Sometimes I am really appalled by how (thankfully a few) posters seem to lose all sense of decency when posting:

  • A poster suggests that a very respected DP is taking money so that he would use a specific camera.
  • A poster re-labels the RED showreel to make it look like his own work.
  • Someone suggests that another very respected DP is overrated and only popular because he runs a discussion board.
  • A number of posters call a perfectly workable camera a piece of crap or compare it to the iPhone.
  • Several posters get personal over a commercially successful film, and make assumptions about the director that leave a very bad taste in the mouth.
  • Respected craftsmen come to this forum to talk about reservations or problems they had with a RED camera, and are subsequently ridiculed, attacked or find their motives questioned.
  • Private e-mails or PMs are made public, photos copied without permission, whole sections of web pages copied, quotes taken out of context.
  • Other redusers are badmouthed before trying out the proper channels.
  • People openly discussing violence as a solution to get money owed.
  • Posters filling up the For Sale sections with lots of separate threads, rather than combining them into one post.
  • People still refusing to adhere to the Real Name policy that has been in affect for over a year now.

Please, before pushing the Submit button, think twice. If a post makes you angry, feel free to write a reply to get it out of your system, but go outside for a little walk before you actually submit it. Do not get personal. Do not ask for pity. Put yourself in the other person's shoes.

Think.
Before.
You.
Post.

Show respect.

Thank you, Reduser has the ability to be one of the nicer places on the internet, with great discussions, lets keep it that way.

Well said, Martin. There is always room for information which helps us expand our knowledge and that encourages us to grow. There is never room for personal putdowns that discourage us from growth. Life is a journey on which we hopefully learn and grow everyday. And THIS is a great open forum where I have learned much and have applied that knowledge to grow my craft and will apply it to making the best films possible. I for one am very thankful to be here.

Thank you, Martin, your post should be required reading.

The RedUser "real name" policy is very weak, even when adhered to. I really wish posters were required to give real first and last names and some information about their professional status. I find the most egregious posts are from people using a first name and initial with no contact information.

I fear our "Real Name" policy is like a "trolls welcome" sign.

Good shooting and best regards,

Leo

I agree. Many come here to browse posts and to try and learn a thing or two and it's a pain when you have to read through pages of personal attacks. We may all have wildly different opinions on different things, but remember you answer isn't always right for all.

I really like this forum, but like most places it can get a bit hairy when there's a full moon. Scarletuser (ahem), is quite a nice refuge when it all gets a bit much. (Actually I'm off there now to see what goes down.)

One thing I like about RED User is the general high level of competence and professional attitude. I like this "place" and I like the idea of keeping it fun friendly and most importantly keeping the signal to noise ratio high.

I firmly believe that its important to make these changes starting with the "man in the mirror."

I sometimes think I am being rude, and I try not to be, but I am frequently told I come across "wrong" on-line. I'm always trying to do better. I've certainly walked away from a few posts to re-think them.

That said I have seen most of the abuses on Martin's list, and when I see them I try to call them out.

Good post, and good things to remember. Thank You.

And if you see a post that you find offensive, abusive or ill-fitting, feel free to use the small
report.gif
button that you'll find at the bottom left of each post. This one will send out an alert to all moderators.

(Thanks btw to all the people who already have been alerting us. Great help, and much better than entering into an argument here.)

In addition to all the offenses listed, there has generally been an increase in bickering here. It didn't used to be that way. For a while, we had a really friendly and positive community here. A very rare oasis on the net, compared to places like C.com where they do nothing but bicker.

I'm not sure what changed and when. I hope we can get back to that. A zero-tolerance policy on personal insults and attacks and all forms of bickering might help. This would include attacks on people's assumed motives and their integrity (like what happened to Rodney).

When I see that stuff at the Timescapes forum, I kill it on sight and threaten to delete the offender's entire account instantly, along with an IP ban. That has left our forum probably the most peaceful, friendly and helpful corner of the net you will find. ;^)

I am not a fan at all of any "zero tolerance" policies.

I think that putting up with a little grief is good for our character, and gives offenders a chance to learn.

We don't want to exclude people after all, but rather to include them in our craft and profession. That means we have to help them learn to be more professional, and we can't do that if they cross the line and we axe them.

I'm not a moderator here, but I'd prefer to tread very lightly with the "banhammer." Moderators should focus on increasing the positivity, and helping people become better community members.

I for one would appreciate it if, assuming I crossed some line, someone would tell me what I did and give me an example that expresses what I want to say without crossing the line.

Since that's what I want for me, that's what I want for everyone. Do unto others and all that.

Banning? Last I checked, all mankind had the right to voice their individualistic opinions. At least in most of the free world anyhow.

I understand and sympathize with this thread but folks, you take the good with the bad... We don't live in Utopia.

Don't you all have thick skin from working in the industry of make believe?

Thanks Martin.

Reduser's noise can become quite invasive and tend to take over at the worst times. At the best time it's a fountain of information.

Treating it like a room you have a choice to enter or leave as you wish is the best thing. Ultimately if it gets to noisy then the pros will find another place to have the great conversations, but I am sure that is not likely to happen.

David

too much noise is counter-productive... general rudeness and disrespect amongst the membership base is little more than counter-productive...

This is not a government... it is a privately owned and operated forum, and the goal is to serve as many people as possible as effectively as possible... sometimes the pruning shears need to come out to tone down the noise when it gets too overwhelming and hinders the flow of information... if this were just some free-speech experiment, I don't think the forum would serve very many people that well at all...

Feeling like we can be disrespectful or rude to other members on the board b/c it is our right to do so doesn't really wash, imo... respect the house you visit, respect the members, etc...

No one wants to hang on a board full of people arguing and taking jabs at each other all the time... REDuser is a very energetic and passionate community, and we do take the good with the bad as a result... ebb and flow...

It's not what you say... It's how some people say it that becomes the problem... we aren't bout trying to limit the flow of information, just about trying to keep it productive and on point as much as possible.

Excellent Jason,

People need to sometimes be reminded that entering this forum is like walking into a room. Don't say anything you would not say in front of a group of people. People tend to be a bit looser with the keyboard that they would be with their mouth.

And when they run their mouth....well... it's obvious.

I like the way the policies have evolved and grown with the community, I appreciate that.

David

Hope my behavior is at least OK. I try to be proper, but like everyone else here, I am not perfect.

BTW, Martin, you just inspired me to delete a photo I "respectfully" jacked off Imdb.

I think everyone here is just getting a little antsy because they're holding their breath for "a few certain cameras" to ship. It'd be interesting to see if there's a change of attitude once the Epics and Scarlets ship. Right now, 80% of the forum topics are Epic and Scarlet "SPEC-ulations" and those seem to get really heated.

ebb and flow...

While that is part of it, if it isn't one thing, it is often another... Though, I don't necessarily expect the coming of some highly anticipated cameras finally to the market to calm things down any :)
