EPIC and Alexa...

Mr Jannard

Curious as to how/why these conversations always turn into what's coming in the future. I have the utmost respect for the way which you have built a company that changed digital imaging forever, but as a DP I must use the tools available to me for a certain job, and comparison and testing is part of how we make our choice. I am certain that Sony, and Arri have their future product development plans, but we gotta work with what we have now. It seems that the discussion always veers towards future initiatives whenever there is a question of Red's, current offering not winning hands down. No disrespect meant just curious.
Ed, How's Mitch Gross doing? Haven't heard from him directly since he got the Alexa dealership.

Ted at RED has already confirmed that they will be able to make ProRES or AVID DNXHD modules that will record a 1080signal.

David

I think you may of heard wrong or Ted was just messing with you.... No ProRES module has been confirmed yet :)

Thanks for the clarity.

But I did say "you'd be able to make it" not that you "would be making it"

I know that this depends on may factors including a licensing agreement with Apple. Who knows what deal ARRI has already made with them and whether that is an exclusive deal with exclusive terms.

Is the H.264 module a certainty?

Don't know the man but I have seen his posts about Phantom in a conversation with Mr Jannard over there. In just the past day or two.

Went back and looked... it was another poster who referenced him. Never mind.

I think RED is also able to make their own RGB/YUV wavelet codec that will be much better than Prores.. I think they already have it.. I mean the RED RAY codec.. I don't know if it is wavelet or other type of compression technology but what is written about it in this forum is great at amazing bitrate..
I also remember mentioning that Scarlet will be able to record full frame 1080p.. which will not be RAW.. it will be RED's new RGB codec..
I don't know what is the big benefit from having H264 module if the camera is able to record RGB 1080p, except for rushes reviewal, ie sending them to client for review.. easier codec for playback..
RED could've licensed cineform from the beginning.. but, no.. one the big things behind RED is the compression technology they make.. this is what made this camera affordable RAW shooter at the first place..

I believe that when Epics and Scarlets are shipping,, we will have a better option recording 1080p RGB directly from the camera..

I have been thinking along the same lines. When they don't do the obvious, it just seems they have a better plan.

Of course 'will be able to' doesn't imply that you are :) Just that you are capable of it. Hehe.

They have mentioned there will be different compression modules available or maybe even offer different compression techniques within the brain .Not to mention they could create modules for codecs not yet developed; Talk about future proofing, can't wait!:emote_popcorn:

All this converstions about Epic really makes me wanna have one NOW. I don't care if it's ready or it will break down once in everyday. I just want one.

EPIC definitely has the overall advantage over Alexa and I'll buy the EPIC, no doubt.

However, I'm sure Jim is not very happy with Alexa's slight advantage in DR, despite being gracious about it. Jim always wants to be first, he wants to build the BEST camera in the world, in all respects (including DR).

Therefore, I suspect he is a bit unhappy with Alexa's (small) win. We can only hope he'll be back with a vengeance - I mean Monstro. Which, by the way, will have a larger pixel design.

That's funny...pretty much inner child of every RED ONE owner speaking...gimme EPIC! want EPIC NOW!

my head says be patient, my greedy little heart says fork it over!

We believe you CAN have resolution, dynamic range, high frame rates, RAW, good color science, easy post solutions and modularity. We weren't perfect a couple of years ago when we released the RED ONE and we aren't perfect now. But that is our lofty goal. If we motivate other companies to chase perfection, then we have done something good for the industry. I just did not see a rapid push to elevate digital 5 years ago and that is the only reason we stepped in.

That would have been me Elsie. Hiya.

Mitch PM'd me to inform me of my mistake. Being from Australia, I've never met the guy either but he seemed well and full-o-beans by his post:wink5:
