news... no more toughts?
am I missing something?
best,

I'm still hoping we will be in The Epic-M group.
To stay competitive in our region we have had to invest in a few new 1080p cameras...around $400.000.

The Red One is still going strong after almost 3 years of being in the market, but demand for said 1080p camera is raising every day.

I hope RED Will be able to fill demand for The EPIC M so there will again be a great alternative to The other suppliers.

I'm confused, RED ONE has far greater than 1080P resolution, so why don't you simply buy RED ONEs instead of the aforementioned 1080P cameras?

You definitely don't need a $58k EPIC M to output 1080P - plain old RED ONE will do just fine.

D

I am wondering myself too...
