  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet update in mid-May

There is NO WAY I'd take a bet like that, if I were you. We have NO CLUE how close RED is, and really how much actually needs to be finished. So for you to put money on it, seems reckless to me. But hey, what do I know, you could be a deginerate gambler, who enjoys taking risky bets.

I think you mean "degenerate" :nonod: and no, I am not much of a gambler at all. In fact, I spent 3 days in Las Vegas at NAB and RED Day and never once gambled, unless you consider the lottery tickets at the RED event. Interestingly enough, with $20 worth of tickets I won a $479 hard drive kit in the RED lottery!!

I am basing my evaluation on the follow scenario:

1) There are already several prototype Epics shooting footage as we speak.
2) It is my opinion that, unless Jim is flat on his back while recovering his health, he is probably spending several hours every day with his own Epic testing it like no one else can
3) I think we are close to the beginning of the Tattoo program and will see it kick off between June 1 and June 15
4) I think Tattoo will last 30-45 days and that they will be doing fixes on a daily basis whenever they find things that need fixing.
5) Once Tattoo is complete, it will take another 15 days or so to "button up" the issues that remain
6) Then, Stage 2 will start and Epics will begin shipping - some time in August
7) At that point, very little will remain to be "debugged" on Scarlet. As Jarred said in his recent "answers..." post, "The ASIC, Sensor and Lens work have been complete ( the hard parts ), but there is still alot of firmware work to be done and some minor mechanical changes waiting on tooling." That means that right now, an awful lot is already complete and finalized. They will be working on the firmware throughout the Tattoo phase and will have very, very little left when Tattoo is complete.
8) Based on the indication that RED has always put Scarlet about 60 days behind Epic, I see Scarlet being released in the October time frame. Optimistic, maybe, but that gives me a couple months leeway as far as putting my money where my mouth is.

Elsewhere on this forum, several weeks ago, I jokingly made a prediction that Scarlet release would be announced on September 20 at 9:52 PM. I'll stick behind that - but don't ask me to bet on it!

Could I be wrong? Absolutely. I just see the odds very heavily in my favor. I'd be the first to admit that the betting thing is a little macho/juvenile but I guess I set myself up for "putting up or shutting up." I really don't like being wrong so I try not to be, as often as possible. :embarassed: In this case I am sure most of us hope I am not. I am counting on the positive vibes of the group!!!

GO RED!!!

Check your private messages Terry. Confirm the bet and let the games begin!

Best of luck to you and the rest of us. The way I look at it is, my Scarlet will cost me $100 more than everyone else and you'll get $100 discount on yours. Fair enough. Would be a nice Christmas present for sure, but I'm already making plans for what I'll be doing with my $100 that I win.

Nothing wrong with waiting for something thats good , I am still burning the heads off my sd gear . While I wait the workflow issues are being worked out , features are being added , win win situation.

My approach too. Practicing shooting full manual mode with my GL2 and a light meter for maximum DR.
GL2 useful ISO range is about 50-200. DR is about 7 stops.

Scarlet should be a bit better.:sifone:

I wonder which one of us Jarred would be willing to back. That would tell us a lot, wouldn't it?? :wink5:

From a purely selfish point of view I want Terry to win, BAD, having a Scarlet by the end of the year is what I'm after. I am changing over from Panasonic and having a complete working Scarlet with accessories ready to start shooting out of the bag is what I need. It will make the change over a lot smoother. I want to start making movies straight away.

Terry's going to win.

Scarlet for Christmas. Terry will win the bet by a whisker. Or is that a whisky given that it'll be Christmas.

Either way, I win.

Scarlets are here finally = I win because I get a sweet camera!
Scarlets are not here = $100

Both of these are wins in my eyes.

It's like betting against your football team in the playoffs - if you win you are happy and if you lose still get some money.

I'm pretty sure that Scarlet orders will start being taken the week after I break down and buy some other camera.

These were my first three reasons for betting on a Scarlet delivery before year end. Looks like nos. 1 & 3 are spot on.

And I am still betting that Jim is shooting the hell out of his own Epic for relaxation.

Now this post from Jarred!

Correct... The Tattoo Program has already begun, Snake Oil, Lucky, Jackpot, Crackpot and Ghost are all Tattoo cameras that have been built in the last couple weeks. Several more are being assembled, and once Firmware V1.0 is ready, those new Tattoos will be delivered to the selected few that are in the Tattoo program.

My next assumption was that Tattoo would last 30-45 days. We'll see, eh?

This is getting exciting. :hurray:

I would like to apply or ask to be a beta tester for the least expensive Scarlet. I got A's in Cinematography I and II from Dr. Raymond Fielding... wayyy back when I was in school. I have shot film, and lots and lots of video. I have been using Avid since November 2001 and it changed everything and changed it for the better. I have a feature script titled, "The 13'th Amendment". Its a black comedy about the reinstitution of Slavery. I saw the first Scarlet prototype at NAB 2008 and Jim Jennard was there. I saw the demo in the 4k theater. The Che film and the rest of it. I can't afford a Red 1 but I can make myself afford a Scarlet. I am excited about Avid Media Composer 5 being able to edit the files natively. ( or whatever the workflow is I"m sure Avid will handle nicely) I made on film about my friend Raymond Wayne Hill. I got a nice rejection letter from the British Film Institute Film Festival. They said they loved it but couldn't schedule it ( as it was 5 hours long) I really want to understand the pipeline all the way to what Digital Cinema Intermediates? Is there any kind of "standard" for that? I know we are in the era of a million standards.

but I want to be a beta tester ( representing the demographic of Red Noob but with cinematography training)

Pick me Pick me!!!!!

My bet is that Jim is doing alot of shooting around his house during his time off.
