  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I wonder what the Texas AG would think about this?

I gave $5000 and didn't get married. Actually, I kept the $5000 and just didn't get married.

Use of REDREEL is a nono, but how exactly is this a scam?

A scam in that he is not showing his own work
to solicit funds.
If this guy had his own demo reel
or something to show instead of other people's work
then it would not be as scummy.

I love that he is using such outdated pictures of Scarlet and Epic when trying to buy the R1

Or for that matter RED?
He is using a REDREEL to scam money.

Michael.

My guess is that the AG wouldn't say anything. If this guy raises the money and purchases a Red, then he is just one of 7000+ other Red owners.

As far as the comments related to the reel -- He doesn't purport the footage to be his in that last paragraph.

You could argue that he could have linked back to a "Red portal" that has previously posted the footage to give more context to how the reel was put together and who was responsible for creating some amazing content.

This "fund raising" approach doesn't appear to be any different from a college kid trying to raise money to study abroad during the summer.

Interesting to better understand what set off so many "unhappy" responses to this post on the board.

Jonathan is right, he's got a long way to go.

To be fair, it isn't a scam (although he's damn close!). On his website it says:
"To view a video preview of some footage shot on the RED ONE cinema camera and to donate, please visit my fundraising page: (CLICK HERE)"

Again, I am not defending the guy - but let's analyze this statement here. He says it was "shot on the RED ONE cinema camera" but does not say he was the one who shot it. Misleading? Yes. Scam? No. Scam-ish? Yeah. I don't think his vagueness is going to help him much thou, no way he can raise 30,000$ on some vague ass "statements" about how awesome RED One is and that he wants to shot his next independent feature (and what was his previous feature...?).

Eric,

Alot more has been raised on a lot less substance...

Can you say Enron, Stanford, etc.

first $75 has to be friends and family....no one in their right mind would blindly give money to someone for their own personal gain.

Now....if he was promising to donate his time, which he presumably has plenty of, to shoot for philanthropic purposes, then that's a different story. But otherwise, it' a giant piggy bank with a website

KO

Not quite sure why people seem upset about this. If you don't like it, don't donate. There was a scifi short posted here a while back that asked for donations in order to finish the fx work that used the same donation program. I have had to raise funds in college in order to travel to Taiwan for a school conference. There are some very generous people out there willing to help. It is easy to tell someone to f off when you already have your camera.

I think it would have been better if he had tried to fundraise for his next film and rented a red rather than try to get the money to buy the camera outright. Should he have used the red demo reel? No, he should have posted his old projects. It is kind of like saying, I want to be a race car driver, help me buy a Porsche. Still, I do not think he is scamming but the bad thing is, these kind of donation programs mean he can not touch the money until he gets enough to foot the $17,000 base price, which will never happen most likely so the donations will be stuck in limbo.

Really? I thought the donations were returned if you failed to raised the necessary funds in time to meet the deadline?

Hey Mike, did you get the email from this guy, too? I just got it yesterday and was going to tell him to f@%# off.

Hello Justin, Yep I received an e-mail...

That's all guys like you need....a wanker begging for a RED....
I went to his website but did not see any of his work???

That is where the scam starts....
What if they guy is a crack head and just needs a few grand for a week??
Bottom line - don't donate and don't encourage this behavior.

Hmm. I wonder how much pity you guys would have if I were to start a page like this.

I'd have actual demos to show forth, and I would of course continue to be here on REDuser answering any of your questions.

Shall I give it a go? :w00t:

The site gets the money not him and it isnt forwarded to him unless he meets his target, if the target is is not met the money is refunded to the donators.
Please read up on crowdfunding before bashing it.
Please do encourage this behavior, some great movies being made at the moment through crowdfunding, check our kickstarter.com and see th quality of some of the stuff up there.
