  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Release It Already

Yeah, who cares if not much more than record work, and the camera has massive potential but can't fulfil it yet - RED can just handle that for us in extremely expensive recalls and upgrades!

/ sarcasm

It'll be released when it's ready. Nothing more to say that that.

Oh, yeah, I totally remember RED making a promise to deliver my camera in 2009. Wait, actually I think that Jim might have said once or twice that they might not be able to make the date.

Oh, wait, what's that? It says that delivery dates are subject to change at the bottom of every single one of Jim's posts?

Wow, that doesn't actually sound like a promise at all.

Release dates are estimates of when the engineers think the product will be fully designed, debugged, tested and the manufacture ramped up. As with any engineering project, problems come up that take longer than expected to solve. Get over it.

Wow, handsome and diplomatic

/ sarcasm

I think the main problem is that Red created a huge demand on a camera that didn't exist.
More and more people hearing from red new cams and looking for informations, these people talking to other people,... it created a "Buzz" on an "non-existing-camera-for-customers-forthemoment". So they wait, look for info, wait, talk, wait and get the guys from red under pressure.
Scarlet and Epic were already a succes as a project. But it takes long time between project and final gear.
Now all we have to do is "wait again" and pray not to be the 1534th guy to book a scarlet when it ships ! ;)

Sorry, I'm just sick of people whining about RED "promising" to release cameras over and over again... It was exactly the same for a year and a half before the RED ONE was released, and now people have been whining about Scarlet's release for another two years...

It just gets quite tiring...

Ha relax buddy. I didn't know much about RED before then and when the head of a camera MFG'r said they were coming out with a camera around this time I was pretty damn stoked. Since I've learnt a heck of a lot about RED. I'm on the same page as you with waiting thats for sure.

I understand Red's perspective on not wanting to release anything with bugs. Remember the first few months the Red One was released? It was pretty tough some times.

You know, I hear this a lot, it seems to have become part of the lore of RED, but I was there, with camera #63. We got our camera in October 2007, and I was on a 7 week feature length movie shoot less than one week after receiving my camera. And other than a slightly lose power connector on the battery plate, which was fixed with a rubber band, we didn't have one single problem with our camera during the ENTIRE shoot, and we were in some rough and wild terrain for part of that shoot. Even post production wasn't that big of a problem, once something is digital, there's always a way to work with it, and that was the attitude we took.

I say, release the cameras to those that are willing to roll with a few bumps.

whats wrong with waiting ?

It takes a long time ! :emote_headwall::aureola:

Moreover, it takes a really really long time when you miss patience and are waiting for a year !:emote_head_explode:
But I don't care waiting a bit more, I'll get a fixed and an S35 scarlet when they're out anyway. :D

jumping in here even though i'm a no-nothing newbie:

while i understand that RED has made it extraordinarily clear that they will move around deadlines/ship dates/etc., it is still slightly frustrating to be kept so in the dark about the scarlet release date. for those of us who have films in the pipeline, and are trying to make plans for when to shoot and on what format, it would be incredibly beneficial to know what our options are going to be. i just finished shooting a short on a R1 which was a fabulous experience, could not ask for more from the camera, but the form factor of the camera--really the weight--would make shooting with the R1 for the film i have down the road an impossibility. i could bite the bullet and accept that i have to shoot on a 5D or a 7D, even though it feels like moving backwards after having shot with the R1, but it would be great to know for sure whether using the scarlet is an impossibility.

so while i respect and understand the company's unwillingness to set a real release date, i hope they understand the gravity of not letting that information out to the public.

regardless, i'm insanely excited about the scarlet, whenever it comes out!

best,
n

It's getting tiring hearing people who think it's ok to lead people on for 2 years...

Oh, I'll love the camera when it comes out but it's frustrating to see multiple release date promises come and go.

Nick, I have a feeling that there will be alot of choices within the next 6 months.... if your film doesn't start for a while. Hopefully the Scarlet will be one of those choices..... Exciting times.

Jim, the natives are getting restless!

I'm pretty sure Jim & co. are more than aware of the situation and way, way more pissed off about the delays than any of us.

Not picking on you, Nick, as there are dozens of people expressing these very legitimate frustrations. But consider this: Many months ago, RED knew they were going to produce a Scarlet but had little idea exactly how long it would take. Many companies (camera or otherwise) might sit on that info but RED has shown that is not their style. Yet, they are honest enough to say, however tongue-in-cheek, "We don't know know what we are doing and anything/everything can change." Car companies show concept cars years in advance and everyone knows that means a lot of changes will occur before this car is a reality - if it ever is.

So time passes and they make progress. People want to know about that progress so RED is willing to share info openly - still cautioning about taking anything as fact.

Things progress further and people are eager to hear what is going on. Again they share, with caveats. But people stop hearing those caveats.

So what is your prescription? If they refuse to give an exact date, people start doubting - is there really a Scarlet? Is there something wrong? Why won't they talk to me. On the other hand, when they try to provide their best guesses - however general, and again with caveats, they are blasted for delays and accused of hyperbole if their guesses don't prove accurate.

With all due respect, I don't think any of us are "being kept in the dark." RED can't seem to win with at least half of its "watchers" at any given time - "tell me more" vs. "stop lying to me." What makes anyone think that Jim, et al got up this morning knowing when Scarlet will ship? He may be talented, an effective leader or any other attributes you care to attach to him, but I don't think he is either omniscient or omnipotent. Give the guy a break. Do you doubt that he and his team are doing the very best they can?

Hang in. Personally, I have no doubt it will be more than worth the wait.

Car technology doesn't evolve near as much as a film/photo camera technology. I'm not complaining about RED attitude towards deadlines but you must admit that if you release a car 4 or 5 years after a concept it will be (with some sort of mods along the way), a car whose roots belong to that concept, and paradoxically, when it happens you realize that the concept was (at least in terms of design and features), some years ahead of the actual car.
If you intent to do the same on the digital camera world you will never going to release a camera, simply because you are going to install that new feature that you can due to later research in the field, or wait until you have the chance to implement some new technology!

Will all due respect, Scarlet was a camera I've intended to buy 2 years ago! Again, I'm not complaining of "being kept in the dark" because Jim's signature says it all.
But then again, I would like very much to know what I want to buy next! I was the OP of "Panasonic AF100 vs RED Scarlet S35" thread and I'm glad I've posted the question. I'm now leaning to the little brother 8x Scarlet after all I've read in this forum, BUT...

...I need a camera for my next project which I want to start at the beginning of the next year, and I would very much like to know if I can wait for a Scarlet or not. I believe Panasonic will deliver their AF100 later this year as announced and for how much I like the specs of the new fixed Scarlet I just can't pass another year waiting for it, and not filming my project!

Yes I know... Many of you Americans will tell me "rent a camera and wait for the Scarlet", but I live in a country that makes almost its feature length films with 500k Euro!!! and whose biggest film investment was 3,5 million Euro. That doesn't pay 1/4 of Angelina Jolie's Salt cache and I work on Documentary films, which have an even smaller budget which only covers accommodation, transportation, and the salary of a tight crew. So renting a camera is not an option for me.

For all that, I think that who thinks to be a future RED owner could be at least slightly informed about delivery times, and make their buying decisions from that.

What a bunch of pathetic, lazy, whiners. If anyone here complaining in this thread actually took the time to read up on the subject, Jim specifically said that Scarlet has been delayed b/c one supplier went out of business due to the recession and the other is having issues unlike anything he's ever seen.

That's a euphemism for workers killing themselves b/c they are over worked, herded like cattle and grossly underpaid.

http://apnews.myway.com/article/20100818/D9HLUQ100.html

If anyone here complaining thinks their need for a camera that will probably best a Sony F23 for a small fraction of the price justifies what's going on, they are horribly selfish.

So wait for Scarlet or go buy an EX-1, 7D or used HVX. If you have a good movie that needs to be made now, great, go do it. And if your film is no good, the difference between 3K and 1.9K isn't going to make shit look any better, just sharper.

Nelson... You lost me there, that was quite unclear.

Nelson, there's a chance that even when Fixed Scarlet is available the R1 owners get priority (glad to be proved wrong).

Are you holding back your project because of a camera? If you can do so indeterminately, no problems, but doesn't sound like a good idea either.

I'm sure the AF-100 would be a good tool that could deliver good results, just sell it later when Scarlet is readily available.
