Yeah, I was surprised by that about the GH1 too as I would pick one up, but I do enough shots with the camera very far away from me that even with an articulating LCD it would make it very hard to work with. An external display REALLY helps in these situations.
Also, pertaining to lens on the 7D, I have actually been using the Sigma 30mm prime F1.4. It is AMAZING. Stay away from the Sigma zooms, I have two and they are pretty crappy, but the primes (including the 50mm 1.4) are REALLY nice. After being on a few different shoots, people have actually gone out and bought one because the results are so nice.
And for ultrawide, the Tokina 11-16 F2.8 is awesome as well. We have the Canon 10mm-20mm?(forget the upper range) and it is a very nice lens, but having the F2.8 on the Tokina is VERY VERY good. I pretty much won't use a lens slower than F2.8 only because I like to shoot at night and with that lens, I can stay below 1600ISO on every shot. for me 1600ISO and higher has too much noise.
