What would be the cost of a basic Epic setup? This setup would need to be able to shoot films on and record audio.

Also, when will I be able to put a deposit or order an Epic? I don't currently own a Red One.

Thanks in advance :)

To run an Epic you could go pretty basic, and or start with the full minimum package:

5" LCD
REDMOTE
SIDE CF MODULE
MODULE ADAPTOR
BASE I/O MODULE
PRO BATTERY MODULE
2 REDVOLT STANDARD BATTERIES
TRAVEL CHARGER

This wil run you about 34k with the Body.

Off course you can just go with the new SSD Module, or upgrade the Audio to the Pro model, and so on, but the above configuration is the pretty basic, also does not include the new BOMB EVF, which will add 3.2k.

Thanks, that makes it a lot simpler. I got your PM and have emailed you.

34k plus at least 10k in good class, if not 20k. I'm budgeting 60k for my package next year.

lenses,Bomb EVF,Matt boxes, follow focus, monitors, head and legs, filters, batteries, hard drives or SSD etc these are all part of a basic kit surely...for a basic kit you need to be looking at a minimum of over a $100 000.

Thing is

1. Many have these things, and you'll need them "whatever" to some extent.
2. Define: Basic... -:)

Lens-wise you could start with some good stills lenses, either Canon or Nikon. Say 5k for a good range.

You'll need a decent tripod, used from say 2k

You'll need something to record onto, say 3k minimum.

You'll need a back-up system for all your footage, 2k.

And you'll need a fast computer to handle all that footage, also from 2k onwards.

But you'll get one beast of a camera.

Thanks for all the replies!

I currently own a PMW-EX1 with a Letus Extreme, so I do have the basics including a tripod, Chrosziel Mattebox and follow focus, filters, and lenses. Of course when I get the Epic I am planning on getting some good Red lenses, although my Zeiss ones are pretty good.

I edit on a Quad Core Mac Pro, 8GB memory, and 2TB hard drive space. I am planning on adding another two 2TB hard drives though, so I would have 4TB. I don't have an external raid or backup drive as of right now.

What else would I need for the Epic on the post-production side?

Follow focus

Wouldn't the follow focus basically be for the PL lenses starting off, because the future of the REDMOTE PRO and the lens mount features? But overall, I'd say going "all out" for this package that would be a "comfortable" budget.

I would highly recommend the RedRocket card for your post-production side. The speed of rendering will be well worth the money in the first major project you edit.

Thanks. I was actually looking at the Red Rocket and I was wondering if that's what I'll need. I'll get that along with the Epic.

I remember hearing something about 3rd party vendors selling RED cameras, but I assume that (if it even happens) it will only be the Scarlet 2/3 they will sell? No chance for the Epic coming to a store like B&H is there?

And I'm not planning on going all out, and spending over $100,000. $34,000 sounds like a good budget for me right now. Well, plus the red rocket so like around $40,000 I'm guessing.
