  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RedCineX will not render or diplay corrupt frames

Hi,

Is it normal that RedCineX suppresses corrupt frames? I'm currently dealing with a mag that systematically crashes RCX above 262 when I load a clip into the viewer. Rendering the clip results in a black video being output, and playing the file in RCX262 results in the picture freezing as soon as I hit a corrupt frame.

I really miss the ability of RedAlert to display garbage. No error message and no visual cues makes it very hard to spot corrupt footage.

Could you guys include a "force render of corrupt frames" or "Don't suppress corrupt frames" option in RedLine and RCX?

Anyway, my real problem is that I'm trying to render the clips with the corrupt frames so we can cut around them (there's quite a few of them, corrupt frames that is). RCX is pretty much useless here, and while RedAlert will play back and render the files fine, with the much wanted garbage, it doesn't do so with the right Color Science, which is quite problematic as the footage was shot on stage under tungsten light and I can't replicate the look. Can anyone offer any alternative?

Thanks a lot.

Kick back to Rocketcine-X if you have a Rocket.

Worked very well for these situations...

(really was a stable well performing little app...)

You need to downgrade your Rocket firmware to make that work BTW, but that's pretty straightforeward.

I'm very unfortunately Rocketless. :( Any software only solution. (But I'll look around to see if I can bum one of my colleagues' Rocket.)

Unfortunately there is no way to recover from a some corrupt frames at this time. In RCX, you can choose to generate a script that will basically run REDLine on every single frame. This can help you determine which frames are corrupt. You will want to enable "Frame Only Mode" and check "Generate REDLine Batch Script" in your export preset settings.

Thank you very much David. That did it.

While I wasn't able to run the generated script. Just checking the software only and frame only modes did it for me.

The render speed is dreadful, but I'm generating a TIFF sequence which I'll convert to ProRes afterwards. The corrupted frames come out as expected, in the proper colour science. Yay!

Thanks again!

This is somewhat unrelated, but could it be possible for RCX to display a small marker over the clip in the bin or browser window if the clip has dropped frames? The same would be great for corrupt frames, but I guess that would be a little harder to do.

Just a suggestion...
I scrubb every clip in clipfinder and it shows dropframes/corrupt frames as a completely grey frame. Its easy to spot even when scrubbing. Then I go to RCX and scrub to that point and and watch the timecode as I advance frame by frame. If there are drop frames that RCX is not showing there are missing frames in the time code and you'll see it jump that number of frames....but it does not seem to display the black frames like in the past.

I wish that RCX had the old RED indicator for dropframes that it had way back in the first pre X versions. Sometimes that's how I will find them, by going back to the old redcine and playing suspect clips to find the bad section.
