When I first heard of Storm I found it difficult to separate it from the other applications available to the DIT. But then I was given the opportunity to Alpha test Storm for an upcoming feature I'm involved in.

By no stretch of the imagination is this a storm in a teacup (Pun No.2), The Foundry's Storm is most definitely the real deal. This is the application that Reduser's have been crying out for since the release of the very first Red One. I say this because in it's current Alpha status it is the seed of an application that I myself as a DIT have been wanting for over two years. Whilst Red have stepped up with the introduction of RedCine-X I firmly believe that standardizing the process and evolving the capabilities of Red RAW within a single application by a third party has been begging to happen and to be done so by a company that has the reputation not just to do it well, but to exceed all expectations. The Foundry is that company. They obviously have big plans for where Storm is heading and it's not difficult to see within seconds of booting up the application just what their intentions are.

Before I go into details I wanted to quickly cover the question 'Who is Storm for?'. Obviously the main use for Storm is an application that can be used on-set, near to camera, more often than not by a Digital Imaging Technician (DIT). I firmly believe however that many post houses, editors and colorists will find the application more and more useful as it develops. Storm is going to become one of the most used tools wherever digital footage is being captured in my humble opinion. Storm is all about Red in its current guise and that's intelligent. Because with the release of Epic in the near future and the shear amount of Red Ones around the world... Well, Red rules. But it's my belief that future updates will cover more and more cameras, and this is important for Reduser's. If an application can only support Red cameras what happens, for example, when we also have 5D's being used onset as crash cams? Should we have another application as a DIT that does all the same things? Should we transcode both formats and load them into another application to see if they can be cut together, or should we look to have applications that supports more than one codec and more than one type of camera? For me, when this happens it will be the Perfect Storm (Pun No.3).

The GUI
I'm going to start with the User interface because it was the first thing that struck me about Storm. It's simply beautiful, not in a Zoe Saldana kind of way, just very functional as applications go! It's clean, it's obvious and it's customizable. It doesn't distract from the important stuff - the footage. You can layout the panes to reflect what's most important to you as a DIT. Perhaps your director likes to see whether shots cut together - Then we use the Edit workspace. Perhaps your DoP is constantly asking for you to do a quick grade to see if he or she has got the look they wanted - Then we switch to a Grading workspace that we've structured previously to how we want it. Or perhaps you're just wanting to check shots - Then we simply switch to our Reviewing workspace. All done at the press of a button. As storm grows I'm sure it'll become common to have an Effects workspace and Tagging workspace too. But the beauty is that you can tweak and shape the look and feel to how you feel comfortable and it does it far better than most applications I've ever used.

The Foundry also intend to support the ATI Radeon cards (5770 and 5870) given Apple's commitment too these cards on newer machines. And this is great news because if you didn't already realise these cards are supported on earlier Mac Pro's going all the way back to the 2006 Mac Pro 1,1 (5770 confirmed on all 2006 Mac Pro's, 5870 confirmed on some 2006 Mac Pro's). Present Alpha releases of Storm currently only support Nvidia. HOWEVER, I've literally just a few minutes ago installed a 5770 on an old Mac Pro (Circa 2006/07) booted up Storm and it's giving instant results and everything appears to work flawlessly. I'm getting live playback from the RedRocket as well as Live Histogram, Live Waveform AND Live Vector scope simultaneously from the graphics card. The card cost me £180 so it's a no-brainer if Storm is to become your application of choice. As I say, this is an old Intel Mac Pro fitted with RedRocket and a 5770 and I'm not sure where you could improve on quality!!!

The Basics
Storm naturally supports the RedRocket. Playback quality is essentially the same as RC-X. Storm does however include an Auto setting that will alter the video quality if the system is lagging for some reason (Perhaps you are backing up to the same location whilst trying to playback). More importantly Storm supports video out on the RedRocket. So you can do a grade and run it to the same HD-SDI monitor the DoP is using with the camera. Support for colour looks should hopefully appear in the near future allowing the DIT to create looks almost on the fly and mix and match to the live feed.

The Effects Panel
In the Alpha stage of Storm we already have a bunch of cool effects (See image) which include: Adjust HSV, Adjust HSV/Hue, Auto Contrast, Curves, Color Filter, Invert, Levels, Lift Gamma Gain, SOP, Saturation, Tint, White Balance, Blanking, Flip, Flop, Pan and Scan, Box Blur, Gaussian Blur, Radial Blur, Unsharp Mask, Checkerboard, Color Wheel, Color Bars, Constant, Ramp, Detect Edges, God Rays, Soft Edges, Threshold and Vignette.

The Effects Panel is just one of the things that sets Storm apart from RC-X, but it's also one of the things that will set Storm apart from a great many applications. Again, this is where Storm will grow over time. More and more effects will be added to it's library and you will be doing things in Storm that use to cost thousands upon thousands in the past. And more importantly you will be doing them directly to R3D footage in a non-destructive environment!

Tagging
Tagging is so bloody simple it's a surprise it's never really been done before, at least not in such a simple and intuitive manner that I care to remember. Essentially you have a range of tags (See image) and you drag these tags onto the viewer or timeline, tagging all clips, the whole shot, that individual frame or the whole timeline. Those tags then stay with those shots in the project and are visible in the timeline. You can also create your own tags and there are more features on the way that will advance this functionality in Storm.

The Timeline
Storm features a timeline that is very familiar to the traditional timeline found in most NLE's these days. Which is of great importance. Why? Because this is what will undoubtedly become a thorough conform tool in the not-to-distant future. Already one can export an XML from Final Cut and drop it onto the timeline to have it relink to the original RAW footage instantly. You can cut together RAW footage right there in Storm if you wish so you can check that two shots are working well and comfort the director that it's going to work within seconds of having the drive or CF card off of the camera.

Euphonix Control Panel

The Euphonix MC Color Control Panel is a great little panel for those who haven't used it. For me it's quite a lot better than the Tangent Wave. The build quality, feel and usability belies it's pricetag (Compared to other panels!) but more importantly Storm uses it very well! I personally feel that the accuracy of the MC Color using Storm is ahead of that of RC-X. A spin of a wheel in Storm only changes the image slightly whereas a fraction of a movement in RC-X alters the image considerably. There are also more Pages. The first page on the MC Color when using Storm reports to the six dialogue boxes Kelvin, Tint, FLUT control, Shadow, DRX and Saturation. The second page has Contrast, Brightness, Exposure, Red, Green and Blue. RC-X by comparison only has the option of FLUT, Shadow, Saturation, Contrast, Brightness and Exposure

The values that are being changed are also reported on the control panel. So unlike RC-X you can be applying a grade to the RAW footage without having to have your Look Control panel visible on the screen, all the info is right there on your panel. Dragging the Look, Gamma and Gain effect onto your shot allows you to use the wheels and balls of the MC Color with a great deal of accuracy and fluidity (Currently you press shift and page on the panel to switch to LGG control).

Waveform, Histrogram and Vectorscope
These are probably worth the pricetag alone (See image). I've seen inferior versions on other applications that cost far more. Using these along with the Region of Interest tool is a great way to manually correct colour, such as white balancing demoed by Peter Majtan at IBC on the FXGuide video (Posted earlier on Reduser. See here if you haven't already).

Viewer
The viewer features a few tools that many will be familiar with and a few new ones (See Picture). From Left to Right are Pan Tool, Color Sample Tool, Magnifier Tool and the Region of Interest Tool. We then have some drop down menus which are Show Overlays, Set Viewer LUT, Show Masks. Next to this is the Show Exposure Warning which is very cool, much like the exposure built into the Red Camera now. We then have the Show individual Color Channels drop down menu with the options of RGB, Red, Green, Blue and Luma, so you can quickly jump in and check the noise on any given channel. We then have Playback options followed by a Show out of range warnings for Video and Audio both or singularly. We have the toggle to switch the Red Rocket on and off which opens a dialogue box for setting up monitor output, and finally we have a Toggle to show or hide effects. To the right we have a star that allows us to set the frame in the viewer as the clips Poster frame and then options for playback quality. At the bottom of the viewer are the playback options. Hitting the play button repeatedly will speed up playback. You can naturally nudge a clip along frame by frame too. You can have multiple viewers open as tabs within the view pane.

Metadata
The Metadata pain reports everything you could want to know about that footage that exists when it comes off of the camera and what the use has altered in its look (See Image). Note the DRX, FLUT, Saturation, Shadow and Tint have been altered under the Red Look(User) drop down.

That's it for now. But this is still the Alpha that I'm reporting on and every Friday they come out with new stuff so by November things will very likely be different... But better!
One of the things that I've found about the Foundry is that they genuinely listen, much in the same way that Red have done with regards to their cameras. With Storm you have an application that must be the very best in order for them too sell it. RedCine-X by contrast is driven by a need to supply a functioning application to use with Red's cameras. Don't get me wrong, I think RC-X is great. I just think Storm has a greater scope for the future. At some point I'll post about some of the features I've discussed with members of the Storm team and see if I can discuss some of the future Roadmap of Storm.

I will be writing a series of stories for The Foundry's website based around an upcoming feature I'm DIT'ing on that begins in earnest in a weeks time. I will discuss planning, shooting and the follow up, tying in how Storm will be used on set. The planning story should hopefully be available as of late next week and I will be sure to post about it here on Reduser.net so you can check it out.

Thanks for reading, feel free to write any questions and I'll try and answer asap.

Trust me when I tell you that this application will go down a Storm (Pun No.4... Ok I'll stop already with the sh*t puns).

Paul

Thanks Paul for the upclose review. The comments are extremely encouraging for the RED community at large. I will be locked in for your upcoming reviews as well.

That's for sure. Live scopes while outputting through Rocket are going to be a Godsend, and I've paid more than 10X the price of Storm for a single scope.

This sounds like an app made by real, working post guys. I have to say that the partnership that seems to have developed between RED and The Foundry seems like a perfect match. A similar focus on innovation and making the best product they can. (I do hope The Foundry doesn't share the sliding schedule disease ;-) )

My only question is -- How can I get into that alpha testing program?

Great review, Paul!

Call me psycho or overly pedantic, but it seems to me that two of the tag icons are flip-flopped. A cowboy shot cuts off just above the knee so the holster with revolver can be captured in the shot... Medium-full is more around the belt line. Or at least that's the way we do it 'round here.

I'm volunteering myself for alpha/beta test as well. I'll be downloading Storm the second it's available anyway.

Thanks Jeff, we'll fix that!

LOL! As an easterner, I've always wondered a little about a "cowboy". I always figured it as a shot that was wide enough to show head to saddle when he was sitting on a horse. Glad to have that cleared up.

oh, the scopes! you all are my heroes. great to see a "pull no punches" application...great to see a group doing for post- what RED has done for cameras.

one of the features which I always loved about Clipfinder was the ability to include a little text file with notes in each mag, about each clip.

the tagging system looks great, but is there also a way to add this functionality, pretty please? on the editing side, it was so nice to be able to open a little text file and have a set of notes for each clip, nestled in each mag, which could travel with the mag.

is it November 1st, yet?

Hi Meryem,
In fact we already have "notes" which are just tags with a freeform text field. You add it to the clip, frame or timeline and a text box pops up for you to type into.
Hope that hits the spot.
Sorry, no, it's Oct 9th over here...

For ScarletUsers Too!

For ScarletUsers Too!

In case any budget-minded future Scarlet users missed it (from Peter Majtan, posted on ScarletUser):

Storm is being optimized for use without RED Rocket as well. With RED Rocket You will get broadcast monitor output and faster "renders" (transcodes), but even without it Storm will work real-time - especially with 3K RAW data. As it is now the Storm is screaming fast on my MBP without RR - and that is with 4K RAW data. One of my favorite things to do during IBC was when people got amazed how fluid the Storm was even with tasks like range-limited color-correction on the Mac Pro with RR, I would pull out my MBP and show them the exact same clip with the exact same effects and blow them away even further with the performance on the MBP without RR, which was of course real-time...

At $375,- Storm is going to be a no-brainer for all Scarlet users. And a must-have too...

Peter

The scopes were a pleasant surprise. That's a feature I was going to miss in the move from prosumer HMC to Scarlet Fixed.

its forgotten that there was a R3D tool available when the RED ONE first came out... it was almost 5 times the cost of the camera body so out of the reach of most RED Owners but that is where the Foundry have it nailed and I'm sure they are going go kick some serious arse

Sorry, no, it's Oct 9th over here...

great, more Fridays coming then, with new features enabled!

thanks for the reply, it sounds great - having the narrative option can help a lot.

oh and a note to Paul - thanks for the write-up - been looking forward to hearing more about this, the screen grabs are a huge help.

The Foundry also intend to support the ATI Radeon cards (5770 and 5870) given Apple's commitment too these cards on newer machines. Hi Paul,
Chief STORM maker Juan just told me that they slipped ATI support into Alpha3 - we just didn't know.
STORM dev team rocks!

Glad I'm keeping them on their toes since I promised that I'd be chucking one in too see how it went. All the doable things I've thrown at The Foundry from a DIT perspective has been amended or added each week. It's great to see. I'm sure with the release on November 1st that there will be a bunch more great suggestions that The Foundry will leap to the challenge to put in. It's a great app, with a great bunch of people at the helm. Kudos.

Paul

Thanks for this Paul,

I had already pretty much made up my mind on going with Storm, CS5 Production Suit, and DaVinci Resolve.
But this write up, a nice one in deed, has surely convinced me even more that it is the best decision to integrate Storm,
in my new Studio in Italy, especially considering that in our first Motion
picture, we need the list amount of things to worry about ;)

You won't regret it Ketch! I can also vouch for the Euphonix MC Color if you haven't arranged your control panels yet.

For the control panel, is a dilemma at the moment, as I don't know if have two separate systems or one, at the beginning I like to keep costs down, yet getting the Full DaVinci Panel control system with Mac License, is in the thinking, even so 30k is not chunk of change to spend on a Coloring suit.

As far as starting out otherwise with out the full DaVinci control panel, then will have to go with the Wave, as I don't think the Euphonix, is supported with Resolve, and here is were my dilemma starts, as the possibility of getting a separate system to Color Grade, and a second one only as a DIT station wit the Euphonix.

Looking right now on what to do as far as my MAC PRO solution, one or two stations, but definitely one station with the Mac Pro will be configured for S3D, with multiple Panels and dual RR, which will all go in to Big Foot carts built with Maxx Digital.

So really need to get in to specifics to figure this one out.

I know Wave support has been mentioned in a previous thread, but I'm also adding a vote for Wave support as soon as possible. I bought my Wave because it was supported by Color and Redcine-X before the release and support of the MC Color. I know I'm not the only one who purchased the Wave based on early RED support.
