  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Titanium...

edit: What I'm trying to say is that there are three options... Aluminum, Stainless, or Titanium. Pick one.

I'd like all the modules to work together so I can turn my camera into an Autobot, to look like Spy Shot 6 (that's the camera Transformer... of course)

Cool idea...but what's the crop factor and subsequent FOV of, say, a 50mm lens on SpyShot 6? And will there be a BNCR mount available?

No, but Zacuto is coming out with a $64,995 rig that lets you put together nine of these , allowing you to shoot a 9D feature which you can view in all known parallel universes simultaneously. I have a discount code for the rig, it takes off $7500 from the retail price but it expires this midnight so hurry!

Mike, I think you're onto something here with this Transformer thing. Forget the modular camera design, let's go for an Origami-cam that can change into anything you like with a few twists & turns. Instead of titanium it should be made of Silly Putty.

Why this does not belong in this discussion: As soon as the titanium is exposed to an oxygen molecule, the oxide layer reforms. Since the majority of people using RED cameras are likely to be filming somewhere on this planet, the chances of exposing the camera to the air we breathe should be considered a given.

Why this is irrevelant in this discussion: If an EPIC camera were to be exposed to the temperature extremes noted, the titanum would likely survive better than most other parts of the camera. For example, vulnerability of the optics, circuit boards, wiring insulation, media, you name it. Should you really be concerned about what type of water you might use to clean the lens mount when the rest of the system has been exposed to these extremes?

As far as saying that titanium is "typically not found in its pure form in nature" - please consider that very few materials found in their pure form in nature are used without refining. Does aluminum or steel come direct from a quarry? Simple answer: No. There are many steps in the refining process with many opportunities for something to go wrong. Consider how many alloys are out there; each is picked for it's characteristics and its intended end use.

Are you sure that this is the reason Nikon used a surface treatment? Would not paint chip or wear down (how many camera bodies have I worn portions down to expose the brass beneath...)

In most cases, the material coating is cosmetic - in line with "corporate marketing standards" (very hard to read the Nikon name when it is only etched) It's called packaging. Oh, and an anti-reflective coating has benefits as well.

Please read the thread from the beginning - for some people - YES - There are cases where the thermal expansion of an aluminum lens mount may be an issue - while this may be only a small percentage of users, this OPTIONAL UPGRADE may be for them. Or perhaps the OPTIONAL steel PL mount would suffice.

This is the RED USER site - Think of the offering of a Titanium mount as a choice - just as someone may prefer a Master Prime to shoot a scene, someone else may prefer a Cooke. It is all about choice.

Unfortunately, when the offering of a choice or upgrade provides the fertilizer for delusional tangents that you have somehow latched onto, it ends up being a distraction to the community at large.

When a self-proclaimed "journalist" ignores repeated criticism about the content of their articles from numerous knowledgeable people, how can we expect them to know what the word "integrity" means to this community?

Thanks for completely missing the point of all my posts on this subject, Brian. And also a big huge thanks for attacking me personally. The underlying vitriol in your post directed toward me was a huge lesson in "Integrity" that I obviously needed.

On a positive note, I especially liked your long-winded rationale (posted in the thread) of how irrelevant my points were to the thread. I'll remember these when I go to my "Journalist" job monday morning.

And thank you for being the internet's "integrity police". Its a dirty job, but someone's got to do it.

Aluminum has screwed many of us. So why an Aluminum PL mount at all? Aluminum is fine for Scarlet cameras or for Canon or Nikon mounts.
