  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Bug...What does that mean, now?

Does this mean Scarlet and Epic will be prolonged...basically?

Is Scarlet still going into production?

Just want the skinny?

Yep- if you read through that thread you will find that Jim talks about the company that was going to be helping pop out the Scarlets is no longer.
I think we can assume this means some kind of delay, but I think what Jim is saying is that it could be a short delay if they figure it out quickly or it could take some time, since they aren't sure how to fix it yet.
(The hardware bug or the manufacturing of Scarlet)

The skinny is...

The bug, whatever its doing, is in the firmware so that means that for some reason the cameras are not behaving in exactly the way they have been designed to behave.

This bug has baffled them and they have bumped the manpower to try to fix the issue.

The Scalets and EPICs will be released once they have figured out the bug fix. This is likely to not affect the camera units in the slightest, just the way it behaves!

I don't think we can assume this bug is in software/firmware, its cause seems unknown as of yet, it could, in a worst case scenario require hardware changes. Lets hope not.

I wouldn't call it an assumption when it's coming directly from Jim:

Reasonable question. While we have several hardware items that require modification, but the primary "bug" is a firmware issue. The capabilities of these cameras are absolutely incredible (many features we haven't yet announced)... so the complexity of the system is beyond complicated. Somewhere in the firmware we have a big problem. I'm confident that we will solve it and deliver more than anyone expects... but for now we have a gremlin.

If it is fox conn as suggested that's not true - foxconn employs about 800000 workers, something like 400000 at their main plant. Foxconn has committed to doubling wages ( still not much by most standards) - and talked about maybe relocating factories - but that would take quite some time. It is more likely that it is causing delays through contract renegotiations, ongoing investigation of conditions etc. But we just don't know as the posts are pretty vague.

Oh...okay...I thought Jim & Co is shutting down Scarlet...only Epic and R1.

Okay...I'm willing to wait a little longer like all of us here...I'll give Jim a few more months...but that's all...then I have no choice to go to Canon...Ouch!!!

Kidding; of course.

Fix that bug...

Thanks.

Foxconn is not going anywhere. They may be closing or relocating one of many factories, they may not be taking on any new products but I'd bet that's about the extent of Foxconn woes. No big deal.

Whatever the firmware bug is, I fully expect it to be solved in very short order. Seriously, like less than a week.

My interpretation is that they can't really start distributing all of the Tattoos for full on field testing until they overcome the bug. (They have working cameras and have used them in the field, but so far it has been under the watchful eye of Jarred Land on set). My guess is that once they squash the bug, they will be testing the cameras for 2-3 months before going into full production. If this bug is solved tomorrow, the production cameras will start sooner. If this bug takes say a couple months to solve, you can probably count on adding a couple more months for the proper Tattoo testing. crossing fingers Jim's dream team solves it quick. The wait is killing me hehe.

Anyone know much about what is invloved in changing OEM manufacturer,..... I imagine this is no easy or quick task.

I heard a reputable tech guy on DVXuser say 6-12 months is realistic. Any ideas if this is true?

If true... In the spirit of transparency, I think RED should issue a statement.

I would think maybe half that for a high profile customer and Jim Jannard/RED probably qualifies. Also depends on if components (circuit boards, castings, etc.) are already being made elsewhere and the contract manufacturer is more of a final assembler.

Seriously. In all seriousness. This bug will not take long to fix.

Although I could better assess if I knew what the nature of the bug is.

I'm still confused.... After all this time, we're still waiting patiently but I still would like to know:

Are we looking at 12 months' delay for the Scarlet or are we looking at a shorter delay.....?

Who can know? I look at it this way but this is a WAG, based only on what I know and a little logic...

RED has always said the Scarlet would be about (!!) 60 days behind Epic. Of course, Epic is now held up by a "bug" and, presumably, that bug somewhat effects Scarlet software/firmware, too. When they solve the Epic bug, I assume both projects will be back on track and in tandem on that front.

But, also, because of difficulties within their manufacturing partner for Scarlet, RED will need to find a new one. So, if they are able to put that in place within the same time window of squashing the "bug," they are, theoretically back on track with both programs. So the same clocks start clicking in tandem at that time with a 60 day gap for Scarlet.

However, if it takes longer to put a manufacturer in place than it does to kill the bug, you can add the additional time on to the gap between the two programs and Scarlet will be farther behind Epic by about that amount. Of course, in this latter case, optimists like me may hope that they can make up the time in some way and maintain or even reduce the 60 day gap and delight us all!!

Make sense? Like I said - wild ass guess! :001_huh:

Why can't they find a manufacturer here in the US? Is it the cost or time factor? I just thought you would be able to find a manufacturer pretty quick since Jim has 35 years of manufacturing experience behind him. But maybe its more complicated than it is? I can imagine it would be!!!

I think Jim said Epic will be manufactured in the US, but they can't provide Scarlet at their target prices if they were to manufacture them in the US, the cost of domestic manufacturing over certain overseas places is significant.

Due to the higher price point of Epic, manufacturing is a smaller percentage of the total cost, so therefore they can eat that expense to avoid manufacturing delays. These issues are separate from bug squashing.
