  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

10 Scarlet Questions from Joseph Hutson

Just a feature request. Could you make a nice AF confirm beep for Scarlet. Something melodious rather than the beep you get on a Canon 1D.

Maybe beep in the headphone out. But David is right, even if you're not recording sound at the camera it should still be as silent as possible since someone is probably recording sound somewhere.

Also, remember actors are VERY sensitive to things like beeping while they are trying to deliver a performance. Do you remember what happened when a grip crossed Christian Bale's eyeline one too many times during a take?

accurate release date soon

accurate release date soon

We still do not have enough of an accurate timeline to give you the SCARLET Mid-May " When is it going to be done " update that you are all waiting for... so as a bit of an interlude:[/I]

I have been through this whole thread and don't think I saw anyone latch onto this like I did, which is that not only was this interlude full of great INFORMATION!, which we all really wanted, but that when the delayed mid month announcement gets here, it will have an accurate timeline for Scarlet!

Am I right!?

Jeff

If the Scarlet Fixed is thinner than the Epic, with the modules just stick out on the sides when attached to the Fixed? Does it have a different width redmote?

We use IS lenses (Canon) and like the IS VERY much for hand held video work.

there is an adapter plate that goes from the width of the back of Scarlet 8x to the width of the modules. All modules and REDMOTES are the same size for both brains.

So, is #21 an announcement that the interchangeable Scarlet will support the micro 4/3rds mount (or other similar system) so that we can use our BNCR, OCT18, OCT19, Canon FD, etc... mounted-lenses?

If not, what are your plans for allowing 3rd parties to develop lens mounts?

Thanks

The micro 4/3 format is definitely gaining in popularity and I think there could be a market for a 4/3 mount. It's somewhat of an oddball format though and falls almost right in between the 2/3" and S35 sensor sizes. Most m-4/3 cameras have a sensor that's about 18mm wide. By comparison, the 2/3" Scarlet sensor has a recordable area that's around 10mm wide and S35 M-X at 5K is over 27mm wide.

...It kinda makes one wonder if there's enough glass out there and enough demand, if there could be a market for a micro 4/3 Scarlet brain.

Thanks for the answer.

Also, how does the REDMOTE and REDMOTE pro receive power when off the brain? I am assuming a battery inside, will it be charged by the brain? What kind of time will it run detached.

Thanks!

Jeff: I am not talking about the sensor size, just the mount. The physical connection between the lens and the camera body. There are already 3rd party micro 4/3rds adapters for all cinema lens mounts (PL, BNCR, OCT18, OCT19, Arri standard, Arri bayonet, Eclair), as well as all still 35mm mounts (Minolta, Olympus, Canon FD, M42, etc...). People are using them with the Panasonic Lumix GH1 cam with great results.

I plan on getting a S35 Scarlet (or the Monstro Scarlet) and using it with my existing glass, none of which is PL, Nikon, or Canon EF mount. Jannard stated previously that they would support 3rd party mounts, but has yet to provide any details.

I'd love to see a 4/3 mount or a 4/3 Scarlet... I'd have to guess that there's enough glass out there to justify a mount, but not a full on Scarlet.

I love the 12-60 mm (24-120 FF equivalent) and 50-200 mm (100 to 400 mm FF equivalent) SWD lenses I'm using on my Olympus E3. I'm a novice with regards to video, though, so I have no idea if they'd be decent cinematic lenses. The focus is super fast, but noisy when it gets into focus, kinda clunking a little. And, while I love the Olympus system, the dang autofocus on the E3 is not so great in low light. I don't know if that's the lenses or the camera. If someone were to come out with a mount, would these lenses autofocus? If so, would Red have to come up with the autofocus algorithms? And, if so, could they improve on them so the focus wasn't so fast reducing the "clunk" factor? If not, I'm guessing the SWD lenses wouldn't be ideal for a video situation. But, like I said, I'm a total novice to video equipment.

There's got to be a Scarlet from the Monstro generation. It doesn't have to be called the Scarlet, but you get the idea... S16 sounds like a good sensor size to me, personally. 2/3" > S16 seems like a logical upgrade in sync with S35 > FF35. Of course, we can expect Monstro to take things like sensitivity and DR to new and exciting places. I wonder if a 4K Scarlet would be possible.

1" or 4/3" is interesting too.

....
These algorithms are pretty hardcore.. The same algorithms used on the EPIC to control autofocus on the RED FF35 lenses ( and canon and nikon electronic lenses ) have trickled down to Scarlet.

And yes the motors are in the lens, both autofocus, iris and zoom. That 8x lens all by itself is a technical achievement all by itself. And remember this is a cinema lens.. with custom actuators and lens group movements designed for both motion and still.

Jarred..if you're out there...sounds like maybe RED FF35 zoom lenses will be ready to go before the FF35 sensors are...

Also any eventual plans for RED FF35 fully manual prime lenses...thanks..

micro 4/3 should be the super 16 of digital cinema. Fits in image size neatly 1/2 way between 2/3" and S35 5k. Imagine a camera lineup with 3k 2/3", 4k 4/3, 5k S35 and 6k FF35!

My favourite sensor size and would buy it before anything else!

I've often wondered about having that 150mm f/2 rehoused for the 2/3" Red Mini mount. That was one of the nicest lenses I've ever owned. On a 2/3" Scarlet it would be like a 535mm f/2 on a 135 frame. And I'm pretty sure it resolves well enough to do the job pretty well, despite the higher "crop factor."

Well there is/was a plan for all of those scarlets (exept 4/3) when the dmca info first hit the wave. The 6k FF35 scarlet was even meant to be a Monstro chip.

If those plans have been changed or not I dont know.

Yes, the 6K FF Sensor Scarlet is indeed a next generation camera featuring the MONSTRO sensor. Jim said he's not sure if it will be called the Scarlet, but the camera that is labeled "FF35 Scarlet" is under development.
