  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

APPLE discontinues XSERVE

That's a shame - it was a nice server, but quite pricey...

The Mac Pro is pretty much server class (EEC ram, Xeon processors) anyway so it's not a massive deal, but they take up a lot more space... And no redundant power supply, which could be a problem.

To me this announcement only means that there is a high likelihood that a new, slim Mac Pro powerhouse is on the horizon that will make the XServe redundant.

Seems an odd move to me, The Mac Pro isn't the most rack friendly design and I figure if rack mounting wasn't important to you you would have bought a mac pro anyways.

There are some rack mount solutions (http://www.custom-consoles.com/Rackmount-Mac-g5.php for example), but it is really too large to, say, use in a datacentre. Perhaps the next generation Pro will have a slightly smaller case to make it more rack-mount friendly.. Also, an option for redundant power supplies and lights out management would be good... And maybe an option for integrated graphics or no graphics card so you're not wasting a lot of power running the higher power ones that come with the Pro...

I think the main reason they cut it though was that they just weren't selling enough...

Seems they announced a Mac Pro server system to replace Xserve:
http://www.macrumors.com/:
"One item of interest that was overlooked in this morning's news that Apple is discontinuing the Xserve is that the company has added a new standard configuration to its Mac Pro lineup. The new "Server" configuration offers an entry-level 2.8 GHz quad-core processor with 8 GB of RAM, two 1 TB hard drives, and Mac OS X Server for $2999."

Light Peak makes more sense for a relatively future proofed next gen data bus. Light Peak on your IPad 2 anyone?

I think the reason for discontinuing the XServe is the fact that only a very few bought it.

Hans

XServe was never something Apple really cared about. It was nice for small render farms because its easy to setup and manage but pretty much anyone who uses them has someone who is trained for the job.

Xserve G5s used to be a great deal money wise. People would buy them and install linux on them and run them as cheap 1u servers, because it was cheaper than getting a comparable server from Sun, IBM or HP.

However...

No Hot swap, redundant power supplies.
No Hot swap drives from dedicated bays that don't require pulling the server.

This is very bad news for me. First Apple pulled the rug from under us with the SAN, now with the servers.

The SAN is STILL not compatible with the new OS.

At least it's all been rock solid without a single failure for several years, but this is disheartening.

I'm exploring other options, but don't like any of them so far.

Good shooting and best regards,

Leo
