In order to save folks some time wading through the mountains of "yeehaw" in the

EPIC..READY RECON THREAD.

Here is the summary text of what the people who matter said.

IN future it would be nice if other users could do this too.

EPIC… READY.

EPIC was officially declared ready for production today. We have prototypes that pass all the requirements we set out the past few months. That means we will finish the Tattoo program and put Tattoos on special jobs and begin ordering all the parts and pieces (over 18,000) to begin production. It will take a bit of time to set up the line and gather all we need, but the end is in sight.

Just to be clear, not every feature is currently enabled, but the most important ones are and the build seems very stable as a foundation. We expect 95% of the features to be ready by the time production EPICs are released.

This is a pretty big day.

Jim

I have said this before... if this was easy, the other guys would have already done it.

EPIC is a nuclear generator in a matchbox. It is the single most difficult project I have ever seen, worked on or imagined. Think about it just for a minute... what else does 5K at 120fps, variable RAW (REDCODE) and records to an SSD with ramping, HDR (with magic motion), a full 1080P or 2K direct output via HDSDI, wireless control, modular, FLUT, non-destructive LUTs, and a hundred other features in the body the size of a Hasselblad? What else does any of this? It is no wonder we are late. It is a miracle we actually did it. Truly a miracle.

Jim

All this week Jarred, Deanan and I were testing EPIC until 4am EVERY night at the RED Studios. And we weren't alone. We had our ace, crack, number one firmware god with us updating and fixing issues we were finding during our testing. It really was unreal. It is something I will never forget. It was all about getting it done and getting it right. Every piece of us was invested in the process. I had to wonder how many of our competitors were up? How many cared as much as we did... how many really were as dedicated to ushering in the future as we were.

We love what we are doing... truly.

mmm.. we could of used that. Sleep was such a nuisance for us this last week.

I gotta admit though.. it was so exciting we didn't even get tired. If it wasnt for a daily morning meetings we needed to be awake for everyday, we likely would of blew way past 4am every night until we fell over.

Right now... the ones we have do 5K at 120fps (2.40:1) and 96 fps at full frame or 2:1. It does REDCODE 3:1 to 25:1 on the RED SSD... and syncs at 23.98, 24, 47.96 and 48 fps. Timecode works. Audio does not (yet). REDCINE-X has EPIC support (internal build).

It is ready for productions... and there will be announcements pretty soon about some big ones that will be shot on EPIC.

Jim

BTW... OffHollywood is scheduled to get the 1st shipping EPIC. I am quite sure they will let you know when they receive it and what their reaction is...

Tattoo (+13) will not be for sale. These will go on selected projects while production EPICs are being staged to be built. We need to watch over the Tattoo +13's carefully.

OffHollywood, and everyone else, will get the same Stage 2 production EPICs.

I think we talk too much to get an Oscar... :-) Doesn't matter. If our customers are happy, that's good enough for us.

So since Offhollywood is #5/6 and I'm #27, maybe I can expect mine on the same night he gets his? :-)

Shawn... you definitely are one of the 1st. :-)

There were 2 great things that I saw happen this week.

The first you just read about.

The second was witnessing just how strong our team has become over the last 3 years. We have always been able to move mountains, but now we are moving them in days instead of months. This week we had a pretty long list of incredibly difficult items on the todo list.. and each and every one of them were scratched out by the end of the day today.

Many of you have heard Jim say that we have learned just enough to be dangerous.. those words have never been so true.

Look out.

JIM
I expect that this will be a highly read post. Given that... I'd like to go on record that there are many faithful and dedicated people at RED that have worked tirelessly on this project and everyone needs to know how much effort they have put forth. If we ever earn respect in the industry for this work, many are responsible. There are many whose names people will never be heard. Many who have joined the fight because the challenge was worthy. My hat is off to the RED Army... every one.

Jim

There is still a lot of work ahead for us... but the industry is officially on notice. :-)

Jim

We have been up so many days in a row until 4am that it is hard to go to sleep at a reasonable hour now... and too excited.

BIG JOHN SAGUD

I've never been so proud to be associated with any company, business or individuals as I have been to be a part of the RED team. What Jim, Jarred, Deanan, and the engineers have accomplished is nothing short of miraculous. This is a milestone, one that the industry will remember for decades to come. What EPIC represents is something that none of us can fully realize at this moment, but we all know that we are a part of history. This moment is all the richer because it is one shared with an amazing community, one that has had much to do with the final outcome. The effort continues and will never ebb because we are as passionate about the product, each and every employee at RED, as we can possibly be. Today, Jim addessed the team at RED, from the accountants to the warehouse employees to the customer service reps to the IT team to the engineers, each and every contributor along this incredible journey, and the message was one of congratulations for a job well done. We have only begun, and the impact of Jim's vision and the revolution that EPIC represents will change, forever, the way that movies are made. This is a great day.

Just curious. Thanks.

Everything that is required to to use the EPIC will be shipping with the camera. Some of the modules and other accessories will follow behind.

What was to overcome?

Even the first Epic prototypes did everything the Alexa does now.. The Alexa is basically an 1080p HD-SDI camera head... Prores recording? An Epic with a HD-SDI nano recorder is still 1/3rd the weight and 1/3rd the size...

The supposed latitude advantage? someone confirmed that is from the use of a ultracon filter over the sensor ( which also is a reason the Alexa looks so soft ) and thats before you even turn HDRx™™™™™™™ on.

People can put the Alexa and the Red One in the same sentence, but the Epic is truly in a whole different league.

Love Arri, and the Alexa is a great camera, but i promise you the Alexa didn't slow us down one bit :) The only difference is they ended up shipping a non-complete beta camera and we didn't.

thanks for the summary, very well done!!

I wish there was a way the forum could do this automatically. But thanks!! Totally awesome.

Those links work just fine for me. I use them all the time. I guess what I meant was that it'd separate them out by thread. But yes, reading their posts consolidated is also just fine.

Thanks guys.

I know everyone wants to congratulate Jim and team for working hard but if I took the "backslapping out of the thread then it would be more managable to get the information that RED is trying to provide us.

I also use the links to check things that way, but RECON gets about an average of 4-5000% percent more views than anything else on the site.

I get excited about the news too, but all the yeehaw makes it hard to decipher the information.

wasted thread space....

wasted thread space....

I sort by 40 posts per page. This is what the first page of responses looks like......

-Terrific, Jim. I can't afford the Epic, BUT I know the Scarlet isn't/can't be too far behind. Thank you!

-Excellent news. Congrats!

-Woohoo

-Congratulations on the milestone. It must feel great. I'm looking forward to the test footage.

-Yes!! Congratulations! Sooner and later than I expected...

-Wow. This is exciting.

-I am as unfamiliar to camera production as you can get.
So, .... could you translate that information into man-weeks? Months? Days?

-I would think you meant to say this is a freaking HUGE day.

-And this means it's a very good day for everyone. Congratulations to you all at RED for the great work. You are making dreams come true.

-congrats. can't wait to see more from epic. Scarlet next!

-awesome! this is VERY good news!

-Been moping about the XServe being discontinued all day today, so this was much needed good news!

-Congratulations! Now ship! ship! ship!

-Jim and team, thank you for all of your hard work. This is a huge milestone!

-Great news! Quite the journey.

-One homerun, Epic up to bat, Scarlet on deck

-AWESOME!!!!!!!!

For days I've been wondering what Jim has been up to, since other than
the new Red Cine builds, there hasn't been a real Recon post in weeks.

This is sooooooooooooooo exciting. Can't wait for Stage 3 to come! :-)

Congrats on all the hard work guys.

-Too bad you didn't wait till later in the week.

10 10 1010

has a certain ring to it.

-Joy of joys. Cant wait for footage!

-Can't afford the Epic, but knowing that the Scarlet can't be too far behind I am just so exciiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiited now. Rock on, Jim and Red

-now its ACTION Time

-Thanks J
95% will work 4 me

-http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3GwjfUFyY6M says it all.

-Awesome news. One step closer.

I'm ready when you are.

I'm DPing a short film on R1MX on the nineteenth. It's kind of a character study piece dealing with family secretes. Micro budget, financed by the director. I'd be more than happy to take out one of your tattoos, and give you an honest and detailed report of how it did.

Just PM me. You should have my shipping address already.

-Come in here, dear boy, have a cigar.
You're gonna go far, fly high,
You're never gonna die, you're gonna make it if you try;they're gonna love you.

(No irony intended here...!)

WOW

-Pink, FTW!

-CONGRATS, all your hard work and constant dedication is about to finally pay off, can't wait to see it!

-Well, this will be a roller coaster weekend, emotionally speaking!

It is 1 year anniversary of the worst event.

But I will be shooting a Fly Fishing segment for the Squaw Valley doc on my R1-MX.

And now I find out my Epic-X/StgII is getting its bits & bobs ordered!

I am going to need to up my meds:)

Thank you to Jim & crew. An amazing ride that really just started!

-You did it! Well done Jim now go get some sleep!

-It almost had to be named Red ColorScience Fiction...

-It's wild by all standards, as RED has been from the startup.

And we're all enjoying the the ride!

-And then the day came, when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to Blossom.

Bloody Gold RTM Bitches :)

...And Thanks

Scarlet in the wake ?

-That's GREAT news! I start shooting a film with Red One MX in two weeks. So I'm assuming Epic won't be available by then?

-Congrats to Jim and everyone at Red! I'm not good at expressing excitement in type, but jumping up and down here at home! :D

-Thats beautiful news Mr. Jannard!
Congradulations!

-epic

Jay.

I'm as excited as everyone else. It doesn't bug me, it makes me smile too. But it does make it hard to get to the information / news the thread has to offer.

The side and rear SSD recording modules are available first.. in fact the Side SSD is the standard side module, we will not be making a side CF module for Epic. Don't worry though, there is an SSD adapter that turns CF cards into an SSD mag so you can still use all your CF cards in either the side SSD or read SSD modules.

And of course all RED monitoring options already work on EPIC.. the existing EVF, 5" and 7" LCDs as well as the new touchscreen monitors and of course the Bomb EVF. Plus 1080 HD-SDI and HDMI outputs on the brain.

JARRED
yes.. its how it will ship if you choose that option. Absolute minimum config would be a Brain, Side SSD and a Touchscreen monitor. (assuming you are powering from a battery belt or AC pack) Add a side handle for battery power and additional control, and/or a Redmote for icing on the cake and wireless control.

Tattoo +13's are complete. All the board mods and changes made to finish it now need to get ordered. Can't build production boards until development/changes are done. They are now.

Jim

Scarlet is just behind EPIC...

Jim

You are either going to buy nothing or an EPIC. If you are smart, you will be saving your pennies for an EPIC... IMHO. :-)

Jim

The brain is exactly what it was +13mm (about 1/2") in length.

Jim

Over 50,000 views of this post in a day... I guess most everyone has gotten the message. :-)
