Okay guys,

finally decided that I just simply can not rely 100% on others to do all my Editing work, simply because in many occasions I need an immediate sample of what we have captured, and not all the time have a DIT or some one present to Upload, see Dailies and or do small simple Edits, and Color Grading, or possibility to send away Footage.

So as I already know and work with TOO MANY SW Programs including the Photoshop family and Painting programs for my Photography work, I like to keep the SW Programs to the minimum and best selection.

So.. Please assist in configuring my personal Mac Station to have the indispensable and not have cross platform that do the Exact same thing!!

Example:

Final Cut Pro and Adobe Premier Pro, this do the same exact thing, so I don't need both, and in fact already decided for the Adobe Production Suit, with APP and AE.

For color grading, I have Chosen not Apple Color, but instead decided to go with DaVinci Resolve and not Color.

RedCine-X and RocketCine-X do the asme thing right? But RocketCine-X has more, and don't need both correct?

But I wil also still need RedRushes or what else??

This is were I also get a bit confused, so I like some assistance in setting up my system to have everything I need, without multiplying applications and programs, making me learn two programs that will do the same thing.

Lastly, I know I have seen here and there a great amount of Videos to learn the RedCine-X or other RED SW programs, can you please link...

Thanks in advance for your kind inputs.

My easy setup/ recomendation -> For Now Redcine-X (will test STORM in October) + Adobe Production Suit "CS5" (with Lynda.com)+ waiting for DaVinci Resolve (currently working with Colorista II in AE)

Edit: Adobe working on "Reload Multiple RMD automatically or automatic as an option"

Kwans suggestions are sweet.

-Going with Adobe Premier Pro is a wonderful solution, you wont necessarily need FCS, how ever. For the future it cant hurt one bit to have that as an option on your computer. At times you may possibly run into an editor whom can help you who has oh IDK say 12 years experience with FCP and you will stand to benefit his abilities with FCP and color, simpley due to experience as opposed to Premier. So think about that for the long term and its not un-reasonalbe you can get an upgrade version i believe for $200 most of us do it.
I have a feeling youll have both on your system. Im sure there are plenty of FCP guys out in Italy also.

-Resolve has lots of upside, but I cant confirm that until I have used it for long enough. And im still looking to test it.
So if you were to dedicate the time to learn it i think thats awesome.

-I used to be into RocketCine-X but its all about RedCine-X and you may want to consider
Storm down the line.

-RedRushes is nice to have on your computer but once you have a Rocket. Its hard for me to say use RedRushes.

-You have my number and i will do anything i can to help.

Other very useful software.

Clipfinder
Veescope live if you do green screen
Shotput pro or R3D Media Manager
Quite possibly Storm but I yet have to test it out.

I have used six editing packages thru the years. Avid, PP and Final cut Pro extensively. They all have there pros and cons. They will all do what you need. I have both final cut studio and adobe's latest. You might as well get CS5. You will need photoshop and After effects anyway. I mainly edit with FCP but they (apple) haven't made many improvements since I went to the Mac in 2008. What I am curious about is what Divinci and Storm will work best with. Color (IMHO) was the best color correction program included with any of these but that is about to change. I do believe that Divinci and Storm are Mac only (at least to begin). What ever you choose, Lynda.com is an excellent suggestion. Good luck

Thanks guys,

I do have the FCS installed, and will keep it just for those occasions when needed, but I use Photoshop on a regular basis for my Photo work, so it was natural for me to go with the Master Sweet.

I guess more then anything was looking in understanding the need of one vs. the other, especially so in the case of the Red SW programs and now Storm, their functions and so on, so I guess if I have the RockeCineX then non need for RedRushes, and Storm is to take over RedCineX with more functionalities?

Hey Ketch, before all the cuda acceleration and native r3d support, it really boiled down to presonal preference. I think many find final cut cleaner and generally more responsive of an interface compared to premiere. It's fairly easy to switch from one to the other though. As Apple has fallen behind the clear answer is CS5, but you already have it! Also I thought it was said that red rushes was pretty much obsolete now as there is native r3d support for most software or if need be you render out of rcx.

Yeah that was also why I went for CS5, also the fact that I use Photoshop was an added bonus.

I guess seems that will be:

CS5 Suit
DaVinci Resolve
Storm

That seems to be the winning ticket ! With a Red Rocket inside of course.

Still waiting on more info on how Resolve manages with EDL exported from PPro and AE.

Actually TWO RR on each System to take advantage of Multi Rocket support ;) especially for our S3D Projects.

At this point, multiple Rockets are useful if you have a specific need. However, they don't fully accelerate a lot of transcoding tasks because there are other bottlenecks out there. All depends on what you're doing most. If you're shooting 3D, get two Rockets. Two Rockets should help plow through 5K Epic footage faster, etc..

As for editing software. You already have CS5, so that's a great place to start. I think if Adobe fixes a few more of the issues in Premiere -- external audio TC is better, but still an issue, for example, then Premiere will really take off. Many people are jumping ship from Final Cut Studio to Adobe CS5. Let's face it, FCP is a dinosaur at this point and everyone already owns Photoshop, which makes Premiere in a suite easy to upgrade to if you don't already have it.

I don't recommend standardizing on one single editing solution though. Also plan on picking up Avid MC5. If you don't want to go the Avid route, then FCS is still a viable option. But I think you will be limiting yourself if you just work in Adobe. For a single user or small operation, only Adobe is fine. Your clients may dictate what you use at some point too. For example, I'd love to just leave FCS behind, but I still have clients that give me FCP projects or request I give them FCP projects. So... it's just one more tool in the toolbox.

One problem we have within RED workflows and post right now is that so many of the new tools coming to market now, like STORM, are designed to interact best with Final Cut. All because Final Cut was the first, and best for working with RED for a while and a lot of RED workflows centered around FCP as the NLE solution. Now that Avid and Adobe have stepped up their game with native R3D support that works well, we find that some of these new apps are lacking support for what have become better editing solutions.

Oh yeah, definitely add STORM to your list. DaVinci Resolve looks great, but I haven't bought into it just yet myself. Still waiting on a few things to fall into place. If you don't go with Resolve, then you will probably want FCS just for Color. In reality, it's about the next best thing to Resolve for anything under $10K. SpeedGrade is also great, but will cost more than Resolve to get up and running. I already went down that road nearly 2 years ago. It worked out well, but given what Resolve is offering, it's hard to beat. The trick is having a proper system that can run all of these tools well.

Yes Jeff, doing all as said, and yes I do have the FCS and will kept it on my system.

First 3 projects in Italy wil be in S3D, so wil be sure to put the system thru the paces, but will look forward also to see your advices on the 12 core system it self, or maybe two 8 core systems.

Also we will have Corrado's support and collaboration with EMotion and they already have a S3D Editing room with the Pablo system.

Heh, it's funny that I have CS5 Suite and FCS and have been vacillating back and forth between FCP and PP. I was hoping to see a clear winner in this thread, but alas, I too find myself needing both. Given that I use AE more than anything else as I do a lot of 3D and compositing (from Maya and Blender sources) I thought Premiere would absolutely dominate for me, but interestingly, I find the feeling in Premiere to be a lot closer to Final Cut than I would have thought. Although thankfully, AE is like Photoshop in motion for me :)

Many of the people I work with that do bigger editing projects told me that for small stuff they don't mind premiere (mostly CS4 experience) but on a lot of their larger projects, Premiere just was not stable for them. That said, most of the reviews I hear about CS5 lately and my experience have shown that it works pretty well.

Mainly I keep supporting both for the same reason I have ProTools on my machine. I LOATHE working in ProTools as it in inferior in my opinion to both Logic Pro and Digital Performer (which I own both of) but many places only use ProTools and it makes my life easier to just work in what they use if I am passing projects back and forth.

Anyone though that has asked the same question as you, I've told them CS5 Suite. To me it just wins in more ways. (And Soundtrack Pro is the WORST audio editing software I have EVER USED!) :)

What we need is a 100% universal translator so we can all work in whatever program we like! :) Yes, I know that will never happen, but its not always the best programs that are the standards unfortunately!
