  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Major improvement... free as usual.

When we discover something... we are thrilled. Since we love our customers, we want to give them as much good news as possible. We don't look for opportunities to charge our customers, we look for ways to make them happy. Remember, we are customers too.

This is exactly why RED will dominate the market. All of the other manufacturers do not get this. In another thread you mentioned that if you could start over you would talk less. But I personally hope the talking never stops. Imo, it's key in running a business that will do the things that you are attempting to do/are doing. Talking a lot vs keeping quiet both have pro's and con's obviously, but I would think that getting a lot of good AND bad feedback is better than banking on the fact that you know what we want.

Keep the good shit coming Jim.

Most's post is reasonable. We fight with this every day. We come up with advancements and realize that releasing them has to be done as a coordinated effort. Easier said than done. I think we are getting better at all this stuff. Just not perfect yet.

Doing just fine.

Was able to start with a tested end to end workflow for a TV series with B30 march 18th. AFAIK it was by then not out of beta. But it has worked rock solid.

Testing. Testing. Testing.
Verify.
Stick to the results.

Baffles me too. The camera shoots RAW. Post process should be targeting full use of the RAW "negative". Why cripple yourself with legacy HD REC709 gamut? REC709 is still available in post if you feel you need it. If you're requesting it just to keep directors and onlooking producers happy, then uh I guess that's another matter. I have my own way of dealing with those situations, which may or may not work for others... That's a different deal involving education of shooting RAW, etc..

I don't get it either - it's super easy to have a reasonable Look set-up to make suits happy - actually I amuse suits by showing how different thinsg can be with a few setting differences, it sometimes takes them a while to understand none of it is baked in - when they do they are often taken aback.

Soooo, let me get this straight:
Mike Most, who had his issues addressed by RED and Filmlight within 24 hours, decides to do the rest of the RedUser community a favor by suggesting RED manage the timeline for updating firmware, color science, SDK, etc a bit differently to reduce frustration for the mass of RedUsers. Then he gets sniped. Really?

I also find it puzzling that people think the RedTeam is not already doing everything they can to speed the integration of improvements into 3rd party products like FCP et al. Really?

It seems that Mike's core point is that RED would protect their reputation in the higher end and reduce frustration across the entire user base by withholding some advancements until 3rd parties can catch up. He also addresses another point that seemed to get lost, which is the need for long form projects to maintain consistency over longer periods of time which include firmware and even hardware changes (MX). Perhaps at the end of the day solving that issue is his problem, that's what he gets paid for, etc - I get that, and, I imagine, so does he. Ultimately RED's way of doing business will influence the penetration rate of the RedOne into the "biz" where, it is sad to report, image quality often loses out to budget/time considerations. Even vaunted Arri is putting a ProRes module on the Alexa knowing that many projects will finish directly from the codec rather than pursue the last measure of image quality available from an ArriRAW based finish. Just sayin'

I am not sure that withholding anything is in RED's DNA (see Jim's post about how he just can't stop posting and refers to it facetiously as a personality disorder) and Deanan makes a good point about how problematic it would be to wait on 3rd parties. In terms of issues like the green tint when viewing early MX footy in FCP (presumably with an older Red node) Jim's note (post #24 in this thread) about the metadata taking care of "matching" the interpretation to the footy might be helpful. If Jim, Deanan, Stuart or anyone in the loop has read this far, more details about that note would be welcome as I don't know any specifics.

FWIW if you have a Red Rocket and the latest version of RedCineX you should be able to do a virtual telecine and transcode to a robust format for online. Yes, it would be best to just create one light offline media and finish from the r3ds on your box of choice (Baselight, Scratch, Pablo, DaVinci, etc) but there may be short periods of time when that is not possible. Annoying, sure, but not a show stopper and only for a short time.

BTW Assimilate (Scratch) had an engineering build that was MX savvy in my hands the day I picked up my MXed RedOne (I had one of the very first on the street) that worked flawlessly.

Cheers - #19

Sage wisdom as usual Blair.

We need more Blairs in this community.

If this was answered earlier sorry, but I didn't see if this upgrade will help those of us that still are using the original sensor in our REDs. Or only the new MX sensor?
Thanks for moving forward RED...always...

Thanks for validating this concern. Although there may be no easy answer, it means a lot to hear this response.

Would it be possible/a good idea to give the color sciences and gamma/color spaces numbers just like software? Like color science 3.0 and Redgamma 3.0 or something? This would be useful in determining which one is the latest since I don't see the end of it coming yet and I am already confused between Redgamma, RedColor and Redspace.

Yes, the Rocket card has been working on Windows since the beginning, via Scratch. It has been working with REDCINE-X since Build 42 last October.

Russ, I'm pretty sure Jim said earlier in the thread (could have been in another one) that the benefit will only accrue to the R-1 or Epic MX sensor. However, M footage will benefit through software upgrades.

I see that this upgrade is for MX users... I only hope that simple MYSTERIUM users won't be forgotten in the futur ... :(

Meddy,

I am pretty sure that any improvement to RED color science and the RAW file system benefits every single frame ever captured. That is the whole idea.

I do not think that RED is leaving the M sensor behind and everyone is getting an opportunity to improve their camera or use an existing excellent M sensor in a RED one.
