  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I want my Rec 709!

Maybe my rec 709 was broken, because it looked horrible on my cam. I cant imagine anyone liking the images i get with 709 over redspace or redcolor.

Wasn't a big fan either. Never used it. Have used greyscale at times.

REC 709 was very usefull, as the old metering tools were calibrated for rec709 @ 320 asa/5000k.

Both the new RAW and redcolor are much better to judge from the monitor/video-tap and redspace was the source of much evil.

My personal wish has allways been to have a linear option, but I guess I am alone on thatone...

Personally I don't miss it, but unlike RedSpace it did no harm, so I cannot see why it couldn't come back.

The RAW has a REC 709 curve applied to the linear image, though - if you need to see the response.

Color Correction with REC709 monitor or ?

Color Correction with REC709 monitor or ?

Question, i've been using the following workflow now for months and seems to work, but the question is this:

If setting camera to REDCOLOR and REDGAMMA in RCX.....and then color correcting via HDSDI out from Rocket to color corrected REC 709 monitor.....is that going to have any effect on the final output image? what i mean is, if I'm monitoring in REC 709 on my cc monitor, yet setting REDCOLOR and REDGAMMA instead of REC709, am i benefitting or should i keep all my color and gamma spaces the same---REC709? I can also set my monitor to other settings, but I've always used REC709....seems to be the most pleasing image.

For me rec 709 has been invaluable over the past 18 months or so, but only as a gamma space. Pre MX i would always monitor exposure on set in rec 709 and dial a lot of saturation out of director/client monitors as it was always misleading and a tad hyper real to me. I always process rushes the same way, by setting the output colour space to camera rgb and the gamma to rec 709. I'm pleased that rec 709 etc has been added to red cine 326 but as mentioned above, having the in camera monitoring options again should correlate to those available in software processing. Ideally, a colour camera rgb and gamma rec 709 in camera setting would be good - clients don't get so upset about colours and i know that how i expose in camera will be exactly the same in processing. Also despite the fact that i always put processing instructions as a text document in the rushes folder of every job, i have been stung before by post companies taking it upon themselves to process a particular way that suits their workflow. Having these extra in camera options would also act as a insurance policy against those occasions where the footage is processed as "look source". As there are so many opinions on how to expose the r3d depending on who you talk to, being able to custom design look and gamma space settings in the camera would be great. Maybe a drop down options list could be good?

Best,

Lachlan

Didn't they take out rec 709 because they completely changed the color science for raw files? Eitherway Jim announced that they were coming out with more color and gamma profiles. I doubt you'll need or even want to go back to rec 709 after that. rec 709 was useful for the reasons people have previously posted, but to be honest, I don't miss it much.

Coming soon are three new settings you will want to know about.

REDcolor2- more natural color with a bit less saturation than REDcolor.
REDgamma2- more "filmic" looking instant grade. Highlights roll off more smoothly than REDgamma. This is now my default setting.
REDlogFilm- This the the REDlog replacement. It is the flattest image and holds the absolute maximum dynamic range seen by the sensor. It is a grader's dream. Info you thought wasn't there will magically appear.

Legacy settings, like REDspace, REDcolor and REDgamma, are still available. But you will want to look closely at the newer ones.

REDColor based colorimetry is totally and utterly REC709 compatible.
The old REC709 which was "to spec" showed about 5 stops DR, and hence made for a contrasty image with little highlight protection.
REDGamma is a REC709 compatible viewing gamma that has lots of DR, and slightly elevated black level. I find a lot of people on a grade just curve the blacks a tad and they're ready to go with a pleasing image of good contrast and range.
REC709 only ever was a monitor standard, not a camera signal record standard.

Except for one little detail. 709 fails to define the display gamma. Instead it defines the source/camera gamma. sRGB, on the other hand, defines both display and source gamma.
Poynton is trying to fix it. Here is the latest draft to replace 709. http://www.poynton.com/notes/PU-PR-IS/index.html

ah I see, Thanks for clearing that up Graeme!
