  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

No more FF35 Scarlet?

Oh, I didn't notice that.
Really strange.
Most cmos cameras do have several outputs from column buses, which enables ROI.
Eg. cheap Casio EX-FH25 has one row cut to pieces of 224 pixels, so different frame rates have horizontal resolution multiplied by this (224px/1000fps, 448px/240fps, 640px/120fps).
Maybe this explanes why Red's sensors are so affordable...
Btw, is there somewhere in these forums Epic's formats posted (resolutions, fps)?

When canon put 5d2 out there wasn't even term DSMC yet.
Maybe they didn't know what customers would want.
Or maybe they just thought that FF size is the thing people wants and don't mind line skipping artifacts.
And maybe they didn't think that movie mode was used professionally at all. Same thing when Sony put first dv(cam) in 1995-96. It wasn't meant for broadcasting, but it is still used for that.
I don't know if 5d2's sensor could handle windowing and how well, but seems to be quite natural that when next model is out, that would be the most important new feature of the camera. Or maybe second to raw recording.

I would not expect Canon to do full frame raw recording at motion rates on these still cams. It would price them out of their market range.

I don't either. Only line skipping and possibly windowing.
Over 10Mpx FF is job for Epic.

Pretty amazing:

So this is "almost S35" at consumer level.
Seems to be modern way to pay off r&d to bring new tech first to consumer products and work them up from there.
Again this is all about lenses, Sony can use their aps-c lineup in multiple ways...
All of a sudden it seems very logical for sony to buy dslr-line from minolta...

In that case, make the horizontal pixel count way big and then we can lay a couple of brains sideways to make 2x the resolution with a lot larger field of view.

Key word *Burst* :D

Eventually you have to process that data.

Canon video has been brought up numerous times in this thread... keep in mind that the entire DSLR Video craze came from more of an "afterthought" - someone at Nikon realized they were sending a fairly high-def stream to the LCD when LiveView was added to the D90, and someone said "why not make it recordable"?

Everything I've seen so far (and I own a D90 and now a 2Ti with Nikon adapter) is that Canon is simply trying to make the best of that workaround (Nikon seems completely unconcerned with the video market). Heck, it took Magic Lantern to give users audio metering and no AGC. As long as these things are being sold as - primarily - still cameras, I doubt we'll see everything we want in 'em. (Though I just saw an interview with 24's b-camera crew stating that they are working directly with Canon Japan and that the next 12 months will see some "amazing" developments; they also state they've gotten around the compression to a great extent and are shooting "almost raw").

I love the video I'm getting from the cheapest Canon, and will upgrade to the full sensor (especially now that Scarlet's delayed again). What I won't get is high-speed burst frames, raw footage, a true viewfinder (vs. something tacked on), professional audio, etc. If the fixed lens Scarlet ever appears, it'll still be a game changer. DSLRs are still an interim solution to an expensive problem.

I'm hoping RED's entry into the Anamorphic space changes their mind on desqueeze being Epic-Only.

Sorry, but I don't have the luxury of looking through 1000's of posts each week. So only the EPIC is currently slated to handle anamorphic workflows (i.e., de-squeezing the image for framing/focus)?
