  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

red one start up

its about efficiency. sure i could sit there for 90 seconds twiddling my thumbs.. but id rather have the shot framed and focused ready to go, so that when 90 seconds is up. we can get a shot off.. in the fast past world of real production... time is money.. and you dont want to have to explain to the clients and producers why they are staring at a big logo rather than the scene during a reboot

I would also appreciate, if this boot sequence was streamlined, and redesigned to be less obstructive.
Actually there are two annoying aspects: The boot sequence and the formatting screen.
Especially formatting the 640 GB reddrives is a pain to do in-camera, because the whole screen is obstructed and it takes quite a bit of time.

The time spent changing batteries, restarting the camera because of a crash and formatting reddrives, could be utilized almost in every case to do a rehearsal, or fine tuning your framing etc.

Especially with the competition from the Alexa, our rental customers are getting used to swift SXS formatting and 15 sec bootups.
Shooting tests side by side gives a vast advantage to the competition, so why not adapt and make the waiting experience as productive as possible.

A single line status bar in the bottom of the display within the HD-SDI scan would be preferable.

Hope it is possible to implement this late in the life of the RED ONE....

One more vote for sizing down the logo on startup, or moving it away.
Keeping the live view when formatting would be a big big help.

thanks
Manuel

I have a Switronix plate and like it very much - but it's not that effective on my current job which is a run and gun documentary, where mobility counts and that 90 second start time can be a real killer. Primarily able to use the Switronix on some of the timelapse cinematography and for shots where I have to stay booted up and waiting on the action. But it's really not great for hand-held footage or when I'm running around trying to catch fast set-ups.

Down-sizing the logo would be a big help - as someone said, the old Mysterium logo made it much easier to make use of the passing time. I found the new logo's screen-eating size quite frustrating on this job.

It is very important to the client that the footage be future-proofed, for a variety of sound reasons. In a lot of ways, RED isn't the optimum choice for the job, but future-proofing trumps many of the weight, mobility, and start-up time disadvantages.

In every other way, the RED has performed like a champ - very reliable in all kinds of weather. Loving the footage, and I'm shooting in a range of very challenging lighting environments.

+1 for the removal of the logo on format. or make it small and in the corner. Same with the formatting screen. make it a small progress bar like when downloading something on the internet.
The camera IS awesome, but this would be awesomER.
Thanks.

Another vote for removing the logo on bootup and for the formatting media messages not to take up the entire screen/viewfinder.

By the way, I couldn't find any info on this, no doubt it's there somewhere, but are there any time differences in RED One vs. RED MX boot time?

I get "X" jokes from clients every once in a while. And there is always someone somewhere on set who will make a comment when a reboot is needed.
Minor annoyance, but it could be avoided by losing the giant logo...
