Originally I hoped to be spending around $10k for a full rig based around the 2/3" fixed... Now it's looking more like at least $12k and I feel like I'm still missing a lot. :mad2: What do you think a full rig should consist of (not including audio gear) and what do you think it would cost? I'd like to stay as close to $10k as possible, since money is kind of tight...

I was thinking:
Scarlet 2/3" Fixed
ssd module/reader
battery module
shoulder mount system (the camera by itself doesn't seem to ergonomic..)
mattebox/filters (never had one before, but I have been in plenty of situations where I would have killed for a polarizer or hot mirror or flags)
storage cases

Also, any manufacturer suggestions on shoulder mounts, matteboxes and filters? And what are the bare essentials that I would definitely need? I know it's a lot of questions, but I really appreciate it! This is going to be the first rig I'll actually own outright (instead of borrowing or renting) so please excuse me if I'm asking dumb questions, I just don't want to miss anything. Thanks!!!

Right there with you. This will be one of the first real camera systems I'll actually "own" and very much looking forward to it, wondering what all will be needed as this will be my first outing with RED...still can't decide between fixed or interchangeable though...

I am also in the same boat. This will be the first camera that I "own." I have family members that own 5D's, friends that own HVX's, and I'm getting tired of borrowing for shoots.

still can't decide between fixed or interchangeable though...

I think I'm going to go interchangeable, solely because I would like the option in the future to change lenses without having to use another adapter.

Hi Alexander,
I think you mentioned the most important gear to get.
But for me, there would be other stuff you should need... In my case, these are important/helpful:
A good viewfinder (redrock's EVF shipping early 2011, 545$ if I'm not wrong).
A heavy tripod (under 600$ is the Benro pro video tripod, big fat stable and trustworthy. I don't remember the exact name of the model but they only have one of this type).
A dc 100W lamp

For matteboxes, I'll go Redrock, for shoulder mount too... or Varizoom. I have a varizoom slightly modified and I'm really happy with it.
But if you want to get cheaper solutions, Proaim seem to be interresting.
One of my friends who is pro photo and video dealer bought them a few things to see the built quality, and for the price it's no steal !

I'm sure other people will add their preferences sothat you could make your opinion.

Peace,
Franck

...under 600$ is the Benro pro video tripod...

I wouldn't go for a Benro in this case. When you're talking about $12k+ of equipment, I would pay the extra $500-$800 and spring for a nice Cartoni, OConner, or Sachtler that can hold a bigger payload (unless you just have money sitting around to replace the rig if something went wrong).

As far as filters go, I would go with Tiffen. They have a ton and will most likely have what you're looking for, for almost any kind of shoot.

The Benro KH58 can be loaded up to 12kg. I used it this year with a pmw320 wich is Half of the weight and it was a great friend at this moment. Benro's built quality is often underestimated, but I guess Chris is right prefering Sachtler, they made their name on their high quality products.

I can't find the price list anymore... but this is what I am after:

2/3" fixed with bundle (5" monitor upgrade)
SSD side
2 x 64gb SSD
SSD base
Side Handle
2 x extra battery
RedRock EVF + mattebox

I'm hoping to get that all for $12k (maybe less if SSD comes down).

Then I will add s35 further down the line.

Maybe you have plenty of experience with equipment but there are a number of things I bought that I never use, and that's most of Red one's production pack, for instance. i would advise anyone to try to get their hands on the things they're thinking of buying when they're available, before actually buying.

Red has said they will bundle things into some production packs so
you will be able to save some money over just buying everything on
an individual basis. However as above quote shows..you need to be
sure you will need and use everything otherwise it's not a bargain.

A couple of tidbits of information...

it has been widely thought that the fixed will precede the interchangeable, so waiting for that may mean waiting even longer, just FWIW.

Also, at one point (a million years ago?) RED showed a picture and a model of it's own mattebox. I believe it was carbon fiber and, if I remember correctly, it was said it would cost around $1200 - not too bad compared to some RED prices on accessories. Of course, it may not be here when the cameras are released (or ever?) as all things are subject to change.

I love my Libec LS-55 tripod and would urge anyone to look at Libec for an affordable unit.

Just my two cents.

anyone interested in an ls70? I'm selling mine once stage 3 of epic comes through

the planned release was EPIC, then scarlet 2/3" fixed shortly after, then 2/3" cinema after that, then S35 scarlet. don't think there has been any indication that things have changed, but who knows.

Everything is subject to change...

They better change.

RED should realize that the big guys have moved faster than they predicted and we're now entering affordable S35 realm as we speak.

The rest of the affordable entries are still just long GOP HD video cameras though. They will find their own markets I am sure, especially for those that are more comfortable with traditional video production styles and work flows.
At this point Red is still the only company producing reasonable cost high resolution digital cinema cameras that exceed the limits of what any HD format camera can offer at any price in most if not all respects.

To be fair... 4:4:4, uncompressed s-log (or, at worst, 4:2:2) is not long GOP and alot of people seem to care about s35 rather than high resolution.... and, of course, availability.

That said... I think RED should stick with their current road plan. Get Epic and fixed Scarlet out and the pressure is off... then move onto the 2/3" cinema and s35.

They also have to make 100% sure they can meet demand (especially accessories).

Now with Sony entering the market , Alexa already being here, I have changed my opinion as well.

The only reason I can see , being worth to release a 2/3" sensor is for the use of affordable an easy to carry 3d rigs. No other use than that!!!

Therefore , and even against the profit off all future Epic owners, I can't see any reason to wait for the S35 Scarlet. Because otherwise Sony will eat up the market , because they must have reasons to enter with a 15K system rather than a fully professional one at let's say 25k-40K to kill Alexa.

I'm not sure I agree with you, but I'm sure at lot of people are. S35 dof in full HD at an affordable pricerange is probably what a lot of people are seeking. However, I had a thought last night, which might be crazy I don't know? But if all cameras eventually will become S35, FF or 4/3" size, 2/3" (good looking 2/3") might become more popular due to it's large dof.

Affordable S35..yes. But it's still quite a substantial investment.

So while I could see corporate video companies maybe jumping in and buying
right off. It would seem that most individuals would be more inclined
to let the dust settle and buy whatever camera best suits them.
Whether that is S35 or 2/3 or FF.
