  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

M-X looks more "video-ish"?

Hey,

yesterday we had the subjective feeling while shooting with a M-X RED (build 30.4) that although the pan stutter has been vastly reduced the movement at 24fps looked more like 50i (therefore video) or if we would've put the shutter at 272 or 360

did anyone else have that issue or was it a pure subjective feeling? Maybe a wrong setting somewhere? We double and triple checked everything...

cheers

I was shooting on MX the other day as an AC, and I kept nodding to the DP saying doesn't the footage look weird? that was at 1/48, then at 1/60th it seemed to go back to normal... and looked like 24 1/48th

Open gate on the EVF?

Considering all of the pro shooters out there that have been using MX in productions for months and raving about it, my guess is this is a unique bug or a configuration/settings issue.

Will check the Open Gate on EVF thing, does this effect the LCD as well? Also will check with the footage after it has been downloaded.

thanks for the remarks.

Open Gate only effects EVF as far as I know - you'll see effectively 48p, hence it will look much smoother and that could make you feel video. If it's on the LCD it could be shutter speed. We can also see the r3d and look at the motion blur and see the metadata in redline to see what shutter was used.

A more pleasant viewing experience.

Open Gate eliminates a lot of EVF issues on my camera. Maybe mine is just a little older, but Open Gate cleans up some unpleasant strobing on the EVF's LCD, which definitely gives a headache. And I'm not talking about regular old 24/s shutter look, more like the feeling of a slow refresh time on a monitor. Hard to explain.

I am confused. I thought open gate was just matching the gate, or shutter, to the frame rate. So the shutter would be open for the total time allowable per the selected frames per second. So, for instance, if you are shooting 8 frames per second you will get a lot of motion blur. And in the case of 24FPS you would get slightly less effective shutter speed with open gate than with 1/48 or whatever the matching shutter angle degree is. If I am incorrect can someone please enlighten me?

Okay:

First, for that odd motion you saw: restore the camera to factory defaults. It will go away. Make sure you are on 30.5

Second, open gate is a evf, display only selection. It makes for smoother motion in the evf. If you want more motion blur do it with the shutter. Ie a 360* shutter.

+1.
The stutter in the EVF on pans is really horrible without "Open Gate" monitoring, shooting at 25fps with 180 shutter.
BTW I know "open gate" is meant to be incompatible with varispeed mode - so does the camera temporarily disable it?

I spoke to a chap who shoots on red a lot and he reckons he always ticks open gate and does varispeed so I asked him the same question and he just shrugged his shoulders, as if to say that it hadn't affected his shooting.

Why'd they call it "open gate" when that has a totally different meaning in film cameras?

open gate is THE BEST for your poor focus puller on a RPP lens WFO
