  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Jim, did you really think you were NOT going to get this response? Good idea on the package EPIC-M (names not going anywhere)...I hope that my production EPIC-x will stand up against this machined beast. I know we all have experienced the quality variations from different manufactures over the years, so I am can only asume you have selected the best of the best.

Maybe you should make the machined EPIC-Ms out of something sexier, like titanium.

We could machine them out of titanium... package price goes to $78K. :-)

Jim

anyone remember that canon 5dm2 ad with the word M and epic?
kinda ironic now

im in. Ill take me a titanium body!

found it. An Epic begins with an M, that's just waaay to funny

Jim, other than prestige/exclusivity, coolness and getting the product a little early ... are there any other advantages of getting this machined version?

You are great marketers -- but I think there are a % of people who don't fully even understand what the benefits of something being machined versus produced in a more mass way.

I think one of the coolest things about this will be just seeing one of these badboys in production and seeing actual footage ;-)

Jim, now you have me figuring out how to have an EpicM and my EpicX :-)

Ah!!! So cool!

I could hardly believe that was an official Canon ad when it came out.
EPIC written in RED letters...
Too perfect not to be a joke.

What was that marketing department thinking?

There is absolutely no advantage whatsoever to this package over a production EPIC... except timing. That is why I am surprised at the response. I guess some people can make back their money in 2 months. That would explain it. Or the fact that you have something that is next to impossible to own. I want one. But I didn't think there are others like me.

No marketing effort here. We'll save that for production EPICs... which will turn the industry upside down, inside out and backwards.

Jim

I'm sure these will be collector's items one day, like an early sample of any other technological breaktrough.

Or think of owning an early piece of art from a later superstar…

Production cameras will be cast aluminum bodies... just like a RED ONE. Tooling is being prepared now. Machined bodies will be made from billet aluminum.
Ouch, that's extremely disappointing news. :( It is great as always that you're giving the customer options, but it was communicated at "Red Day" this year that all of the Epics would be machined; that was one of the quality differences between the Epic and Scarlet bodies that the extra $20k got you. Oh well... I know, I know... "things change... count on it!"

I thought about it and this is actually a pretty awesome deal. More options = more choice. I was unaware that you guys scrapped the Tattoo program so was basing my initial reaction on that and how it equates to Stage II release times.. Thanks for answering my questions Jim & happy tryptophan day

Looks like Recon is active tonight... 900+ viewers at 11:20pm. I wish I had something important to say. :-)

2:25 here.

I woke up in the middle of the night from my post-turkey stupor, check the thread I started and saw there were 80 posts, half a dozen from Jim, and thread closed. (no problem, makes sense for those announcements to be moved over here.)

Before I go back to sleep, just wanted to thank you for clarifying the option and the expected schedule.

Also wanted to thank Jay, Johnny and a few others for supporting me - not so much my opinions - but just affirming to the group that I'm a RED early adopter/supporter and that if I say something that is uncomfortable I mean well and I try to be thoughtful, reasonable and respectful.

Please remember that my post was made before we had any real information and I was trying to bring up concerns both for myself and the group as a whole.

Jim, I made a comment in there about fairness that may have been a bit strong. I couldn't help but feel there was something unfair about it to the stage 2 people. But I can't really articulate it, so it is probably more emotional than rational. Consider that in over 25 years of buying multiple video cameras every year I've NEVER been emotional about a camera. You should probably take it as a compliment that I'm emotional about yours.

As far as this deal, I can see that there are too many good things to be learned not to do it. And as I said in my post, I'm considering it myself.

I have a CNC/machine shop and I'm pretty good with my hands - what's my price on a "Heathkit"-style Redkit version? :-)

PS: but I need the pre-soldered version - my soldering sucks!
