This is moderately self-promoting (although I don't sell Avid or anything) and I've already posted a link in the Avid workflow forum, but...

Avid Media Composer 5.0 ships in a few days and now integrates native RED RAW support with the AMA features, it's fast, easy and powerful.

I've posted a long and rambling review of Media Composer 5 which goes into a lot of the things that have changed in this version.

And, I've posted a brief summary of RED workflow in Media Composer 5 (including a video demo of the process of linking to a folder of .R3D media). The video is just over a minute long - it take 12 seconds to index and link to the 93 clips containing 46 minutes of footage, then they are editable. There is full RAW control right from the bin.

I cut on Media Composer every day, so I'm certainly an Avid fan, but it's definitely fair to say this stuff is a pretty massive leap forward for Avid. The only question left for me is about the workflow from Avid to other apps is with this method, but it should be pretty solid.

On my underpowered laptop (a Compaq with Dual-Celeron 1.6GHz and 4GB RAM) I actually get stable playable video from 2K source files - so it's very workable.

Thanks for the review, can't wait to see it in action for real.
This is definately the biggest leap forward for Avid in ages. Wider AMA support is a huge improvement for file based workflows !
Did you experience any bugs so far ?
It's pretty good news if you were able to edit R3D files on such a laptop.

When exactly is it supposed to ship ?

June 10 in the US is the release date.

I didn't find any bugs with my tests, but they weren't exhaustive by any means. I was testing with a limited number of 2K 2:1 clips, shot quite some time ago with an old build, but I've no reason to suspect they'd be any different with newer MX material.

The playback on my laptop can become troublesome with more applications open, but again I tend to consider it actually slightly below the minimum spec, so should be better on faster machines. The transcode time to DNxHD seems pretty snappy too, so that's an option. It is fairly simple to relink back to original AMA files from a sequence edited with material transcoded from the AMA - so would be reasonable to bring rushes in, transcode to DNxHD36, edit and then relink to RAW.

Can you walk me through how you do this process? I've upgraded to MC5. Brought in some RED files via AMA. Transcoded a clip to DNxHD 36, cut a test sequence and now want to relink back to the original RED files via the AMA.

I've tried the Clip>Relink option with Allow relinking of imported/AMA clips by Source File name as well as looked at Video Parameters (no RED option for Specific Resolution.

do you guys know about a fix for the "AMAProducerTask::Execute AMA Plug-in Unable to Provide Sample" error as well as the FREQUENT "OUT OF MEMORY" errors i keep getting?
thanks,
melissa

I'm getting the same problems constantly on MC 5.0.1 as well as OUT OF MEMORY and numerous other playback bugs. Has anyone successfully edited in MC5 without so many crashes and bugs? I'm on a mac Pro Quad-Core 2x3.2, 8gb RAM Nitris DX. The media lives on a MAXX Raid via SAS.

we´re editing a feature in our facility with MC 5. Shots are from MX and non MX cameras in 4,5k WS. So far we just got in trouble when there are RSX files saved in the orig. data.
Since we remove the RSX files prior to input, everything runs really smooth.
our Avids are on PC.
