I was at RED Studios Hollywood today shooting the breeze with the guys, and Jim showed me some of the recent stuff he had shot with Ace.

These were non-HDR images, I have never seen anything like that before.

I am a friend of RED, but have never been a fanboy. I respect the hell out of what they do, but have always seen the images for what they are. I have to. My reputation as a good post guy depends on my honesty in what I see in imagery. Up until now, the race has been to redefine what a digital acquisition device can do. Epic changes that and starts to redefine the meaning of "acquisition device." It's a brave new world, folks...

I have seen film display similar sensitivity, but sure as hell not with that kind of noise floor. Wow. I just sat there staring at it for a few minutes before I snapped out of it.

I envy the people on this list who are professional shooters and will get to play with this incredible piece of gear.

Best,

Lucas

Thanks Lucas, it's always great to hear info from someone who has seen the footage first hand.

Part of the delay is getting the bugs out. Part is including HDRx. Part is the new sensor tweaking (same sensor, better performance). Another part is setting up for production in California. Some is because we have never done anything as complicated as this... neither has anyone else.

But we are getting very close.

Jim

Nice update... much appreciated

Lucas, hope Assimilate can keep up with these development too. Lim

The way I see it.......

Jim Jannard (and Red) should get an Academy Award for Technical Achievement.

Always appreciate honesty, it's hard to do.

So, I knew it was being made in the US... But setting up for producion bring a question to mind:)....

So, hiring:) ? My StgII Epic-X would sure like a base salary to help support my addiction:)

Can I say the thread title seems a bit unfortunate :?

: )

Perhaps I would do well to remember that not everyone on this board speaks American English.

An "Ace in the hole" is slang for a surprise that you have hidden that when revealed, wins the situation. It comes from Poker, where cards that are dealt face down are called "hole cards." An Ace is the best card... therefore... Ace in the hole.

Thanks Lucas.
Having NOT seen the Epic, I would still be surprised if the MX performed similarily on the Epic and rge R1 MX.

I have no doubt they can intercut well, but all those extra bits for recording and oversampling should be put to some use... -:)

What we do see on the R1 MX, though, is a different concept of ISO to what I've seen on the M - that definitely points towards a bright future.

Alright, thanks for the explanation. Billy Wilder's "Ace in the hole" was what came to my mind, with a rather different subtext. Phew :)
